Anwar: Malaysia-Senegal trade hit RM1.37 billion last year as nations deepen ties in haj, waqf and halal industry
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said these areas were among the key topics discussed during a courtesy call by Senegal's Minister of African Integration and Foreign Affairs, Yassine Fall, earlier today.
'We also exchanged views on various regional and international issues of mutual concern, including developments in the Middle East and the African continent,' Anwar posted on Facebook.
Fall is in Malaysia for a two-day official visit starting today as a reciprocation of the official visit by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to Senegal in May 2024.
In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Senegal reached RM1.37 billion, with Malaysian exports accounting for RM1.35 billion and imports from Senegal valued at RM14.1 million. — Bernama

Anwar meets developers over vertical schools in Madani township
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has met with developers of the Residensi Aman Madani project to discuss the construction of vertical schools to meet the needs of the area's growing population. He said he had also proposed linking the school to the residential blocks via a pedestrian bridge. "Following the launch of Residensi Aman Madani, I convened a meeting with the developer, together with the relevant ministries and agencies, to discuss the provision of a vertical school within the area. "Although there is a nearby primary school, its limited capacity makes it necessary to build a new school to cater to the expanding population," he said in a statement on Facebook today. The prime minister also assured that the new school would be open to all residents and equipped with a preschool, surau, clinic and security centre, all of which will be built in the near future. He said these facilities were designed to ensure residents' comfort and convenience. On Aug 6, Anwar had questioned the developer of Residensi Wilayah Aman Lumayan – part of the Madani government's affordable housing scheme – over the lack of schools in the vicinity. The following day, the developer, Danau Lumayan Sdn Bhd, said that the project had obtained all necessary approvals and complied with regulatory requirements, including access to public amenities such as schools. It said eight schools had been identified within the surrounding area, with at least one located within walking distance of the project site.

Selangor cops: No link between Gnanaraja armed robbery and Guan Eng graft trial
PETALING JAYA, Aug 11 — Selangor police today said there is no evidence connecting last week's armed robbery at businessman G. Gnanaraja's home to the ongoing corruption trial of former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng, in which Gnanaraja is a key prosecution witness. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said valuables were taken during the August 6 incident at Bukit Gasing here, and statements from 16 individuals have been recorded to assist investigations. 'Based on the statements we have recorded, there is no evidence linking the robbery to the trial,' he was quoted as saying in a Buletin TV3 report. Shazeli said the 10 assailants' threats during the attack were intended only to ensure Gnanaraja complied with their demands. 'The threats were more along the lines of 'don't make noise, stay quiet'. Suspects often say that to ensure victims cooperate during robberies,' he was quoted as saying. Gnanaraja had told reporters on August 7 that he would seek protection under the witness protection programme after suffering injuries to his face and hand during the incident. Two security guards were tied up before the robbers entered the house. According to the New Straits Times, the businessman claimed one of the robbers swung a parang towards his mouth and hand, warning him not to speak out or 'play the hero'. Gnanaraja's lawyer RT Rajasekaran had earlier expressed concern that the assault might be linked to his client's role as a witness in Lim's case. Separately, law firm Haijan Omar & Co — acting for Lim — criticised what it described as 'premature and misleading' speculation linking the DAP adviser to the robbery. It urged the media to avoid reporting unverified claims, warning such reports could undermine the judicial process and Lim's presumption of innocence. Lim is accused of using his position as Penang chief minister to solicit a 10 per cent cut of the profits from the proposed undersea tunnel project and accepting RM3.3 million in kickbacks. He also faces two charges of dishonestly misappropriating RM208.7 million worth of state land.

Nearly 100,000 Malaysians became Singaporeans over past decade, Parliament told
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — A total of 97,318 Malaysians have reportedly renounced their citizenship to become citizens of Singapore between 2015 and June 2025, the Home Ministry told Parliament today. According to The Star, the ministry said in a written reply to Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN–Kota Bharu) that there were 7,394 renunciations in 2015, 8,654 in 2016, and 7,583 in 2017. The number rose to 7,665 in 2018 before jumping to 13,362 in 2019. It dropped to 5,591 in 2020, but climbed to 7,956 in 2021 and 5,623 in 2022. The figure surged again to 11,500 in 2023 and reached its highest level in 2024 with 16,930. This year, as of June 30, 6,060 Malaysians have made the change. Malaysia has long battled a significant brain drain, with an estimated 1.86 million Malaysians relocating abroad over the past five decades prompting the establishment of TalentCorp to encourage skilled returnees.
