Temba Bavuma gets his own rendition of ‘Bella Ciao'; South African dressing room after winning WTC a sight to behold
South Africa batting coach Ashwell Prince was on cloud nine after the Proteas won the World Test Championship final against Australia. The 48-year-old celebrated the win in the Proteas dressing room and dedicated a special song to South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma. It was a historic day in South African cricket history as they won an ICC title after 27 years.
Prince had skipper Bavuma by his side when Mpumelelo Mbangwa entered the dressing room for an interview post the historic win. When Mbangwa held the mic up to Prince, he broke into a song dedicated to Bavuma — set to the tune of the Italian folk classic 'Bella Ciao'—a song that became widely popular after featuring as the theme song for the hit Spanish series Money Heist.
South Africa had faced years of disappointment in both the One-Day International and T20 World Cups. However, their triumph over Australia in the WTC final finally put an end to that long wait for an ICC title—their first since securing the 1998 ICC KnockOut, the event that later evolved into the Champions Trophy.
Bavuma's men rose to the challenge, gunning down the 282-run target to complete their fifth-largest chase in Test cricket — with four of those triumphs coming against Australia. It also stands as the second-biggest chase ever recorded at Lord's.
South Africa kept their momentum rolling, extending their winning streak to eight — a remarkable run that started against the West Indies last August. This marks their second-longest Test match winning streak, surpassed only by their nine consecutive victories back in 2002–03.
Bavuma led his team from the front despite hobbling during the crucial chase, where he suffered a hamstring strain early in his innings.
After day 3's play, Prince was all praise for Bavyma's grit and determination in the middle despite his injury.
"It was a big call because of how it could affect Temba's stroke-play and Aiden's rhythm, but both were adamant that he must continue," said Prince of the decision to let Bavuma bat on rather than retire hurt.
Bavuma has faced more than the usual amount of scrutiny after his 2014 debut meant he become the first black African batsman to represent the Proteas in Test cricket.
But Prince said the 35-year-old had shown his leadership qualities by battling on through the pain barrier on Friday.
"Temba has had to fight throughout his career but this could be his defining moment," he added.

Shubman Gill opens up on Rohit-Kohli's Test captaincy ahead of England series
London [UK], June 16 (ANI): Ahead of the five-match Test series against England, India's newly appointed Test skipper Shubman Gill shared his thoughts on stalwart batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's captaincy following their retirement from the longest format of the game. On May 7, Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket after a career spanning 67 Tests and 11 years, ahead of the England tour, kickstarting India's ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle from June 20 onwards. On May 12, the world stood in silence after Kohli announced his decision to retire from Tests more than a month before the highly anticipated five-match Test series against the Three Lions. Speaking at an interview on Sky Sports Cricket about Rohit's Test captaincy, Gill said, 'Rohit (Sharma) bhai is also very aggressive in terms of his tactics. Tactically, he's quite an aggressive captain. He is someone who is very clear with his communication prior to the matches, during the series, and even after the series, about what he wants from the players. PSG cruise past Atletico to win Club World Cup opener
Newly crowned European Champions Paris Saint-Germain launched their bid for Club World Cup glory with a convincing 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid on Sunday. In searing heat at the Pasadena Rose Bowl east of Los Angeles, PSG proved too hot to handle for their Spanish opponents in an impressive opening Group B win. Goals from Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-In sealed the three points for PSG, who delighted a crowd of 80,619 with their adventurous attacking play. The French giants picked up where they had left off in their 5-0 Champions League final mauling of Inter Milan a fortnight earlier, quickly settling into their smooth passing game to control the early exchanges. Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak was soon pressed into action, blocking a Goncalo Ramos shot from just outside the box on 17 minutes as PSG's pressure mounted. Oblak denied PSG again moments later, diving to stop a Khvicha Kvaratskhelia shot that was destined for the bottom left-hand corner. Those early warning shots proved to be a precursor for the game's opening goal in the 19th minute. With the Parisians in complete control, Atletico had to wait until the stroke of half-time before their first shot on goal, France's Antoine Griezmann drawing a smart save from Italy international Gianluigi Donnarumma with a low shot. From the ensuing counter-attack, however, Atletico found themselves 2-0 down. The electric Kvaratskhelia again found space down the left and fed inside to Vitinha, who ghosted into the box before steering a crisp shot beyond Oblak for 2-0. Atletico appeared to have hauled themselves back into the game early in the second half when Julian Alvarez rifled home a low finish to make it 2-1. But the goal was chalked off after VAR spotted a bodycheck by Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul on Desire Doue in the build-up. That effort appeared to buoy Atletico for the remainder of the half, but despite playing with greater intensity they were unable to create a single shot on goal. Lenglet was dismissed after picking up a second yellow card on 78 minutes.
