PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday (Aug 12) hosted an official luncheon in honour of the visiting chief adviser of the Government of Bangladesh, Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus. Anwar and Yunus, who arrived together at 11.32am, were greeted with 'Welcome to Malaysia' chants by students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Putrajaya Presint 8(1), while a group of dancers from Istana Budaya performed the Tingkah Madani dance. Also in attendance were Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan and Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. Earlier, Yunus was accorded an official welcome at Perdana Putra, followed by a bilateral meeting with Anwar. Yunus and his official delegation arrived in Malaysia on Monday (Aug 11) for a three-day official visit, at the invitation of Anwar. According to a statement issued by Wisma Putra, Yunus's visit, accompanied by several advisers and senior government officials, reciprocates Anwar's official trip to Bangladesh in October 2024. In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Bangladesh reached RM13.35bil (US$2.92bil), an increase of 5.1% compared with 2023. Bangladesh is Malaysia's second-largest trading partner and export destination in South Asia. Major Malaysian exports to Bangladesh include petroleum products, palm oil and chemicals, while imports comprise textiles, footwear, petroleum products and manufactures. The visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations and foster stronger cooperation in areas of mutual benefit, building upon the strong foundation established since diplomatic ties were forged in 1972. — Bernama

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Bangladesh, on Tuesday (Aug 12), sealed eight memoranda of understanding (MOUs) and agreements aimed at deepening bilateral ties across a wide range of sectors, including defence, energy, higher education, diplomacy, halal development, and private sector cooperation. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Bangladesh Chief Adviser Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus in conjunction with the latter's official visit to Malaysia. Among the key documents exchanged was the MOU on Defence Cooperation between the two governments, signed by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Bangladesh Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain. Also inked was an MOU on cooperation in the supply and infrastructure of liquefied natural gas (LNG), petroleum products and related facilities, signed by Finance Minister II and Acting Economy Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, and Bangladesh Adviser for Road Transport and Bridges, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, and Railways M Fouzul Kabir Khan. Other agreements included the Exchange of Notes on Cooperation in Higher Education and on Training for Diplomats, both signed by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan with Bangladesh's Dr Asif Nazrul and Md Touhid Hossain, respectively. Mohamad signed the Exchange of Note on Cooperation in Higher Education on behalf of Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir. The two sides also formalised cooperation in the halal ecosystem through an Exchange of Notes between Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Senator Dr Zulkifli Hasan and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority executive chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Harun. In the area of strategic research, an MOU was signed between the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia and the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies. From the business sector, MOUs were concluded between MIMOS Services Sdn Bhd and the Bangladesh-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BMCCI), as well as between the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM) and the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI). The visit by Yunus marks a significant step in strengthening Malaysia-Bangladesh relations, with both sides expressing commitment to advancing cooperation in trade, investment, human capital development, and cultural exchange. PUTRAJAYA: Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh Dr Muhammad Yunus, who is on a three-day official visit to Malaysia, was accorded an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex on Tuesday (Aug 12). He arrived at 9am and was received by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, followed by the playing of both nations' anthems. Yunus then inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 103 personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment, led by Major Arifudin Mohd Yusof. Also present were Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, foreign diplomats and senior government officials. After the ceremony, Yunus signed the guest book before proceeding to a bilateral meeting with Anwar. Both leaders are expected to review the progress of Malaysia-Bangladesh ties, focusing on trade and investment, labour, education, tourism and defence, as well as regional and international developments of mutual interest. Anwar and Yunus will also witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) covering defence, energy, strategic and international studies, semiconductor capacity building and trade promotion. On Wednesday (Aug 13), Yunus is scheduled to deliver a public lecture and receive an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Social Business from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The Nobel Peace Prize laureate will also join a session with members of the Yunus Social Business Centre community and the university network, in a programme jointly organised by UKM. SEPANG: The Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh Dr Muhammad Yunus has arrived in Malaysia for a three-day official visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The commercial aircraft carrying Yunus and his delegation landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 at 7.47pm on Monday (Aug 11). They were then welcomed by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail at KLIA's Bunga Raya Complex. Yunus then inspected a guard of honour consisting of 28 officers and personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment led by Captain Mohd Masrur Hidayat Masri.
