
VW Polo or T-Cross? How to choose between hatch and crossover

Choosing between a crossover SUV like the Volkswagen T-Cross and its hatchback sibling the VW Polo is not an easy choice.
The market has become crossover-obsessed as these cars feature SUV-like styling and lofty driving positions. They've become practical and attainable status symbols. Yet hatchbacks continue to deliver exactly what most drivers need at a lower price.
Using AutoTrader pre-owned sales data, we compared similar crossovers and hatchbacks produced between 2019 and 2023 to determine whether the pros of owning a crossover outweigh the cons.
Crossover versus hatchback
Many of B-segment hatchbacks have a crossover counterpart like the Peugeot 208 and 2008, Suzuki Baleno and Fronx and Renault Clio and Captur. For this comparison, The Citizen Motoring has weighed up two star performers in the Volkswagen stable.
The VW Polo remains one of South Africa's most popular hatchbacks and one of the few survivors in the ever-shrinking B-segment. With an average listing price of R273 189 the Polo is on average R63 836 cheaper than its crossover counterpart, the VW T-Cross. The T-Cross did offer a lower average mileage of 59 238km compared to the Polo's 67 628km. Both had an average registration age of four years.

The VW Polo and T-Cross base models are both powered by the TSI 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine that produces 70kW of power and 175Nm of torque. But the T-Cross consumes 0.6L/100km more than the VW Polo's claimed 5.3L/100km. It also has a shorter fuel range (678km vs 755km) and emits more carbon emissions. Should it matter to you the VW T-Cross also accelerates from 0 to 100km/h 0.7 seconds slower than the Polo.
VW Polo and T-Cross equally safe
While the T-Cross offers a 34-litre bigger boot than the 351-litre boot of the VW Polo, both vehicles seat five occupants. Both carry the same safety ratings, with Euro NCAP awarding each a five-star score.
The VW T-Cross provides a marginally more spacious interior. Still, the average small, young family is unlikely to notice, making the VW Polo the more sensible choice for used car buyers.
'When you look at the data side by side, the value equation speaks for itself,' said George Mienie, CEO of AutoTrader.
'In many cases, hatchbacks offer lower purchase prices, better fuel economy, and comparable safety and tech to their crossover counterparts, without compromising everyday usability. This isn't about steering consumers away from crossovers, but helping them make decisions that suit both their lifestyles and their wallets.'

