‘Ask Hajiji and Bung Moktar': Shafie denies leading ‘Kinabalu Move' to oust CM in 2023

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 16 — Parti Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal has denied his involvement in the attempt to oust Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as Sabah chief minister in 2023, dubbed 'Kinabalu Move'. The former chief minister saidthe move had stemmed from a dispute between Hajiji and his then deputy, Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin. 'The Kinabalu Move was not my political move. You should ask them why they were in conflict,' he reportedly told Free Malaysia Today, referring to Hajiji and Bung Moktar. 'We were in the opposition benches all the while,' he added, referring to his party. Kunak assemblyman Datuk Norazlinah Arif had implicated Warisan last month, claiming that four or five Warisan leaders would be named to the state Cabinet if they had backed Bung Moktar in the move. She has since left Warisan to join Hajiji's Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah. In January 2023, rumours arose of Bung Moktar leading the state Umno to work with Parti Warisan to oust Hajiji from his state chief minister post. Both Bung and Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal claimed Hajiji no longer commanded the majority of the 79-seat Sabah legislature. But Anwar brokered a temporary truce when he flew to Kota Kinabalu from an official visit to Indonesia and asked Hajiji to set aside political differences to form a unity state government. Sabah is expected to hold its state election soon, with Pakatan Harapan agreeing to ally itself with Hajiji's Gabungan Rakyat Sabah.

Warisan's peninsula fiasco rubbished claim to be ‘local party'

Published on: Thursday, August 14, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 14, 2025 Text Size: Norazlinah: Warisan's expansion into West Malaysia was aimed at positioning its President, Shafie Apdal, as a prime ministerial candidate. Kota Kinabalu: Warisan's chest thumping about being a local Sabah party no longer holds water following its expansion into Peninsular Malaysia four years ago which ended disastrously, said former party leader Norazlinah Arif. The former Warisan women's chief said the move — widely seen as a strategy to project party president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal as a prime ministerial candidate — reflected a shift away from putting Sabah first. The Kunak Assemblywoman claimed that Shafie was more focused on leading Putrajaya, despite managing the state poorly between May 2018 and September 2020, during his tenure as chief minister. 'Sabah lacked proper governance, yet he (Shafie) had national ambitions. His heart was not set on putting Sabah first and leading it to greater heights. 'His personal ambitions go far beyond the state's borders,' she said. In 2020, Warisan decided to spread its wings to the peninsula, establishing branches and divisions in Johor and Selangor — states with a high concentration of Sabahans. It officially launched its West Malaysian chapter the following year. However, the party failed to win any of 25 seats it contested in Peninsular Malaysia in the 2022 general election. It also performed poorly in Sabah, managing to retain only three of the eight seats it won in the 14th general election. Among the casualties were Deputy President Datuk Darell Leiking and Information Chief Datuk Azis Jamman who failed to defend their Penampang and Sepanggar seats, respectively. Separately, former Warisan Supreme Council member Mohammad Mohamarin said the party's foray into West Malaysia caused discomfort among some of its leaders. He said the resignation of former vice-president Datuk Peter Anthony — just days after Warisan formalised its West Malaysian expansion — was indicative of internal discord over the party's strategic direction. 'Warisan used to promote itself as a local party that championed the people's cause, but they don't anymore. 'It is also unlikely to dominate Sabah politics in the future,' said the Banggi Assemblyman, who quit the party more than two years ago. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Shafie vows action over Sabah graft scandal if Warisan forms state govt

PARLIAMENT | A Warisan-led state government after the next 17th Sabah election will pursue charges against more Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) lawmakers implicated in the mining licence corruption scandal, said party president Shafie Apdal. Debating the 13th Malaysia Plan, the Semporna MP echoed concerns that so far only two assemblypersons have been charged, along with businessperson Albert Tei, who exposed the series of videos that implicated Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor and over a dozen lawmakers.

