Citadel Securities' Esposito says US deficit is a 'ticking time bomb'

NEW YORK (Reuters) -The U.S. government's growing debt pile is a "ticking time bomb" and how the Trump administration reacts to this crisis is going to be "super important", Citadel Securities President Jim Esposito said on Thursday.
Several other leaders of the financial services industry have issued similar warnings about the current U.S. deficit in recent weeks. Earlier in June, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said the U.S. national debt is a "big deal" that could create a "tough time" for the bond market that causes spreads to widen.
"The stock of debt and the budget deficit is a ticking time bomb. No one is smart enough to predict when exactly it will rear its ugly head. We've been talking about this for more than 20 years, so in some ways the market's gone into complacency, but over a multi-year period we can work this out," Esposito said at the Piper Sandler Global Exchange & Trading Conference.
Shifting U.S. economic policies have sent bond markets tumbling in recent weeks. In May, ratings agency Moody's downgraded the U.S. sovereign credit rating.
Long-dated bonds have been under pressure due to deficit concerns, with investors delivering a tepid response to a 20-year auction in May and sending the 30-year bond yield to its highest level since October 2023. Higher bond yields can translate into higher borrowing costs for consumers, businesses and governments.
Citadel Securities, a market-making behemoth that was founded by hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin, plans to double down on cryptocurrency trading this year under a new regulatory framework.
"This year you'll see us getting more active providing liquidity on specific crypto exchanges. So that's a part of our strategic plan. I think we'll execute on that in this calendar year, like everybody else," said Esposito.
"We're excited by the prospects of the SEC (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission) coming out with the rule set. So crypto is definitely a space we're going to get bigger in, and we're excited about the prospects," he added.
The market volatility this year has boosted the fortunes of large market makers like Citadel Securities and Jane Street. During the first quarter of 2025, Citadel Securities' net trading revenue surged 45% to $3.4 billion, while its profit jumped 70% - a record for the firm, according to people familiar with the matter.
"The number of growth opportunities that lie in front of us is almost unlimited. In our core businesses, our equity business at the moment is a bit too skewed towards the U.S. at the expense of the rest of the world - so Europe is a very big growth opportunity for us," Esposito said.

Iran says it obtained sensitive Israeli nuclear documents

DUBAI (Reuters) -Iranian intelligence agencies have obtained a large trove of sensitive Israeli documents, some related to the nuclear plans and facilities of Tehran's arch enemy, Iran's state media reported on Saturday. There was no immediate official comment from Israel and it was not clear whether the report was linked to a reported hacking of an Israeli nuclear research centre last year that Tehran is choosing to divulge now amid heightened tensions over its nuclear programme. "Although the operation to obtain the documents was carried out some time ago, the sheer volume of materials and the need to transport them safely into Iran necessitated a news blackout to ensure they reached the designated protected locations," state-run PressTV reported, quoting unnamed sources. "(Sources familiar with the matter) also noted that the abundance of documents is so vast that reviewing them, along with viewing images and videos, has consumed a significant amount of time," PressTV added, without giving details of the documents. In 2018, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israeli agents had seized a huge "archive" of Iranian documents showing Tehran had done more nuclear work than previously known. U.S President Donald Trump has threatened Iran with bombing if Tehran did not come to an agreement with Washington over its nuclear programme. But Trump in April reportedly blocked a planned Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear sites in favour of negotiating a deal with Tehran. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday that abandoning uranium enrichment was "100%" against the country's interests, rejecting a central U.S. demand in talks to resolve a decades-long dispute over Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

Three killed in Russian attack on Ukraine's Kharkiv; Ukrainian drones injure two near Moscow

LONDON (Reuters) -Overnight missile and bomb strikes by Russia on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv left three people dead and 22 hurt, while a Ukrainian drone attack in the Moscow region wounded two people, officials from both countries said separately on Saturday. Russian forces used high-precision long-range weapons and drones to hit designated military targets in Ukraine overnight, hitting all of them, according to Russia's Defence Ministry. Separately, Ukraine has indefinitely postponed accepting the bodies of its killed soldiers and the exchange of prisoners of war, Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky said. This was counter to an agreement between the two countries at a second round of peace talks in Istanbul on Monday, where they said they would swap more prisoners and return the bodies of 12,000 dead soldiers. The northeastern city of Kharkiv, one of Ukraine's largest, is just a few dozen kilometres (miles) from the Russian border and has been under frequent Russian shelling during more than three years of war triggered by Russia's full-scale invasion. "Kharkiv is currently experiencing the most powerful attack since the start of the full-scale war," Mayor Ihor Terekhov said in a post on Telegram earlier on Saturday. Residential buildings, educational and infrastructure facilities were attacked, he said, and photos showed buildings burnt and reduced partially to rubble, as rescuers carried the wounded away for treatment. Kharkiv regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said there could still be people buried under the rubble after one civilian industrial facility was hit by 40 drones and several bombs. In the Moscow region, two people were injured after a drone attack by Ukraine overnight and on Friday, Governor Andrei Vorobyov said on Telegram, with nine drones shot down. Russia's aviation watchdog said operations had resumed at the Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Zhukovsky airports in the Moscow region after being suspended temporarily for flight safety reasons. The Defence Ministry said that since midnight, air defence units had intercepted and destroyed 36 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory, including the Moscow region. Ukraine's air forces also shot down a Russian Su-35 fighter jet on Saturday morning, its military said without providing further details. Russian forces have not yet commented on the matter while Reuters could not independently verify the report. A Ukrainian drone attack deep inside Russian territory last weekend likely damaged around 10% of Russia's strategic bomber fleet and hit some of the aircraft as they were being prepared for strikes on Ukraine, a senior German military official said in a YouTube podcast set for broadcast later on Saturday.