ID.Buzz Cargo van gives glimpse of VW Kombi's electric future
And its cure little face won't look out of place next to Lightning McQueen in Cars. Awaiting the highly-anticipated local introduction of the all-new Volkswagen Transporter before the end of the year, we had a little taste of what the iconic VW Kombi can be like beyond in the incoming generation. The German carmaker has not yet availed electric vehicles (EVs) to the Mzansi public, despite a few of these undergoing local testing. Over the last few years, we've driven the eGolf, the ID.3 hatchback and ID.4 SUV. After undergoing testing in DHL's fleet in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, VW has now also given the media a taste of the We were quite excited over the prospect of driving another EV from the VW stable. Albeit only in Cargo guise and not the proper people mover the popular VW Kombi is best known for. In the case of the van, the 'Buzz' part is a light-hearted reference to the buzzing sound emitted from electric cars. It also serves as a link to the Volkswagen Type 2 bus on which its styling is based on. VW Kombi reimagined The Citizen Motoring thought the retro-meets-modern styling was very cool, and so did almost every onlooker. It gives real 'hippie vans' vibes along with modern touches. You will be forgiven for thinking the looks like a character out of the Cars animated movie. The shape of the LED headlights creates the impression of a pair of eyes; the VW logo forms a snub nose along with a nice wide smile in the pattern on the bumper. Rounding off the look are cute round cheeks. Rear barn doors provide access to almost four cubic metres of cargo space. Picture: Jaco van der Merwe The rear and sides of the all-white van with steel wheels and plastic rim covers with are less imaginative, but there is only so much you can do with a panel van. A passenger van version showcased at the Festival of Motoring last year featured very attractive two-tone paintwork along with two-tone alloy wheels. The impressive 3.9 cubic metre cargo hold, which are accessed through a sliding door on either side and double barn door opening tailgate, were not of much use to us other than children kitting it out with a camping mattress over the weekend. Simplistic cabin The very simplistic and industrial-like cabin, which will no doubt get plusher in a passenger offering, is in line with the ID.4 we sampled last year. A 5.3-inch instrument binnacle and 12.9-inch infotainment system take care of most information and entertainment. The usual set of buttons feature on the polyurethane steering wheel, with the gear shifter located Mercedes-Benz style on the right stalk. A few physical buttons remained for volume, climate control and side mirror adjustment, but other than that it was a very simplistic affair. One little oddity was the lack of a reverse camera, with the only offering rear parking sensors. As a solid bulkhead separates the cabin from the cargo hold, you would at least expect seeing what is behind a 4 712mm long vehicle while reversing. The cabin is tough enough for daily commercial use. Picture: Jaco van der Merwe The electric van features an 82kWh battery which sends 150kW of power and 310Nm to a rear electric motor. To put this into perspective, the current VW Kombi's 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine comes in three states of tune; 81kW, 110kW and 146kW. ALSO READ: Honest charm helps VW Kombi stand test of time packs a punch VW claims that the Cargo will sprint from 0 to 100km/h in a respectable 10.3 seconds. But because of the instant torque, it feels much faster. We gave a Ford Ranger Raptor owner a big fright when we managed to stay with the raucous bakkie bumper to bumper during acceleration when the light turned green. Much to the Raptor man's relief, the van's power started waning at the national limit. If you don't take on fast bakkies and manage to consume around 20kWh per 100km, you should get around 400km on a single charge. It also only took 30 minutes at a 120kW DC charger to take the battery up from 24% to 80%. Like with the ID.4, the drive is very easy and pleasant. We could just imagine how nice it will be to cruise around in a plusher passenger version of the taking the family on a cruise. The beloved VW Kombi reimagined for the future. A future that might not be all that far away.

