Ms. Newby was established in 1974 on the corner of Joan Avenue and Thomas Drive by Melva Newby. What started as a small inside bar with around 10 seats turned into an expansion of 4 locations around Panama City Beach and Bay County.
Officials say the reason the business is running so well is because the community knows where the owner's hearts lie.
'I think people have just gravitated to it because everyone in town knew Melva. Everyone in town knows Charlotte. And they're starting to get to know Will West and I and they know where our hearts are. Our hearts lie in the community. And we believe Bay County, you know, we want everything around us on Thomas Drive to prosper Because whatever is good around us even makes us even better,' Operations Director Lindsey Pickenpaugh said.
Something that has always remained on the top of Newby's bargoers' desires is their famous hunch punch.
For 50 years people have been dying to know the secret ingredient in Newby's classic hunch punch.
Officials say while they can't spill the beans on the punch's secret formula they did reveal one thing. It's definitely surrounded by alcohol.
'Everclear, a rum, and a vodka and so that's what we're able to tell you. Now, the red mix can never tell you. You can keep guessing, but no one has guessed yet,' Pickenpaugh said.

Ms. Newby's celebrates 50 years of service
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Ms. Newby's was established in 1975 on the corner of Joan Avenue and Thomas Drive by Melva Newby. Melva named the business after herself, as one of the first women to open a bar in the area. 'My grandmother she did many things in our early life, and she always wanted to open the bar. And back in the seventies, it was very rare for a woman to be in the bar business. So she was one of the first in Panama City Beach,' Ms. Newby's Owner Will Pickenpaugh said. 'That was my grandfather's. That was David Newby, killer, and it was a strip club, and we decided to turn it into a more, you know, sophisticated kind of bar,' Newby's Too Owner Wesley Pickenpaugh said. The business has stayed in the family, it was passed down to Charlotte Newby. When she retired, the business went to her children, Will and Wesley Pickenpaugh. 'It's really like a family here. You know, so makes it that much more enjoyable to come to work every day,' Pickenpaugh said. They went on to open two other locations, called Newby's Brew and Booze and, Newby's Brew On The Bay. Each location offers a place where you can meet people from all walks of life. 'You'll meet a barber, then you'll meet like a plumber, and you'll meet everyone from all types of work. And they come in to drink, and it's just it's like a surreal moment,' Ms. Newbys's Bartender Sarah Rodriguez said. Las Vegas under partial hiring freeze as city readies for Badlands deal
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Las Vegas expects a settlement soon in litigation over the Badlands golf course, and has already begun to freeze hiring to save money, according to city officials. Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley spoke to 8 News Now about 'belt-tightening' in the city, and a presentation on Thursday at the Nevada Legislature revealed more about steps city government is taking. Las Vegas will buy Badlands golf course, sell to developer Lennar as settlement nears Deputy City Manager Sabra Newby answered questions from the Assembly Committee on Government Affairs, telling lawmakers that the city needs to save about $250 million to put toward a final settlement. Some of that will come from leaving positions open as people leave, and the city has offered a voluntary separation program that could cut jobs across the board. 'As you might imagine, $250 million is a lot of money in any situation. And because of that we are looking at and have already begun to hold positions frozen to save money as people leave to recoup some of those funds that we will need to pay out, essentially,' Newby said. 'As folks leave, we identify whether or not those positions should be filled.' Las Vegas is not cutting jobs in public safety, including paying its share for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, firefighters, corrections officers, dispatch centers and courts. 'But all other positions are certainly scrutinized very heavily and most likely going to be frozen,' Newby told lawmakers. Jobs left vacant by voluntary separations will be frozen for two years as a cost-cutting measure, she said. First-term Assemblymember Tanya Flanagan asked about potential cuts that could affect parks and recreation. Newby said the city is committed to avoiding layoffs. But to the extent there are frozen positions, there could be an impact, she said. There are no plans to cut programming. Newby said 'a number of our capital projects' were wiped out, some related to parks. Berkley was at the Legislature on Thursday, introducing her staff for the presentation. She didn't talk in detail about the financial impact of the settlement, but in a conversation with Politics Now host John Langeler in late January, she talked about steps being taken. 'There'll be some belt-tightening, there's no doubt about that. But we will be whole, and given the fact that the economy in all of Southern Nevada but in the City of Las Vegas is as strong as it is, and I have no reason to think that it won't be continuing into the future,' Berkley said. 'It won't be very long until we can absorb this and move forward and continue blossoming,' she said. Berkley was conscious of the case's pressure on the budget as she took office. 'I didn't buy new furniture when I moved into the mayor's office. Little things like that. I said how can we be talking about — not a hiring freeze, but being judicious in our hiring — how can I turn around and, I think there was a $10,000 budget for the mayor's furniture.' Goodman left the office in 'pristine' condition, she said. 'That's a belt-tightening, we're not doing anything like that. No frivolous spending.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
