Bangladesh chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus accorded official welcome at Perdana Putra
He arrived at 9am and was received by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, followed by the playing of both nations' anthems.
Yunus then inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 103 personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment, led by Major Arifudin Mohd Yusof.
Also present were Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, foreign diplomats and senior government officials.
After the ceremony, Yunus signed the guest book before proceeding to a bilateral meeting with Anwar.
Both leaders are expected to review the progress of Malaysia-Bangladesh ties, focusing on trade and investment, labour, education, tourism and defence, as well as regional and international developments of mutual interest.
Anwar and Yunus will also witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) covering defence, energy, strategic and international studies, semiconductor capacity building and trade promotion.
On Wednesday (Aug 13), Yunus is scheduled to deliver a public lecture and receive an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Social Business from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate will also join a session with members of the Yunus Social Business Centre community and the university network, in a programme jointly organised by UKM.
In 2024, Malaysia-Bangladesh trade rose 5.1% to RM13.35bil (US$2.92bil).
Bangladesh is Malaysia's second-largest trading partner and export destination in South Asia, with key exports including petroleum products, palm oil and chemicals, while imports comprise textiles, footwear, petroleum products and manufactured goods.
The visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in mutually beneficial areas, building on the strong ties established since diplomatic relations began in 1972. - Bernama

Free speech activist groups slam ‘excessive force' by police against plantation workers protesting outside Parliament
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — Civil groups Article 19 and the Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) have today condemned what they described as excessive force by police against peaceful protesters outside Parliament yesterday. In a joint statement, the groups urged the police against obstructing the right to freedom of assembly and to instead facilitate the public's right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution. 'Parliament is not a prohibited location for peaceful assemblies and the police must allow such gatherings to take place without unwarranted interference,' said Nalini Elumalai, Senior Malaysia Programme Officer of human rights group Article 19. Nalini had accused authorities of using unnecessary force to block individuals who were seeking to reach their representatives, to call for a decent housing scheme law for the plantation workers. 'According to international human rights standards, peaceful assemblies are permitted in public spaces and should be within sight and sound of their intended audience, particularly lawmakers, to effectively convey their messages. 'Any restrictions must meet the three part-test of legality, legitimate aim, proportionality and necessity,' she added. The clashes occurred yesterday when police allegedly attempted to physically block plantation workers and activists from marching to Parliament to call for new legislation protecting workers from forced evictions. Hundreds of plantation workers had gathered at Taman Tugu before marching to Parliament to submit a memorandum urging laws to require alternative housing for workers if estates are repurposed. Although the memorandum was handed to both government and opposition MPs, protesters were initially met with a police blockade that caused a scuffle, during which Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) deputy chairperson S. Arutchelvan fell to the ground. Police later claimed an officer was injured by protesters, and said Arutchelvan is being investigated under Section 353 of the Penal Code for allegedly using criminal force to deter a public servant. 'The right to peaceful assembly is a cornerstone of any functioning democracy. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim came to power on a promise of institutional and democratic transformation,' said CIJ executive director Wathshlah Naidu. '[This] incident highlights the urgent need to accelerate the pace of these commitments, which must include not only a review of laws that restrict freedom of expression, but also ensure that law enforcement officers are adequately trained to respect and protect peaceful protesters.'

‘Ask Hajiji and Bung Moktar': Shafie denies leading ‘Kinabalu Move' to oust CM in 2023
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 16 — Parti Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal has denied his involvement in the attempt to oust Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as Sabah chief minister in 2023, dubbed 'Kinabalu Move'. The former chief minister saidthe move had stemmed from a dispute between Hajiji and his then deputy, Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin. 'The Kinabalu Move was not my political move. You should ask them why they were in conflict,' he reportedly told Free Malaysia Today, referring to Hajiji and Bung Moktar. 'We were in the opposition benches all the while,' he added, referring to his party. Kunak assemblyman Datuk Norazlinah Arif had implicated Warisan last month, claiming that four or five Warisan leaders would be named to the state Cabinet if they had backed Bung Moktar in the move. She has since left Warisan to join Hajiji's Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah. In January 2023, rumours arose of Bung Moktar leading the state Umno to work with Parti Warisan to oust Hajiji from his state chief minister post. Both Bung and Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal claimed Hajiji no longer commanded the majority of the 79-seat Sabah legislature. But Anwar brokered a temporary truce when he flew to Kota Kinabalu from an official visit to Indonesia and asked Hajiji to set aside political differences to form a unity state government. Sabah is expected to hold its state election soon, with Pakatan Harapan agreeing to ally itself with Hajiji's Gabungan Rakyat Sabah.

Turkish govt proposes landmark education initiative in Laos
VIENTIANE: The government of the Republic of Türkiye has put forward a significant initiative to deepen cooperation with Laos by proposing the establishment of a Lao-Turkish friendship school in Vientiane. The proposal is part of Turkey's broader commitment to support and promote development in the education sector between the two nations. The proposed school topped the agenda during a meeting held last week between Laos' Minister of Education and Sports, Associate Prof. Dr Thongsalith Mangnomek, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Laos, Oya Yazar. The meeting marked Ambassador Yazar's first official engagement in her new role and served as a platform to reaffirm the long-standing ties and mutual aspirations between the two countries. The Turkish side has selected Tanmixay Secondary School in Xaythany district as the site for construction of the Lao-Turkish friendship school and also plans to renovate Phonpapao kindergarten in Sisattanak district. The project is currently in the preparatory stage, with documents being finalised for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. During the meeting, Associate Prof. Dr Thongsalith Mangnomek reviewed various aspects of cooperation between the Lao Ministry of Education and Sports and the Turkish Maarif Foundation (TMV), which is currently in the process of preparing documents for the Memorandum of Understanding. The two sides acknowledged the numerous achievements of friendship and cooperation between the two countries in the fields of education, health, politics, economics, trade and more. According to the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs, bilateral trade reached a peak in 2018 and 2019 but subsequently declined by 75 per cent when the Covid pandemic struck. The value of two-way trade then rose to more than US$11.83 million in 2023, signalling post-pandemic recovery as trade turnover exceeded the figure of US$11 million recorded in 2022.
