Aizawl: Newly built railway tunnels along the Bairabi-Sairang section in Mizoram have been decorated with vibrant murals showcasing Mizo culture.
This comes soon after the successful safety inspection by the commissioner of railway safety, Northeast Frontier Circle, Sumeet Singhal, on June 10, followed by a speed trial run.
The tunnel walls showcase depictions of Mizo heritage like traditional dance, attire, farming scenes, and the legendary warrior spirit — each mural reflecting the community's bond with nature and its rich cultural tapestry.
The Bairabi-Sairang railway line will connect Aizawl to India's national rail network for the first time, ushering in faster access to trade, tourism, and services. For Mizoram, the project signals a transformative leap in connectivity and opportunity.
According to the ministry of railways, the project is over 94.5% complete in physical terms and 97% complete financially. Built at a revised cost of Rs 5,021.45 crore, the railway navigated daunting engineering challenges through some of the country's most rugged terrain.
Now that commissioner of railway safety clearance is in place, the ministry is preparing for the inauguration. For the people of Mizoram, this railway is more than infrastructure — it is a symbol of inclusion, movement, and long-awaited recognition. In a land once separated by hills, steel tracks now promise unity.

If train passengers are found carrying luggage above the allowed weight or have bulky luggage, they will incur extra charges, the report said. Indian Railways luggage charges To begin with, the project is being implemented at major railway stations within the NCR zone, such as Prayagraj Junction, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, and Etawah. Baggage allowances differ based on the class of travel. Passengers in AC first class can carry up to 70kg, those in AC two-tier can bring up to 50kg. AC three-tier and sleeper class passengers are allowed 40kg. General class passengers have a limit of 35kg. Bags that are too large and block space on board may incur penalties, regardless of their weight, the TOI report said. According to the TOI report, the proposal also includes introducing premium single-brand stores at Indian Railways' renovated stations. These shops will offer items like clothing, footwear, electronics, and travel accessories with an aim to enhance passenger convenience, increase railway revenue, and give stations a modern, airport-like atmosphere, according to a railways official. "Once completed, Prayagraj Junction is set to become a model for station redevelopment, with Kanpur and Gwalior among those expected to follow in its footsteps," stated Shukla. FASTag Annual Pass Crosses 5 Lakh Registrations In Four Days
The newly launched FASTag annual pass has crossed five lakh user registrations across the country in four days, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has said. Tamil Nadu led the largest number of annual passes purchased over the last four days, followed by Karnataka and Haryana, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement. The maximum transactions through FASTag Annual Pass at the toll plazas were recorded in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. As of 7:00 pm on the first day of implementation on August 15, around 1.4 lakh users had purchased and activated the yearly pass, with approximately 1.39 lakh transactions registered at toll plazas, stated NHAI. In addition to this, the Rajmargyatra app, the official platform to purchase and activate the FASTag annual pass, has become the top-ranking government app on Google Play Store within four days of launch. The Rajmargyatra app is ranked 23rd on the Google Play Store overall and second in the Travel category, with over 15 lakh downloads and a 4.5-star rating. According to NHAI, around 20,000 to 25,000 people use the Rajmargyatra app at the same time. People who bought the annual FASTag pass get a message when they cross a toll plaza, the ministry said. The pass will allow up to 200 toll crossings or a year-long validity, whichever comes first. The cost of the pass is Rs 3,000, and when the validity or the toll limit expires, users can recharge it like any other prepaid card. Any non-commercial vehicle having a valid FASTag can use the pass, activated within two hours of a one-time charge payment made via the Rajmargyatra App or the NHAI website. The annual pass can be used at around 1,150 toll plazas across the country on national highways and expressways.
