Snooker-Higgins leads launch of independent players association

CNA3 days ago
Four-time world snooker champion John Higgins has been named Director and Chairman of the newly-formed Professional Snooker Players Association (PSPA), the independent players' body said on Wednesday, as it seeks a stronger voice in the sport.
Among those on the players' board are Judd Trump, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Selby, while Ronnie O'Sullivan, Ding Junhui and Xiao Guodong have signed up as members, the PSPA added.
"The PSPA has been founded at this time because players currently do not believe they have a large enough voice in the commercial direction of the sport and that they feel the governance of snooker, as a whole, should factor in more of the views of the players," PSPA said in a media release.
The association says it wants to have a collaborative relationship with snooker's governing bodies, including the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA), World Snooker and the existing WPBSA Players Board.
"Our sport deserves a strong, independent players' association that stands for fairness, transparency, and progress," Higgins said.
"We seek to work closely with the WPBSA, World Snooker, and the WPBSA Players Board to ensure that players benefit from a full suite of support mechanisms ... while also maintaining true independence when it comes to commercial negotiations and agreements."

Slot says Liverpool title favourites due to last season's triumph, not spending spree

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said it is completely normal for his side to be viewed as favourites to retain their Premier League crown, citing last campaign's success rather than their close-season transfer activity. Liverpool, who won the Premier League last season to secure a record-equalling 20th English title, have bolstered their squad with the arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and others. The Merseyside club, however, have also had Trent Alexander-Arnold leave for Real Madrid, Luis Diaz move to Bayern Munich and Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, while their Portuguese forward Diogo Jota died in a car crash last month. "It's completely normal that we are one of the favourites, because we won it last season," Slot told reporters ahead of Sunday's FA Community Shield showdown against Crystal Palace. "And we brought in good players. Like all the other teams did, by the way. This is what makes this league so nice." Liverpool had only signed forward Federico Chiesa from Italian side Juventus in the close-season window last year. "Every team in the Premier League is spending money. So if we are only favourites because we've spent a bit, I would see that as weird because we've lost a lot as well. But that we are favourites because we won it last season and we played so well, that's clear," Slot said. "And the ambitions haven't changed, because the ambition of this club is always to compete for every trophy."

Rodri unlikely to feature heavily in opening league games after 'big injury', says Guardiola

Midfielder Rodri is recovering from a "big injury" sustained during the Club World Cup, likely limiting the Ballon d'Or winner's playing time in the early stages of the new Premier League season, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said. Guardiola did not disclose the details of the injury but said the 29-year-old Spain international picked up the problem during their 4-3 loss against Saudi side Al-Hilal in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup in July. British media reported Rodri has suffered a groin injury. Rodri only made return to competitive action in May after eight months out of action due to a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. "Rodri is getting better but he had a big injury in the last game against Al-Hilal," Guardiola told reporters ahead of Saturday's friendly match against Italian side Palermo. "He has trained better in the last few days. Hopefully after the international break (in September), he will be really fit. "Hopefully in these (first three Premier League) games, he can play some minutes, but what is important is that he doesn't have pain because we don't want Rodri coming back injured. We will try desperately to avoid that. "He has been training the last two sessions with us and that's good." City, who finished third last season, begin their Premier League campaign away against Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 16.

Rybakina's former coach Vukov cleared to return from WTA ban

Elena Rybakina's former coach, Stefano Vukov, is eligible to receive credentials at WTA tournaments again, following the lifting of his provisional suspension by the women's tennis governing body. Rybakina ended her five-year partnership with Vukov last August, a few days before the U.S. Open, before she appointed Novak Djokovic's former mentor Goran Ivanisevic for the 2025 season in what turned out to be a short and fruitless spell. The WTA confirmed in January this year it had provisionally suspended Vukov due to a potential breach of its code of conduct, pending the outcome of an investigation. But former Wimbledon champion Rybakina rehired him to her team while she was working with Ivanisevic, sparking concern from the tennis fraternity. "The WTA is fully committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for all athletes and other participants, as set out in our WTA code of conduct and safeguarding code," the tour said. "Any sanctions issued following a breach of these safeguarding rules are carefully considered and are subject to appeal before an independent tribunal. "While case details remain confidential, we can confirm that Vukov is eligible to receive credentials at WTA events." The WTA has not said who raised the complaint against Vukov. Vukov, who guided Rybakina to the title at the All England Club in 2022, denies any wrongdoing and told The Athletic he had "never abused anyone" after the outlet first reported about the provisional suspension. World number 10 Rybakina of Kazakhstan has maintained Vukov did not mistreat her and previously said she was not happy with coaches and commentators talking about the situation.
