‘GRS in the driver's seat': PBS stresses coalition leadership ahead of Sabah elections
KOTA KINABALU, May 26 — Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) must be in the driving seat in any collaboration for the coming state elections, said Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam.
Joachim said this when asked to comment on Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar's statement that PKR is aiming for at least 13 seats in the Sabah polls.
'As long as GRS has the absolute majority, then we welcome collaboration with other parties.
'But what's important is that GRS must be in the driving seat,' he told reporters after a press conference on Sabah Head of State's upcoming birthday celebration at the Ministry of Communications integrated complex near Kepayan today.
He was also asked to comment on Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) secretary general Dato Seri Azmin Ali's statement that Bersatu has idenfied potential seats to contest in the Sabah elections.
Joachim, who is also Kundasang assemblyman, said they are free to do so as Malaysia is a democratic country, and GRS is open for a friendly contest with the other parties.
He added that to his knowledge, GRS has not had any talks with Bersatu on election cooperation and specific discussions with Perikatan Nasional (PN).
'If possible, it would be best for GRS to win the seats uncontested, but I don't think so,' he said.
On Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) vice president Datuk Masiung Banah's statement that GRS is aiming for at least 52 state seats, he declined to say how many seats PBS is eyeing out of the figure.
'GRS includes PBS and Star, so we are all in it. My side has been asking for seats, but we will discuss about it.
'What is more important is that we identify which seats the coalition can win. GRS must win. Don't talk about individual parties first – GRS,' he said.
Local coalition GRS consists of Gagasan Rakyat, PBS, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS), Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star), Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (PHRS), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and United Sabah National Organisation (Usno). — The Borneo Post

'We also agreed to intensify joint exercises and field training, including rescue operations and emergency simulations, which were recently conducted. 'These trainings not only foster trust between agencies but are also essential in coordinating operating procedures in the event of cross-border disasters,' he said. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said Malaysia and Brunei had proven that close neighbourly ties, combined with strong commitment, could build more robust regional cooperation in disaster and security matters. 'It mostly involves contract (positions),' Anwar said when asked to comment on reports that PETRONAS would cut about 5,000 employees as part of a 'right-sizing' process. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said this after performing Friday prayers with over 500 congregants at Surau Al-Ikhwan, Jalan Pinggiran Putra, near here yesterday, Bernama reported. Also present was Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. On Thursday, PETRONAS president and group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Kamadjaja Aziz was reported to have said that the national oil and gas company would cut about 10% of its workforce as part of its right-sizing and restructuring process. He also denied that the state-owned company would exit its business in Canada. PETRONAS had previously stated that it needs to right-size its workforce to ensure the company's sustainability in the decades to come. It has nearly 50,000 employees, according to its website. Separately, Anwar said he would contact his Thai counterpart, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, regarding the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia. Anwar said that as the Asean Chair, Malaysia took note of the developments in both countries. 'We will issue a statement (on the outcome of the discussion with Paetongtarn) later,' he told reporters. On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops were involved in a brief skirmish in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, which resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Cambodia has since announced its intention to bring the border dispute to the International Court of Justice. Thailand, meanwhile, has reportedly reiterated its commitment to resolving the issue peacefully in accordance with international law, as well as existing agreements and memoranda with Cambodia. Earlier, Anwar received a courtesy call from the new Malaysian Ambassador to the United States, Tan Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob. Anwar said that they discussed, among others, measures to strengthen bilateral ties between Malaysia and the United States, including strategic efforts to attract quality and high-impact foreign investments. 'Among (the topics) touched on included strengthening Malaysia-US ties as well as efforts to attract quality and high-impact foreign investments from the country,' he said in a Facebook post today. In a Facebook post, Ahmad Zahid said the celebration highlights the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his son, Prophet Ismail (AS), two individuals who are symbols of unwavering obedience and sacrifice to Allah SWT. 'May the spirit of sacrifice continue to be a guiding principle in every aspect of our struggle, whether in the family, society and also in developing this beloved country,' he said. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, prayed that Aidiladha would bring peace and blessings to all Malaysians, especially those facing various life challenges.
