Canva rolls out new AI video clip feature powered by Google's Veo 3 model

Canva is bringing Google's latest and most advanced AI video generation model to its platform.
The design software company announced on Thursday, June 19, that users will be able to tap into Veo 3 through a newly launched Canva AI feature called 'Create a Video Clip' in order to generate an eight second-long video clip with sound.
With this feature powered by Veo 3, users will be able to easily turn their pitch deck opener or social media post into an AI-generated video teaser. The Create a Video Clip feature is accessible from the Canva homepage. It is available to Canva Pro, Teams, and Enterprise subscribers as well as Canva Nonprofit users.
However, users will be restricted to five AI-generated videos every month for the time being.
'We're one of the first platforms to integrate Google's Veo 3 video generation model, just weeks after its debut. Create a Video Clip makes this advanced technology accessible to millions on Canva, empowering anyone to produce dynamic, polished videos with high-quality visuals, realistic motion, and synchronized audio,' Danny Wu, the head of AI products at Canva, said in a blog post.
The 'Create a Video Clip' feature is also available for paid users of Leonardo AI, the generative AI content and research platform acquired by Canva last year.
Follow these steps to create an AI-generated video using the Create a Video Clip feature that is powered by Google's Veo 3 model:
– Go to Canva AI from the homepage or sidebar
– Select Create a Video Clip
– Enter a prompt based on the video you want to generate
– The video will open in Video Editor where you can fine-tune it using Canva tools such as Brand Kit to add text, music, etc.
'From there, it can also be copied into other design formats – whether it's a social post presentation, or campaign asset,' Canva said.
In order to prevent the generation of harmful content, Canva said that its new feature is protected by Canva Shield, which is designed to moderate the inputs and outputs from these tools.
Canva on Wednesday also revealed plans to acquire an AI-powered creative intelligence platform called MagicBrief as the company looks to broaden the scope of its AI tech stack.
Earlier this year, Canva introduced its all-new Visual Suite 2.0, which includes an AI coding tool, a voice-enabled AI feature, and an AI-powered spreadsheet generator. Magic Studio and Canva AI have been used over 18 billion times so far, the company revealed.

Global data breach reportedly hits 16 billion accounts; Google, Apple, VPNs could be affected

In what is being described as one of the most extensive data breaches ever uncovered, security researchers have identified a colossal collection of exposed data comprising more than 16 billion individual records. According to a recent investigation byCybernews, the leaked information was spread across 30 distinct databases, each believed to have been compiled using various infostealer malware strains. These malicious tools, often employed by cybercriminals and sometimes by ethical hackers for research purposes, are capable of siphoning sensitive user data from infected devices. The scale of the leak is staggering. While some datasets were relatively smaller, containing only a few million records, others held billions of entries. The compromised data includes credentials linked to major platforms such as Google, Apple, GitHub, Telegram, and popular VPN services. Worryingly, out of all 30 datasets, only one — containing 184 million records — had previously come to light in the media. Yet this database, sizeable in its own right, 'barely scratches the top 20' of what the researchers ultimately uncovered, theCybernews team said. The researchers emphasised that such massive data leaks are becoming alarmingly routine. 'New giant datasets emerge every few weeks,' they warned, underscoring the growing threat posed by infostealer malware and poorly secured data infrastructure. While the exposed databases were only publicly accessible for a brief period before being locked down, the identities of those responsible for uploading or managing the data remain unknown. It also remains difficult to ascertain precisely how many individuals have been impacted, as many records likely overlap or contain duplicate entries. Given that an estimated 5.5 billion people worldwide now have internet access, the figures suggest that a significant portion of the global online population could have had multiple accounts compromised. Security experts continue to urge businesses and institutions to adopt stronger cybersecurity measures and conduct regular audits of their digital assets to prevent future exposures of this scale.

Is anything real anymore? AI testimonials take over the American justice system

Generative AI has been developing at a breakneck pace since the high-profile release of ChatGPT in November 2022. The Large Language Model (LLM) garnered massive media recognition for its ability to write complex and coherent responses to simple prompts. Other AI LLMs such as and Microsoft's 'Sydney' (now the AI copilot) also gained media notoriety for the manner in which they seemed to mimic human emotions to an uncanny degree. Written text is not the only area where AI has a disruptive effect, with image generation algorithms such as Midjourney, and video generation programs such as Google Veo progressively blurring the line between what's made by humans, and what's made by AI. Google Veo, in particular, became infamous for generating short videos resembling viral social media posts that had netizens wondering how convincing they looked. These rapid developments in AI technology have led to increased concerns about their disruptive impact on everyday life, and this has now begun to happen in the courtrooms of the United States. AI testimonies are now a part of the US court system AI video is now being introduced as a kind of posthumous testimony in court trials. During a manslaughter sentencing hearing where the victim was an American male named Christopher Pelkey, shot and killed in a road rage incident, an AI video of Perkley played where he gave an impact statement. The video had the AI say 'To Gabriel Horcasidas, the man who shot me, it is a shame we encountered each other that day, under those circumstances…I believe in forgiveness, and a God who forgives and I always have. I still do.' Pelkey's sister, Stacy Wales, had given her own testimony during the sentencing hearing, but didn't feel that her own words alone could properly convey the extent of her grief. Christopher Pelkey was killed in a road rage incident in Chandler in 2021, but last month, artificial intelligence brought him back to life during his killer's sentencing hearing. At the end of the hearing, Gabriel Horcasidas was sentenced to 10.5 years in prison. The ruling has since been appealed, shining a spotlight on the disruptive impact AI tech is already having on America's court system. Speaking to the Associated Press, AI deepfake expert David Evan Harris said that the technology might end up stacking the deck in favour of the wealthy and privileged: 'I imagine that will be a contested form of evidence, in part because it could be something that advantages parties that have more resources over parties that don't,' In one of the viral Google Veo videos that took the internet by storm, an AI generated girl says: 'This is wild. I'm AI generated by Veo 3. Nothing is real anymore.' We are Veo 3 just broke the internet.10 wild examples 1. Nothing is real anymore With the increasing normalization of AI technology in everyday life, as well as vital civic avenues such as criminal justice, the impacts of such technologies are sure to be dissected and studied for years to come.
