El-Sisi welcomes Macron's pledge to recognise Palestinian state - Foreign Affairs

Al-Ahram Weekly26-07-2025
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron's announcement that France will formally recognise the state of Palestine, during a phone call between the two leaders on Saturday.
Macron said on Thursday that France would move to recognise Palestinian statehood at a United Nations meeting in September.
El-Sisi said the move goes in line with French efforts to advance a two-state solution, which he described as the only viable path to fulfilling the aspirations of both Palestinians and Israelis for peaceful coexistence.
He stressed that such a resolution was essential for lasting regional stability, according to a statement released by the Egyptian presidency.
Meanwhile, both leaders agreed on the urgent need for a just and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian issue, per international legitimacy resolutions, the statement added.
The call also covered Egypt's ongoing mediation efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitate the exchange of hostages and detainees, with Macron reiterating his country's support for the Egyptian strives in this respect.
Furthermore, Presidents El-Sisi and Macron underscored the importance of delivering sufficient humanitarian aid to Gaza's population.
El-Sisi also expressed Egypt's support for a joint French-Saudi initiative to hold a high-level international conference on resolving the Palestinian issue.
The conference is expected to take place in New York this July.
Strengthening Egypt-France Relations
The two leaders also discussed strengthening bilateral ties, building on the momentum of Macron's recent visit to Cairo in April.
During his three-day trip, the French president visited Cairo's historic Khan el-Khalili market and the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza.
He also attended a trilateral summit with President El-Sisi and Jordan's King Abdullah II to discuss the war in Gaza.
Both sides reiterated their commitment to enhancing cooperation in the economic, trade, and investment sectors.

Al-Sisi ratifies amendments to Old Rent Law

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has ratified Law No. 165/2025, amending certain provisions of Law No. 4/1996 regarding the application of the Civil Code to properties that have never been rented before, or whose lease contracts have ended—or will end—without granting any party the right to remain in them. The law will come into force the day after its publication in the Official Gazette. A newly added Article (2 bis) stipulates that the tenant—or their general or specific successor—must vacate the rented property and return it to the owner or lessor at the end of the lease term specified in the contract. Should the tenant refuse, the owner or lessor may request the summary judge of the competent court to issue an eviction order, without prejudice to the right to claim compensation if applicable. The Egyptian House of Representatives gave final approval to the government-proposed amendments in early July, aiming to resolve longstanding legal and economic challenges associated with old rent agreements. Under the new law, a transitional period has been set before the termination of these contracts: seven years for residential units and five years for non-residential units rented by natural persons. This is intended as a step towards liberalising rental relations between landlords and tenants. At the end of the transitional period, tenants will be required to vacate the units and return them to the owners. The law also confirms that all previous legislation regulating old rent agreements will be repealed after this period. New rental contracts thereafter will fall under the provisions of the Civil Code, ensuring freedom of contract between landlords and tenants. The Old Rent Law has been the subject of widespread debate in recent years. Supporters—mainly property owners—argue it has caused decades of injustice and financial loss due to outdated, fixed rental values. Meanwhile, opponents—primarily long-term tenants—express concern over eviction and the challenge of meeting significantly higher rental prices under new agreements.

Egypt's Foreign Minister discusses Nile water security with Ugandan president

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Entebbe on Monday to discuss Egypt's 'existential' concerns over its water security and ways to boost bilateral ties, the Egyptian foreign ministry said. Egypt's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, also attended the high-level meeting during the official visit to Uganda. In a statement, the ministry said Abdelatty conveyed Egypt's concerns regarding the Nile River and stressed the need to adhere to international law for shared water resources. He voiced Egypt's rejection of 'unilateral actions' in the eastern Nile Basin and affirmed that Cairo 'will take all necessary measures under international law to protect its water security.' 'The waters of the Nile are an existential issue for Egypt,' Abdelatty told the Ugandan president. The minister of water resources and irrigation reiterated that respect for international law on the Nile River is the basis for positive cooperation to achieve the common interest of all basin countries. During the meeting, Abdelatty, who conveyed greetings from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, also called for the formation of a joint Egyptian-Ugandan business council to boost investment in sectors like construction, energy, and pharmaceuticals. He highlighted the potential for joint projects through a financing mechanism recently established by Egypt to support development in southern Nile Basin countries. The officials also discussed regional security developments, including the situation in the Horn of Africa and counter-terrorism efforts. For his part, President Museveni asked for his greetings to be passed to President Sisi and stressed his country's keenness to enhance bilateral cooperation, the statement said. Separately, Abdelatty and Sewilam also met with Ugandan Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Henry Oryem Okello, in Kampala. In that meeting, they discussed similar issues of economic cooperation and regional security, and Abdelatty delivered a grant of agricultural equipment and light transport vehicles to a Ugandan non-governmental organisation that supports youth and small-scale farmers.

