KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 — The celebration of Hari Raya Aidiladha is a great symbol that teaches the meaning of obedience, sacrifice and sincerity to the commands of Allah SWT, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
In a Facebook post, Ahmad Zahid said the celebration highlights the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his son, Prophet Ismail (AS), two individuals who are symbols of unwavering obedience and sacrifice to Allah SWT.
'May the spirit of sacrifice continue to be a guiding principle in every aspect of our struggle, whether in the family, society and also in developing this beloved country,' he said.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, prayed that Aidiladha would bring peace and blessings to all Malaysians, especially those facing various life challenges.
'To the pilgrims who are currently in the Holy Land, we pray that your worship will be accepted by Allah SWT and that you will return as accepted haji and hajah,' he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the story of the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) is not just history, but rather a guideline for life that teaches that every sincere struggle will surely receive great rewards from Allah SWT.
He said Aidiladha should be an occasion to express solidarity and love among fellow human beings, especially for those in need, including the poor, apart from reflecting the spirit of togetherness and mercy demanded by Islam.
'May all our worship, hajj, sacrifice and other practices be accepted and blessed by Allah SWT. Indeed, no sacrifice is small in His sight if done with sincere intentions. Selamat Hari Raya Aidiladha to all Muslims,' he said in a Facebook post.

Govt launches tougher laws, mobile courts to tackle child sexual crimes and protect victims

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — The government is intensifying efforts to safeguard children from sexual crimes through legislative improvements and more comprehensive implementation strategies. Deputy director-general (Legal Reform Sector) of the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) under the Prime Minister's Department, Thiyagu Ganesan, said these efforts include the amendments to the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 [Act 792], the expansion of special criminal courts, and ongoing training for legal officers. He said that several key amendments were made to Act 792 in 2023, which include replacing the term 'child pornography' with 'child sexual abuse material', introducing new offences such as live-streaming of sexual crimes and sextortion, and mandating compensation for victims. 'Additionally, the government has recently passed the Online Safety Act 2025 (Act 866), which places the responsibility on digital platforms to remove child sexual abuse content. It also introduces the safety-by-design concept to ensure a safer online environment for children,' he said during an interview on Bernama TV's Apa Khabar Malaysia programme today. To broaden access to justice for victims, Thiyagu noted that the number of Special Courts for Sexual Crimes Against Children has been increased to 81 nationwide, along with the introduction of child-friendly mobile courts. 'These mobile courts are equipped with a child witness room and will travel to where the child is located, hence eliminating the need for the child to travel to a physical courtroom, which may be distressing,' he explained. Thiyagu also underscored the importance of specialised training for prosecutors, judges, and lawyers to improve the handling of child-related cases, in line with the 2023 legal reforms regulating the manner in which child witnesses are examined, cross-examined, and re-examined in court. He said the BHEUU is actively expanding awareness campaigns related to Section 19 of Act 792, which mandates all individuals to report suspected cases of child sexual crimes to the authorities. Touching on the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) Act 1999, he said amendments in 2023 led to the creation of a full-time position for Chief Children Commissioner, along with two Children Commissioners and one additional Commissioner, all dedicated to strengthening oversight of government policies related to child protection. 'Their role is to provide assistance, commentary, and recommendations on government plans and policies, as well as to announce improvements. If issues arise, they will actively speak out to ensure continuous progress,' he added. — Bernama

Anwar: Malaysia-Senegal trade hit RM1.37 billion last year as nations deepen ties in haj, waqf and halal industry

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — Malaysia and Senegal are working to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, haj, waqf, and halal industry, which hold significant potential for joint development. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said these areas were among the key topics discussed during a courtesy call by Senegal's Minister of African Integration and Foreign Affairs, Yassine Fall, earlier today. 'We also exchanged views on various regional and international issues of mutual concern, including developments in the Middle East and the African continent,' Anwar posted on Facebook. Fall is in Malaysia for a two-day official visit starting today as a reciprocation of the official visit by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to Senegal in May 2024. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Senegal reached RM1.37 billion, with Malaysian exports accounting for RM1.35 billion and imports from Senegal valued at RM14.1 million. — Bernama

MOE denies shielding parties in school bullying cases, vows full cooperation in Zara probe

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — The Ministry of Education (MOE) has reiterated that it will not compromise on any matter related to bullying in schools. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said the ministry has never sought to shield any party involved in such incidents, contrary to certain allegations. 'The ministry will not compromise on any matter related to bullying. Secondly, MOE will not and has never attempted to protect anyone involved, as alleged,' he told the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to a supplementary question from Semporna MP Tan Sri Shafie Apdal, who referred to the ongoing bullying case involving Zara Qairina and asked what measures were being taken to protect students and ensure justice. Shafie also stressed that law enforcement must not protect any party involved, regardless of their identity. Wong said the ministry has always been ready to cooperate fully with police in assisting investigations at all levels. He added that the ministry has established guidelines and circulars (SPI) to address disciplinary issues and bullying in schools, which are enforced and updated periodically to strengthen preventive measures. Zara, 13, reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory in Papar on July 16 and was pronounced dead the following day, amid widespread public concern over allegations that her death may have involved school bullying and a cover-up. The exhumation of her remains at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, was completed at 7.15pm on Saturday. They were later sent to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQEI) for a post-mortem scheduled the following morning.
