Selangor cops: No link between Gnanaraja armed robbery and Guan Eng graft trial
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said valuables were taken during the August 6 incident at Bukit Gasing here, and statements from 16 individuals have been recorded to assist investigations.
'Based on the statements we have recorded, there is no evidence linking the robbery to the trial,' he was quoted as saying in a Buletin TV3 report.
Shazeli said the 10 assailants' threats during the attack were intended only to ensure Gnanaraja complied with their demands.
'The threats were more along the lines of 'don't make noise, stay quiet'. Suspects often say that to ensure victims cooperate during robberies,' he was quoted as saying.
Gnanaraja had told reporters on August 7 that he would seek protection under the witness protection programme after suffering injuries to his face and hand during the incident. Two security guards were tied up before the robbers entered the house.
According to the New Straits Times, the businessman claimed one of the robbers swung a parang towards his mouth and hand, warning him not to speak out or 'play the hero'.
Gnanaraja's lawyer RT Rajasekaran had earlier expressed concern that the assault might be linked to his client's role as a witness in Lim's case.
Separately, law firm Haijan Omar & Co — acting for Lim — criticised what it described as 'premature and misleading' speculation linking the DAP adviser to the robbery.
It urged the media to avoid reporting unverified claims, warning such reports could undermine the judicial process and Lim's presumption of innocence.
Lim is accused of using his position as Penang chief minister to solicit a 10 per cent cut of the profits from the proposed undersea tunnel project and accepting RM3.3 million in kickbacks.
He also faces two charges of dishonestly misappropriating RM208.7 million worth of state land.

New judge to take over Dr Mahathir's defamation suit against Anwar
SHAH ALAM, Aug 12 — A new judge will preside over former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's defamation suit against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, following a reassignment of the case. According to Free Malaysia Today, lawyer Alliff Benjamin Suhaimi, representing Anwar, said Judicial Commissioner Zaharah Hussain — who was scheduled to hear the matter next week — had informed the parties that a replacement judge would be appointed. According to the report, Zaharah had previously fixed the trial for August 18 to 20. Zaharah is the second judge to be assigned after Justice Jamhirah Ali recused herself due to family ties with one of the lawyers. Dr Mahathir is suing Anwar for defamation over remarks made at a PKR congress on March 18, 2023. In his court filing, Dr Mahathir claims Anwar's speech implied that he was a 'scoundrel' who had accumulated wealth, avoided taxes, enriched his family, and fostered racial division — allegations he denies. He is seeking RM150 million in damages, a retraction, and a public apology, saying the remarks damaged his reputation and caused personal and political losses.

Bangladesh chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus accorded official welcome at Perdana Putra
PUTRAJAYA: Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh Dr Muhammad Yunus, who is on a three-day official visit to Malaysia, was accorded an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex on Tuesday (Aug 12). He arrived at 9am and was received by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, followed by the playing of both nations' anthems. Yunus then inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 103 personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment, led by Major Arifudin Mohd Yusof. Also present were Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, foreign diplomats and senior government officials.