Education Ministry denies shielding anyone in bullying cases

Published on: Monday, August 11, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 11, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: Pic by Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Education (MOE) has reiterated that it will not compromise on any matter related to bullying in schools. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh ( pic ) said the ministry has never sought to shield any party involved in such incidents, contrary to certain allegations. Advertisement 'The ministry will not compromise on any matter related to bullying. Secondly, MOE will not and has never attempted to protect anyone involved, as alleged,' he told the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to a supplementary question from Semporna MP Tan Sri Shafie Apdal, who referred to the ongoing bullying case involving Zara Qairina and asked what measures were being taken to protect students and ensure justice. Shafie also stressed that law enforcement must not protect any party involved, regardless of their identity. Wong said the ministry has always been ready to cooperate fully with police in assisting investigations at all levels. Advertisement He added that the ministry has established guidelines and circulars (SPI) to address disciplinary issues and bullying in schools, which are enforced and updated periodically to strengthen preventive measures. Zara, 13, reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory in Papar on July 16 and was pronounced dead the following day, amid widespread public concern over allegations that her death may have involved school bullying and a cover-up. The exhumation of her remains at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, was completed at 7.15pm on Saturday. They were later sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) for a post-mortem scheduled the following morning. - Malay Mail * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Shafie's Spotify playlist: 2018 broken promises on loop

AMID the looming Sabah state election, Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal is reaching for his old playbook. Once again, he is promising to cancel student loans, hand out free education and restructure Yayasan Sabah into some kind of financial utopia. To the untrained eye, this might sound fresh and inspiring. To Sabahans who remember 2018 to 2020 when he was the chief minister, it's bull excrement. The proposal to abolish PTPTN (National Higher Education Fund Corporation) and Yayasan Sabah loans is not new. In fact, it's almost a word-for-word re-run of what Shafie uttered back when Warisan was in power. The only thing missing is an admission that he had two full years to deliver on these promises but somehow never fulfilled his promise. What happened between 2018 and 2020? Let's be clear. Shafie was not just a regular Sabah state assemblyman during that period. As chief minister he could have picked up the phone to call Yayasan Sabah and said, 'Let's wipe out these loans'. But no such call came. There were no sweeping reforms. No cancelled loans. No full scholarships. Not even a symbolic RM100 rebate. Now, with the state election clock ticking, are we supposed to believe that it will be different this time around? That this time, once he's back in power, he will finally deliver the things he conveniently 'forgot' to do the last time? Sabahans aren't naïve. They remember campaign theatre when they see it. GRS is doing all the work While Warisan replays old campaign narratives like a broken record, the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS)-led state government under Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has quietly focused on delivering results. No fireworks, no drama – just policies that matter. Take the Higher Education Registration Assistance Fund for B40 students. Or the expansion of the Sabah Maju Jaya Scholarship. Or the increased allocations to Yayasan Sabah for real, functioning scholarships – not just promises at media conferences. Add to that the re-development of rural schools and targeted aid for out-of-state Sabahan students, one can expect to have a record that speaks louder than slogans. This isn't about who can shout the loudest during campaign season. It's about who did the work when the cameras were off. Sabahans deserve better than campaign nostalgia It's easy to make big promises when you're not the one holding the cheque book. But leadership is about doing, not dreaming. Shafie had his chance. He didn't abolish any loans. He didn't offer sweeping scholarships. He didn't transform Yayasan Sabah. Now he returns with the same promises he failed to deliver before, hoping that voters have short memories. But Sabahans possess elephant-like memory. They remember the silence after the speeches. The lack of follow-through. The old wine in a re-cycled bottle. The choice is not between new and old in the upcoming state polls. It's between action and nostalgia. One side is rolling up its sleeves. The other is flipping through an old script, hoping that nobody notices the re-run. Sabah deserves better than re-runs. It deserves results. – Aug 11, 2025 Main image credit: Shafie Apdal/Facebook
