INDORE: A phone call between Sonam Raghuvanshi (in pic) and her mother-in-law on the day of Raja Raghuvanshi's murder has become a chilling focus of the police investigation - was Raja already dead by then, or worse, was he being led to his death while Sonam calmly spoke to his family?.
ACP Poonamchand Yadav told TOI that the sequence of events shared by the accused times the murder soon after that call. "That one call haunts us," he said. "We now know from interrogations that the murder happened shortly after that phone conversation." The call was placed when the couple was reported to be on their way up after visiting a double-decker bridge in Shillong's Nongrait village. Sonam told her mother-in-law, Uma Raghuvanshi, that she would not break her 'Gyaras' fast just because they were away.
When Uma called and asked her to connect with her son, Sonam replied sweetly, "Raja is walking ahead... his phone is in the bag, I'll get him to call you later." She was panting and so Uma disconnected the call.
"That was the last time we ever tried to talk to her," Uma said, her voice trembling. "I could never have imagined that the daughter-in-law, speaking so gently on the phone, was actually scouting for a spot to kill my son - perhaps even moments away from doing it." Police are now analyzing call duration, location, and voice tone in what they describe as a "cold-blooded calm before the kill."

Sangli: Just days after the gruesome Raja Raghuvanshi murder case sent shockwaves across the country, another chilling crime involving a newlywed couple has emerged, this time from Maharashtra, where a woman, married for just three weeks, allegedly killed her husband. The woman used an axe to kill her husband while he slept following a heated argument over the latter's insistence on consummating their marriage 15 days after the wedding. The incident took place in Sangli district on the night of June 10, officials confirmed on Thursday. According to the police, the couple -- Anil Lokhande and Radhika Lokhande -- were married on May 23. The officials mentioned that it was Anil's second marriage. His first wife had died of cancer. On Tuesday night, the couple engaged in a violent altercation over consummation that reportedly continued late into the night. Radhika was exasperated by Anil's insistence, and around midnight, when he retired to bed, in a sudden act of rage, she picked up an axe and fatally struck her husband on the head, the officials said. He died instantly, officials said. Shortly after committing the murder, Radhika reportedly called her cousin and confessed to the crime. Police arrested her on Wednesday and produced her before a magistrate, who remanded her to two days' police custody. A case has been registered against her under Section 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to murder. Police sources indicate that ongoing family discord may have led to the crime, though further investigations are underway to determine the precise motive. This shocking incident comes close on the heels of the sensational murder of Indore-based Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya. Raja and his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, were married on May 11 and had left for their honeymoon on May 20. Merely three days into the trip, both went missing. The case, which initially began as a missing person report, took a sinister turn when Raja's body was discovered in a deep gorge in Meghalaya on June 2. His autopsy revealed two severe head injuries -- one at the back and another on the front -- confirming a brutal murder. Further investigation uncovered a premeditated plot allegedly orchestrated by Sonam, her lover Raj Kushwaha, and three of his friends -- Akash Rajput, Anand Kurmi, and Vishal Singh Chauhan. On June 7, Sonam surrendered in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. All five accused, including Sonam and Raj, confessed to the crime and have been remanded to eight days of police custody.

The Meghalaya government on Thursday felicitated a tourist guide and 35 others for helping the state police trace the body of Raja Raghuvanshi , who was allegedly killed by his wife Sonam and her four aides during their honeymoon in the state, and in the investigation process. State minister Paul Lyngdoh distributed cash rewards of Rs 5.4 lakh to travel guide Albert Pde and 35 others, including several mountaineers, and tour facilitators, for actively assisting the police in search operations during a preliminary investigation into the case. Raghuvanshi and his wife went missing while vacationing in Sohra area in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district on May 23. His body was found in a gorge on June 2, while a search for his wife was conducted. Sonam Raghuvanshi's Cousin Paid Hitmen Hired For Raja's Murder: Police
A cousin of Sonam Raghuvanshi had cleared the first installment of payment to the three hitmen who were hired to murder her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, in Meghalaya last month, police officers probing the case said on Thursday. While five people have been arrested so far, Sonam's cousin Jitendra Raghuvanshi has now come under the police's scanner for his possible involvement in the crime that has sent shockwaves across the country. According to the police, Jitendra's UPI account was used to pay the first installment of the money that was promised to hitmen Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan and Anand Kurmi by Sonam on May 23 - the day Raja was murdered. It could not be immediately ascertained if Jitendra had facilitated the payment before or after the crime was committed. Jitendra is a part of the family business that is mostly monitored by Sonam, and reportedly oversees the expenses, police said. "We are trying to find out if he was aware of the reason behind the payment," one of the officers said. Sources said Sonam had offered Rs 20 lakh to the hitmen, although an official confirmation or statement in this regard is also awaited. Besides the hitmen, Sonam and her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, have been arrested for the murder. Police said Raj was also involved in Sonam's family business and worked as an accountant at the furniture sheet unit owned by them. The two wanted to marry each other. Police earlier said that Vishal was the first one to attack Raja with a machete. On May 11, 24-year-old Sonam and 29-year-old Raja got married, despite the former's relationship with Raj. After their wedding in Indore, Raja and Sonam travelled to Meghalaya for honeymoon. They disappeared on May 23, hours after checking out of a homestay at Nongriat village, 20 km from where Raja's body was found on June 2. Amid an intense search for "missing" Sonam, she surfaced in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur on Sunday night and later surrendered at Nandganj police station. This came hours after Akash, Vishal, and Anand were arrested from Uttar Pradesh and Indore and Sagar towns (in Madhya Pradesh). Raj was arrested later. On Wednesday, Sonam reportedly confessed to killing her husband in the northeastern state. Her brother Govind said his family has snapped all ties with her. He also expressed solidarity with Raja's grieving family members and vowed to help them in their fight for justice in a case which has shocked the nation. Govind also demanded that his sister be hanged if found guilty.
