‘Ask Hajiji and Bung Moktar': Shafie denies leading ‘Kinabalu Move' to oust CM in 2023
The former chief minister saidthe move had stemmed from a dispute between Hajiji and his then deputy, Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.
'The Kinabalu Move was not my political move. You should ask them why they were in conflict,' he reportedly told Free Malaysia Today, referring to Hajiji and Bung Moktar.
'We were in the opposition benches all the while,' he added, referring to his party.
Kunak assemblyman Datuk Norazlinah Arif had implicated Warisan last month, claiming that four or five Warisan leaders would be named to the state Cabinet if they had backed Bung Moktar in the move.
She has since left Warisan to join Hajiji's Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah.
In January 2023, rumours arose of Bung Moktar leading the state Umno to work with Parti Warisan to oust Hajiji from his state chief minister post.
Both Bung and Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal claimed Hajiji no longer commanded the majority of the 79-seat Sabah legislature.
But Anwar brokered a temporary truce when he flew to Kota Kinabalu from an official visit to Indonesia and asked Hajiji to set aside political differences to form a unity state government.
Sabah is expected to hold its state election soon, with Pakatan Harapan agreeing to ally itself with Hajiji's Gabungan Rakyat Sabah.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Barisan Nasional (BN) will contest all the seats it currently holds in Sabah and move to reclaim traditional constituencies that were previously handed to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in the last state election (PRN). BN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said this to Sinar Harian when asked about seat distribution for the Sabah polls, expected later this year after the State Legislative Assembly automatically dissolves on November 11. He stressed that BN remains firm in its stand to return to its traditional seats, which he said were 'given away' to a coalition partner during the previous state election. 'We will remain firm in contesting the seats we won, as well as the traditional seats that were previously handed over to Bersatu. 'During the last Sabah polls, many Umno-BN traditional seats were given to Bersatu in the spirit of cooperation. 'But in the end, we were stabbed in the back. We do not want that to happen again,' he reportedly said after officiating the joint delegates' meeting of the Rembau Umno Women's, Youth and Puteri wings in Seremban today. Mohamad also underlined that Umno-BN must emerge as the dominant party in Sabah after the coming election. On Gabungan Rakyat Sabah's (GRS) plan to contest 39 seats, he said this would depend on the outcome of ongoing negotiations. 'We have appointed the Umno secretary-general and the BN secretary-general to negotiate on seat distribution. 'What matters is that BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) have finalised their cooperation to face the Sabah polls. The rest is still open,' he said, as cited by the national daily. He added that BN does not want to lock itself too tightly into early discussions, preferring to give space to the joint committee to work out the most effective cooperation and allocation of seats. 'We want the negotiations to be concluded quickly because the election is drawing near. 'The grassroots machinery must understand and be clear about the party's direction as we head into this election,' he said.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the move included the recent approval of about 40,000 acres of land to be gazetted as villages in areas such as Sipitang, Tenom and several other districts. He said the gazetting exercise demonstrates the government's commitment to resolving long-standing issues faced by villagers, many of whom have lived on the land for generations. Hajiji said this assurance means villagers will no longer be seen as squatters but recognised as legitimate residents in settlements they have called home for decades. He was speaking at the Land Allocation Ceremony for the gazettement of Kampung Karamunting Baharu at SK Karamunting Open Hall on Friday, where he witnessed the handover of land owned by the Sandakan Municipal Council to be gazetted as Native Reserve Land. Hajiji described the event as a historic moment for the community, not only as a handover of land but also as recognition of the rights and history of residents who have lived in the area for more than 30 years. Women's minister says no need for new anti-bullying law, Penal Code sufficient
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Malaysia does not need a new law to tackle bullying as the offence is already covered under the Penal Code, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said today. Harian Metro reported that the women, family and community development minister said stricter enforcement is more important than drafting new laws, though amendments could be considered if necessary. 'The Penal Code states that bullying is a criminal offence and provides for a fine of up to RM3,000. This shows the current mechanism remains relevant and enforceable,' she told reporters in Kuching. 'At this stage, there is no need to draft a new law. What matters is strict implementation and enforcement.' She added that evolving circumstances may provide ideas for strengthening existing legislation, but responsibility for lawmaking lies with the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department. 'However, we can make proposals or raise ideas in Cabinet discussions if there are issues on bullying that need to be addressed,' she was quoted as saying by the national daily. Nancy also stressed the role of parents, schools and the wider community in curbing bullying, which has sparked public concern following a spate of cases in schools and universities that went viral on social media. Her comments came after the Anti-Bullying Act Advocacy Movement (GAB) urged the government to introduce legislation to define bullying, set out preventive measures and establish complaint procedures. GAB said current laws, including the Penal Code and the Child Act 2001, lack specific provisions and do not adequately protect victims.
