Mock Drill To Be Conducted In Delhi Today: Know The Reason And What To Expect
The drill, titled "Exercise Suraksha Chakra," is part of a multi-state integrated disaster management exercise.
In this mock drill, preparations to deal with disaster scenarios, including earthquakes and industrial and chemical hazards will be tested.
The primary location for the drill in Delhi will be the Divisional Commissioner's office, which also serves as the Command and Control Centre and the headquarters of the District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs).
The drill is being jointly conducted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), and the Indian Army's Western Command and Delhi Area Headquarters.
Where Will The Mock Drill Be Held?
The mock drill will take place at 55 locations across 11 districts in Delhi. In addition to the nationa; capital, the exercise will also be held in two districts of Uttar Pradesh, Noida and Ghaziabad, and five districts in Haryana, including Gurugram, Faridabad, Palwal, Nuh, and Rewari. The drill will be conducted at multiple sites such as government offices, industrial zones, schools, metro stations, hospitals, and other public areas.
What Will Happen In The Mock Drill?
During the mock drill, a hypothetical situation of an earthquake and chemical leak will be created. Emergency sirens may be sounded, loudspeaker announcements may be made, emergency alerts and fire alarms may be activated, and relief and rescue vehicles may be seen moving. Practice will be carried out to evacuate the injured from the spot to hospitals. Traffic may also be stopped temporarily at some places.
DDMA Issues Guidelines for Citizens
DDMA CEO Krishan Kumar said that citizens should remain calm and participate wherever possible in the exercise as they might notice increased presence of police, fire, and emergency vehicles throughout the day on Friday.
Disaster Management Symposium
Earlier, NDMA, DDMA and Indian Army's Western Command and Headquarters of Delhi Area jointly commenced first-of-its-kind multi-state disaster management symposium on Tuesday with focus on earthquake and chemical hazard preparedness across 18 districts of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
"Simulations included a chemical emergency scenario led by Brigadier (retired) Ravinder Gurung and an earthquake response briefing by Brigadier Thakkar. These exercises underscored a key message: preparedness today is the foundation of resilience tomorrow," the NDMA said on social media platform X.
According to the NDMA, more than 200 mock disaster drills have been organised over the past five years across India.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also suggested holding such exercises in every district once every three years.

In a letter to Naidu, Shashidhar Reddy, Former Vice Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), said FWC is a viable, low-cost alternative to the Banakacharla project, which can be implemented in about two years. The FWC is capable of providing water for three crops annually and can cater to 30 lakh acres at a total cost of just Rs 4,500 crores (at Rs 15,000 per acre at current rates). This would be a fraction of even the minimum basic estimated cost of Rs 81,900 crore for the Banakacharla project proposed by the Andhra Pradesh government, he said. Shashidhar Reddy recalled that Naidu, as Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, had launched the 'Neeru-Meeru' (massive watershed managment) programme in 2000 in the wake of a devastating drought. The project yielded "excellent results". "I see you as a visionary and a class apart. I am confident that you will seriously consider shelving the Polavaram-Banakacharla project and opt for implementing FWC at a fraction of its cost with triple benefit of providing water for three crops in a year," he said in the letter to Naidu. In the Four Waters concept, the focus is on using rainwater, surface water, groundwater, and maintenance of soil moisture at a high level to improve water availability and agricultural productivity. The concept promotes the use of simple, low-cost earthen structures like percolation tanks, farm ponds, and trenches instead of large cement structures. The Polavaram (Godavari)-Banakacharla Link Project proposed by the Andhra Pradesh government faced opposition from Telangana. The Telangana government complained to the Union Jal Shakti Ministry that the project hurts the state's interests.

In Delhi-NCR mock drills, Indian Army is the latest addition
To ensure preparedness during emergency situations, especially before Independence Day, authorities have collaborated to conduct massive mock drill exercises across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). In one such exercise conducted last month, a new participant was the Indian Army. With the support of the Army's Ghatak Brigade, the Delhi Police, along with over 20 government departments and units, conducted a two-day anti-terror mock drill at more than 10 key locations across the national capital on July 17 and 18. A senior government officer said that similar anti-terror mock drill exercises have been organised over the past three years ahead of Independence Day, but the Army had never been involved until now. 'This was necessary as the threat perception in the national capital has increased over the past few months. With recent attacks on tourists and the escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan, the need for enhanced preparedness has become more urgent. We must be ready to respond to any hostile situation,' an official source said. 'The mock drill process is structured in layers, with each participating agency assigned a specific role. However, the Army follows its own distinct approach to handling hostile situations,' the source said. 'We usually call the Army when a situation gets out of control, whether it's an anti-terror operation or a natural disaster. Authorities are preparing in advance to ensure better coordination with the Army if such a situation arises,' the source added. Soldiers from two different brigades based in Delhi's Shankar Vihar participated in the two-day anti-terror mock drills at key locations such as the Lotus Temple, Hotel Claridges, and Hindu College of Delhi University, he said. Another source added that fake alerts — such as bomb threats, terrorist sightings, and hostage situations — were generated during these exercises on July 17 and 18. These calls were promptly responded to, and mock operations were carried out swiftly and in full coordination by all participating agencies, including soldiers from the Indian Army's Ghatak Brigades. He further said a colonel-level officer of the Army led the operations. The other agencies that participate in such mock drill exercises include the local police, Delhi Fire Service (DFS), Delhi Metro, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), CATS ambulances, hospitals, bomb detection teams, bomb disposal squads, dog squads, the Crime Branch, and the Special Cell and Special Branch of the Delhi Police. On Friday, August 1, too, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), DDMAs, and officers of the Western Command of the Indian Army have organised a multi-state integrated disaster management mock drill at 55 locations in Delhi and NCR. This drill, Exercise Suraksha Chakra, will ensure preparedness during natural disasters like earthquakes.
