$1 million lottery prize expiring soon, winning ticketholder has less than 2 weeks to claim
Someone in Virginia may have a $1 million Mega Millions ticket in their possession, and they only have less than two weeks before their fortune disappears.
According to lottery officials in Virginia, the individual has not come forward after winning $1 million in the Nov. 22, 2024, drawing. The ticket was bought at a 7-Eleven in Deltaville.
By law, winning tickets in Virginia expire 180 days following the drawing, meaning the ticket will become "worthless" at 5 p.m. on May 21, lottery officials said.
The winning numbers for the November drawing were 13-20-26-32-65, and the Mega Ball number was 2. The ticket matched the first five numbers but missed the Mega Ball number, which meant it missed out on a jackpot of more than $453 million.
By law, if the prize is unclaimed, the winnings will go to Virginia's Literary Fund. The fund provides low-interest loans to localities for public school construction, renovations and technology upgrades, lottery officials said.
Whoever the lucky winner is can contact the Virginia Lottery and redeem the ticket at one of its eight customer service centers across the state.
Mega Millions announced it would be more than doubling the cost of the game, going from $2 a ticket to $5 in early April.
"Beyond big jackpots, players told us they want bigger non-jackpot prizes and that's exactly what this new game delivers," Joshua Johnston, lead director of the Mega Millions Consortium, said in a news release.
Although tickets have become pricier, the possible winnings have increased due to a new built-in multiplier, which increases non-jackpot prizes by two, three, four, five, or 10 times. According to lottery officials, the game's odds have also increased, as there's a 1 in 23 chance of winning, compared to the previous 1 in 24.
Tickets can be purchased in-person at gas stations, convenience stores and grocery stores. Some airport terminals may also sell lottery tickets.

Airline cancels all flights, shuts down leaving travelers stranded
Silver Airways, a regional airline based in Florida, abruptly canceled all flights on Wednesday, June 11, leaving travelers stranded after announcing bankruptcy. "We regret to inform you that we are ceasing operations as of today, June 11, 2025," the Fort-Lauderdale-based company posted on it social media pages. "In an attempt to restructure in bankruptcy, Silver entered into a transaction to sell its assets to another airline holding company, who unfortunately has determined to not continue Silver's flight operations." The carrier operates in Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. "Please do not go to the airport," the airline wrote. "All credit card purchases should be refundable through your credit card company or your travel agency." The move, the company reported on social media, came after a potential buyer decided not to fund the airline's operations during a sale out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. As the airline wrote on social media, all tickets purchased by credit card will be fully refundable to the form of purchase. According to Robert W. Mann, Jr., a former airline executive officer and current president of R. W. Mann and Co., an independent airline consultancy, tickets not purchased by credit card will still be eligible for refunds, but those would-be passengers will have to get in line with other airline creditors. Passengers with tickets who need to travel soon will likely need to purchase tickets on other airlines at higher prices, according to Mann. It's very rare for airlines in the U.S. to completely go out of business. Often, struggling airlines get purchased by other carriers or folded into another company's operations. According to Mann, a few small regional airlines that operated on behalf of larger carriers went out of business during the height of the COVID pandemic, but those larger airlines reshuffled service to bridge the gap. Other smaller airlines like Tailwind, which provided scheduled seaplane service between New York and Boston, have also gone out of business more recently. Tailwind shut down operations in 2024, according to Mann. (This story was updated to add new information.) Natalie Neysa Alund is a senior reporter for USA TODAY. Starbucks menu upgrade: Protein cold foam, new croissants undergo testing
Starbucks menu upgrade: Protein cold foam, new croissants undergo testing Show Caption Hide Caption Starbucks to cut 13 drinks from menu amid restructuring Starbucks cuts 13 drinks from menu, streamlining operations and improving service, with more reductions expected in coming months. Straight Arrow News Protein-packed coffees and raspberry-filled pastries could soon be coming to a Starbucks near you. The Seattle-based coffee giant is testing out new menu items amid its 'Back to Starbucks' strategy, led by CEO Brian Niccol. The former Chipotle chief executive has emphasized the importance of providing customers the 'right vibe' after a slump in sales. "It's time for us to lead again," Niccol told a crowd of Starbucks employees during the company's Leadership Experience 2025 event on June 10. "We're going to lead in warm, welcoming coffee houses. We're going to lead in innovation. Innovation to our menu." USA TODAY had an early look at the new food and drink products during the Las Vegas event. Most of the items are undergoing Starbucks' 'Starting Five' program, in which five U.S. Starbucks locations try out new products and offer feedback before a broader launch. Because testing is ongoing, the products sampled by USA TODAY may change before the final iterations launch nationwide. Protein cold foam Starbucks is testing out a new protein cold foam option that would add roughly 15 grams of protein to its drinks through the addition of an unsweetened protein powder. Starbucks offered samples of a banana protein cold foam on June 10, but the protein can be added to any cold foam flavor. Other retailers, including coffee chain Dutch Bros, already offer high-protein offerings as consumers ‒ especially Gen Z ‒ show growing interest in health and building muscle. The number of high-protein drinks jumped 122% between 2020 and 2024, according to Innova Market Insights, which analyzes food and beverage industry data. "It's on trend. It's delicious," Niccol said about the protein cold foam. Starbucks did not share a date for the new cold foam's release, but Niccol said it would hit stores 'very soon.' New bakery items Starbucks is updating its classic croissant and adding two new bakery items to its stores: a raspberry croissant filled with jam and a double chocolate cookie topped with flaky sea salt. 'We're going to get back to fresh-baked food,' Niccol said. Starbucks 1971 Roast A new coffee, dubbed the Starbucks 1971 Roast, is set to roll out at coffee houses in the U.S. and Canada this winter. The dark roast is a blend of beans from Sumatra, Colombia and Brazil. Strato Frappuccino Starbucks is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its Frappuccino with a new offering: the Strato Frappuccino. Strato – or 'layer,' in Italian – adds a cloud of cold foam on top of any Frappuccino flavor. The drink sampled by USA TODAY at the Starbucks Leadership Experience in Las Vegas featured a Coffee Frappuccino topped with brown sugar cold foam and cinnamon. Unveiled earlier this year, the Strato Frappuccino will be available at Starbucks stores nationwide this summer. In addition to the Brown Sugar Strato Frappuccino, Starbucks will also offer a Salted Caramel Mocha Strato Frappuccino and a Strawberry Matcha Strato Frappuccino.
