Everton fans raise concerns over historical bridge match day footfall
Football fans have raised concerns about the weight capacity of an historical bridge near a new stadium but the bridge's owners have moved to ease their fears.About 25,000 supporters were in attendance at Everton's new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock in Liverpool last Sunday for the second of three test events to make sure the Toffees' new 52,888 capacity home is ready for the new season.Some fans have since raised concerns on social media about getting over the Bascule Bridge on Regent Road, declaring a stop-go system which was put in place as "farcical".Peel Waters, which owns the bridge, said an HGV load assessment of the highway section of the bridge had been carried out, confirming that it "complies with the normal highways HGV tonnage."
The fixture was held at half capacity, with an evacuation taking place just after an hour's play to allow Everton to secure the relevant safety licences. To manage the flow of supporters, a stop-go system was in place around the bridge, prompting some to question if it could handle the weight of the expected foot traffic. One fan said "the bottleneck" at the bridge following the evacuation was "comical, with a marshal sat in an umpire chair instructing 'stop' n 'go'".They said that this would be farcical with 53,000 supporters, adding: "Please sort it." Another fan said they were concerned about the weight capacity of the Bascule Bridge as many supporters "wanted to walk to town to avoid Sandhills and were met with the stop go system". "Today was only 60% capacity in decent weather," they added.Built in 1932, the Grade II listed structure, which lies within the city's World Heritage Site, was the subject of a £600,000 restoration project funded by Liverpool Council, opening up again in May 2013, after Peel and the local authority sought to improve the existing bridge rather than replace it. A spokesperson for Peel Waters told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that the company was part of the transport working group, chaired by Everton FC, which included local authority stakeholders to resolve any issues around the stadium.When asked if any concerns had been raised directly with Peel Waters about the bridge's effectiveness to deal with fans, they said: "No."

Arsenal deal for Viktor Gyokeres at risk as Sporting issue threat
Arsenal's deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres could be at risk as Sporting CP have threatened to increase the striker's asking price. Earlier this week, Sporting's president, Frederico Varandas, hit out at Gyokeres' agent over suggestions that a transfer fee had already been agreed ahead of the summer transfer window. Gyokeres has a €100 million (£85.1m) release clause in his contract but Sporting have been willing to sell the Sweden international for lower than that amount. Being made an MBE shows I've helped ‘change face of darts'
World number one Luke Humphries says being made an MBE shows how far he has helped to take darts. Humphries has been given the accolade in the King's Birthday Honours along with great rival Luke Littler for their achievements over the last 18 months. The 30-year-old has won eight major titles, including the 2024 World Championship, and set a standard that only Littler has been able to match. 'It's something that me and Luke have really done together,' he told the PA news agency. 'I know he's done it on a much bigger scale, and from a younger generational part of it, but I think him having someone that can compete with him, compete against him and push him all the way, it's made it really exciting for the sport. 'I think that's grown so many new fans. Everyone's talking about darts now, and I think that we're two of the pioneering parts of that. 'We've changed the face of darts over the last couple of years. It's starting to become a younger man's game. It's nice to be at the forefront of that.' Less than two years ago, Humphries' future was in doubt after he suffered anxiety attacks, but he went on a winning spree that has turned his life around and will lead to a visit to the royal family. 'I feel really good about it, it's obviously something that was very unexpected,' he added. 'When I got the letter, I kind of couldn't believe when I opened it and it's a very proud moment. 'My mum and dad are obviously incredibly proud as well. Their son's obviously getting an MBE, which is quite a feat, to be honest. 'It usually happens later on in people's careers, but it's happened in mine pretty early. 'I feel pretty blessed, to be honest, I'm fortunate enough to get one. 'My girlfriend and my son will be very, very proud, especially my son. When he grows up and understands what it means, I'm sure he'd be very, very proud.' David Beckham's rollercoaster journey from Leyton Orient trial to a knighthood
Being knighted would have seemed little more than a distant dream for David Beckham when he used to earn £10 a shift collecting glasses at Walthamstow dog track. Telling the aspiring young footballer he would go on to play for Manchester United and Real Madrid, captain England, marry a pop star and become one of the most recognisable faces on the planet, fronting global brands, might well have seemed just as far-fetched. It was, though, not an easy journey for the former midfielder, who turned 50 in May, to achieve all of that success, both on and off the pitch – with the 2025 Sunday Times Rich List showing the estimated combined net worth of Beckham and his wife Victoria at £500million. After coming through the club's academy as part of the famed 'Class of 92', Beckham announced himself to the Premier League on the opening day of the 1996-97 season with a memorable goal from the halfway line against Wimbledon. Already thinking about life after football during his time in the United States, Beckham became a co-owner of the Inter Miami franchise – with the club entering Major League Soccer for the 2020 campaign and now boasting Lionel Messi on the teamsheet.