UAE Launches Global Youth Dialogue to Shape the Future of Sustainable Development Beyond 2030 - Middle East Business News and Information

HE Abdullah Nasser Lootah: The UAE views youth not just as beneficiaries of development, but as essential partners in shaping and leading efforts towards a sustainable future. The nation is committed to building a more inclusive and sustainable world by 2045, guided by proactive, forward-thinking strategies. Voices for 2045: Youth Shaping the Future session aimed to: Engage young participants of the 2025 High-Level Political Forum in envisioning the world beyond 2030; Gather youth aspirations and ideas for the 2045 XDGs Vision, a new global approach to comprehensive and sustainable development; Encourage youth change-makers to reflect, connect, and draw inspiration from innovative ideas for a more sustainable and inclusive future. New York, USA, August, 2025 — As part of the UAE delegation's participation in the United Nations Sustainable Development Forum 2025, organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the General Secretariat of the National Committee for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) hosted a dedicated youth session titled Voices for 2045: Youth Shaping the Future. Held at the Permanent Mission of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, the session brought together youth leaders and global change-makers, including members of the UN General Assembly's Major Group for Children and Youth. The session engaged young participants in envisioning the world beyond 2030 and empowered them to shape the future of sustainable development. It fostered dialogue on youth aspirations and ideas for the Extended Sustainable Development Goals (XDGs 2045), a global vision for inclusive growth introduced by the Secretariate of the National Committee on SDGs at the 2023 World Governments Summit. The platform enabled youth change-makers to share experiences, connect with peers, and exchange ideas for a more inclusive and resilient future. Youth Empowerment: His Excellency Abdullah Nasser Lootah, Assistant Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Experience Exchange and Chair of the National Committee for Sustainable Development Goals, stated: 'The UAE firmly believes that youth are not merely beneficiaries of development pathways but essential partners in shaping and leading them towards the future He emphasized that the session reflects this philosophy by giving youth a transparent and effective platform to express their visions and challenges. HE Lootah added, 'Shaping the vision of the post-2030 sustainable development agenda requires open dialogue, collective participation, and bold ideas that keep pace with global changes. It is not enough to listen to youth as inspirational voices; their visions must be treated as essential inputs in policy-making and prioritization.' Three Main Themes: 40 participants from the UN Major Group for Children and Youth contributed diverse perspectives on the ambitious XDGs 2045 vision. Discussions focused on three core themes – empathy, passion, and action – underscoring the role of youth in building a better future. Participants responded to three key questions via an online survey, offering insights on their motivations, desired transformative changes, challenges faced, and proposed solutions to enhance youth contributions to sustainable development. Their responses underscored key priorities including empowering youth and ensuring their active involvement in policy and strategy development; strengthening international cooperation and promoting innovation; guaranteeing universal access to quality education and healthcare; and safeguarding the environment and natural resources for future generations. The session Voices for 2045: Youth Shaping the Future reflects the UAE's commitment to supporting global efforts to achieve the SDGs and to enhancing the role of youth as key partners in the development of a more inclusive and sustainable world by 2045. The United Nations High-Level Political Forum: The United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is the UN's main platform for sustainable development matters. Since its establishment in 2012, it has played a central role in tracking and reviewing countries' progress toward implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Delegations participating in the Forum conduct assessments of achievements made so far toward the SDGs, with in-depth reviews of five key goals: SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages; SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls; SDG 8: Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all; SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources; and SDG 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