Chery Tiggo 7 plug-in hybrid ready to shock the SUV segment
Sprints from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.4 seconds and won't break the bank at the pumps. Chery made big noise about its hybrid technology at the Shanghai Auto Show in April. After spending some quality time in two of the Chinese carmaker's new energy offerings, we understand Chery's sentiment. Along with the Tiggo Cross self-charging hybrid, Chery last month rolled out the Tiggo 7 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) locally. Two PHEV models head the revised Tiggo 7 line-up, which has dropped the Pro and Pro Max monikers from before. We recently had the Tiggo 7 Plus CSH, short for Chery Super Hybrid, on test. The Plus at R619 900 slots in underneath the R679 900 Ultra CSH and are marked down a full R20 000 as an introductory special offer. And even better, it still includes comprehensive after sales backing which features a 10-year/unlimited mileage battery warranty. ALSO READ: Hybrid warfare as Chery Tiggo 7 takes swipe at Jaecoo J7 Performance-like power Apart from the price, the standout feature of the PHEV model is its power outputs. Numbers so impressive that it will qualify as a performance offering in many other stables. The manufacturer's familiar 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine teams up with an 18.3kWh battery hooked up to a single electric motor to form the CSH setup. Together they produce a total of 265kW of power and 530Nm of torque. This is a significant power bump from the 145kW/290Nm produced by the 1.6-litre blown mill model. Even better than the extra oomph is the difference the single-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) makes compared to any other gearbox Chery has to offer. The DHT means the typical Chinese throttle calibration issues are all out the window, with the power delivery being buttery smooth. The steering is a bit light, but still better than what the Tiggo Cross hybrid feels like. ALSO READ: Newly facelifted Chery Tiggo 7 range priced with more features Throttle calibration issues sorted Chery claims the Tiggo 7 CSH will sprint from 0 to 100km/h in a mere 5.4 seconds and we have no reason to doubt them. The torque is so instantaneous when flooring the accelerator, that it behaves much more like a fully electric car than anything mechanical burdened by turbo lag. Picture: Jaco van der Merwe The twist is routed to the front wheels as Chery do not offer the hybrids as – or any Tiggo 7 for that metter – with all-wheel drive anymore. When you flatten the accelerator, the amount of torque on the front wheels is so great that it leads to wheelspin on any surface with the slightest tinge of dust about it. The Chery Tiggo 7 plug-in hybrid's claimed electric range is 93km. Some logistical issues meant that The Citizen Motoring were unable to charge the car at home or a DC fast charger to put this claim to the test. It did however give us a chance to observe the intricacies of the hybrid system. Chery Tiggo 7's clever system Unlike some brands' PHEV technology, the CSH system does not allow the battery to run flatter than 20%, which is very similar to the BYD Shark bakkie. The engine, along with power restored by regenerative braking, keeps the battery level around the 20% mark. In other words, it then functions like a self-charging hybrid, sans the benefit of a pure electric range. We were unable to determine the accumulated consumption for the car's weeklong stay, but a trip-by-trip readout never exceeded 6.4 litres per 100km, with 5.4L/100km being the lowest. This would indicate that Chery's claimed range of 1 200km with a full tank and full charge is within reach. In terms of styling, the Chery Tiggo 7 CSH adopts the upgrades that have been applied to the entire range. The front end now features a diamond-studded chrome grille and revised LED headlights. We really like the new rear styling, which is a lot more authoritative with its muscular lines. Loads of space and tech Inside, the CSH is as plush and comfortable as we have become used to over the years. Two 12.3-screens features on the dash which is rounded off by the generous use of leather, faux carbon, brushed chrome and veneer. The light emitted through the 1.1 square metre panoramic roof makes the already generous space in the cabin look even bigger. The Chery Tiggo 7 has two 12.3-inch screens. Picture: Jaco van der Merwe The infotainment system features six speakers and is geared with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also features the 'Hello Chery' voice assistant and 540-degree camera. There is also a 50W wirelessly charging tray and multiple Type-C USB ports. One feature that will take getting used to is the absence of a push start button. You can't help yourself looking for the button before realising that there isn't one. Once inside, you simply put it in gear and off you go. Providing your seat belt is fastened of course. Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV guns for glory Boot space is rated at 626 litres, with plenty of leg and headroom in the second row. The Chery Tiggo 7 Plus CSH comes standard with front and rear parking sensors and six airbags. Advanced safety systems include blind-spot monitoring, rear collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert. Chery has been hurting the heritage brands in the C-SUV segment and will continue to do that pridct like this. No buyer in this segment can ignore the attractive pricing and the comprehensive package that comes along with it.

VW vows to keep petrol-powered Golf GTI alive into the next decade
Since its introduction, Volkswagen's (VW) Grand Touring Injection (GTI) nameplate has garnered a cult following – the Golf, the first VW to don this moniker, especially. Now in its eighth generation, the Golf GTI will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026, and to commemorate its illustrious heritage, VW unveiled the Edition 50 model in June. However, with the ever-stringent European emissions regulations and with VW having confirmed an all-electric Golf GTI is in the works, the internal combustion-engined (ICE) Golf GTI's future looked somewhat uncertain. However, some good news for ICE Golf GTI fans has now surfaced. VW Golf GTI to remain ICE into 2030 In an interview with VW enthusiast Jamie Orr, the German marque's CEO, Thomas Schäfer, said the ICE Golf GTI will 'definitely' be kept alive into 2030, where we'll still see a 'strong presence' of ICE vehicles. However, Schäfer did mention that it will probably be 'a little bit' electrified. 'It's not only about the noise and the engine. It can also be transferred into the future – into the electric world. And we have a clear plan for that,' said Schäfer. In the conversation, Schäfer also noted the importance of the GTI brand, saying it is one of the Wolfsburg company's most important sub-brands – known worldwide and with a big following.
