‘Superman' soars to top of N.American box office
LOS ANGELES : 'Superman' the latest big-budget action film featuring the iconic DC superhero, powered to the top of the North American box office in its debut weekend with US$122 million in ticket sales, industry estimates showed Sunday.
The Warner Bros and DC Studios film – directed by James Gunn – stars up-and-comer David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, and 'The Marvelous Mrs Maisel' star Rachel Brosnahan as his perennial love interest Lois Lane.
'This is an outstanding domestic opening for the 7th episode in a superhero story that's been filmed for over 75 years,' said analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.
'Mr Gunn chose not to rely on big stars. The storytelling and filmmaking are doing the work here.'
'Jurassic World: Rebirth' – the latest instalment in the blockbuster dinosaur saga – slipped to second place in its second week of release at US$40 million in the United States and Canada, Exhibitor Relations said.
The Universal film, starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali, takes viewers to an abandoned island research facility for the original Jurassic Park theme park, where secrets – and genetically mutated dinosaurs – are lurking.
'F1: The Movie,' the Apple and Warner Bros flick starring Brad Pitt as a washed-up Formula One driver who gets one last shot at redemption, took third place at US$13 million.
'How to Train Your Dragon,' Universal and DreamWorks Animation's live-action reboot of the popular 2010 film, came in at fourth place with US$7.8 million.
'It's summertime and the big pictures are loud and visually dazzling: 'Superman,' 'Jurassic,' 'F1,' and 'How to Train Your Dragon',' Gross said.
'Audiences want to be transported and taken away, and they're getting what they want.'
Disney/Pixar Animation's latest original film 'Elio,' the story of a young boy who is mistaken by aliens as an intergalactic ambassador for Earth, finished up the top five with US$3.9 million.

Unreleased Beyonce tracks, tour plans stolen in Atlanta car break-in
WASHINGTON, July 15 — Computer drives containing unreleased music by US superstar Beyonce Knowles and plans related to her concerts were stolen last week in Atlanta, police said Monday, with a suspect still at large. The items were stolen from a rental car used by Knowles's choreographer and a dancer on July 8, two days before the pop icon kicked off the Atlanta leg of her Cowboy Carter tour, a police incident report said. Choreographer Christopher Grant, 37, told police that he returned to the car to find its rear-window smashed and their luggage stolen. Inside were multiple jump drives that 'contained water marked music, some un-released music, footage plans for the show, and past and future set list (sic),' the report said. Also missing were an Apple MacBook, headphones and several items of luxury clothing. Police investigated an area where the MacBook and headphones had pinged their location, but the report did not mention any items being recovered. Atlanta Police said in an online statement that a warrant had been issued for an unnamed suspect's arrest, but that the suspect remained at large. Knowles ends her four-night stint in Atlanta on Monday and then wraps up the Cowboy Carter tour in late July in Las Vegas. The tour kicked off in April after the global superstar took home her first 'Album of the Year' Grammy for the country-themed album. — AFP

Back to Hogwarts: New Harry Potter TV series in the works, set to premiere in 2027
NEW YORK, July 15 — Filming has begun on a Harry Potter TV series that will debut in 2027, bringing the Hollywood hit to the small screen for the first time. Adapted from the wildly popular books, which have also yielded blockbuster films and stage shows, the latest outing for the boy who lived is being filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, Britain, the studio said Monday. While no exact release date has been confirmed, the show will be available on the HBO Max streaming platform. The franchise sees the eponymous Potter plucked from non-magical obscurity and thrust into a wizarding world in which he and his close friends Ron and Hermione battle against the forces of darkness. With the mega-selling books' author JK Rowling among its executive producers, the show is envisaged as 'a decade-long series' featuring a new cast from the films. Potter will be played by Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton will star as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will take on the role of Ron Weasley. Established stars will appear alongside them, with John Lithgow playing headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Rowling has faced accusations of transphobia in recent years for placing an emphasis on biological sex over gender identity in comments about trans women. She denies the accusation. — AFP

Justin Bieber releases first new album in 4 years
In a move that surprised and delighted fans, Justin Bieber released his seventh album, 'Swag', today. (EPA Images pic) MONTREAL : Canadian superstar Justin Bieber released his seventh album, 'Swag', today just hours after sharing a sneak peek of it on social media. The 21-track LP was released in a surprise drop and sees the singer reflect on his experiences as a husband and father, following online speculation around his marriage to wife Hailey Bieber. It comes after the 31-year-old began to post teasers on Instagram last night as mysterious billboards were put up in locations around the world, with the new album described as 'some of his most personal music yet'. In May this year, Hailey, daughter of US actor Stephen Baldwin, told Vogue that postpartum life had been 'very difficult' describing constant internet rumours as a 'crazy life to live'. She said giving birth to their son Jack Blues Bieber last August was one of the 'hardest things' she has ever done after going through an 18-hour labour. The couple has been married since 2018. Track titles on the new record include 'Therapy Session', 'Dadz Love', and 'Devotion'. The project marks the return of the 31-year-old singer more than three years after his last single, 'Honest', a duet with Don Toliver. His previous album, 'Justice,' was released in 2021. Bieber has collaborated with US rappers Gunna, Lil B, and Cash Cobain, among others, on this seventh album. He posted a video on his Instagram account yesterday showing the track list for 'Swag' on a large screen in Times Square in New York City. Posters also appeared this week in Reykjavik, Iceland, where US media said Bieber finalised the album in April. Bieber's comeback follows a period marked by the singer's withdrawal from media. His fans, known as 'Beliebers', had been hoping for a new album for several months. In 2022, Bieber was forced to cancel the remainder of his world tour – 82 of 131 scheduled concerts – after revealing he suffered from Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a neurological disorder that partially paralysed his face. The hashtag #SWAGOUTNOW was among the top global trends on X a few hours after the album's release, underscoring fans' excitement. Bieber rose to prominence in 2010 at just 15 years old with the global hit 'Baby', becoming a teen pop star before turning to R&B.
