KUALA LUMPUR - The latest Harimau Malaya heritage player, Gabriel Palmero, turned to YouTube to memorise the national anthem Negaraku ahead of his international debut against Cape Verde in a Tier 1 international match here last night.

"I tried. I watched YouTube and practised a lot to sing the anthem,' he told reporters after the friendly, which saw Malaysia hold world number 72 Cape Verde to a 1-1 draw at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras.
The match saw Paulo Josue get off the bench to score an equaliser in the 79th minute and deny Cape Verde victory after Sidny Lopes Cabral had given them an early eighth-minute lead.
Palmero, who played for about 80 minutes before being substituted, impressed on the right side and came close to scoring himself after his long-range strike hit the post in just the seventh minute.
The Spanish CD Tenerife B player said he had no issues adapting to his new teammates and that helped him perform well in the game.
"My English isn't perfect but I try to speak and communicate. Football is a universal language, so it's easy to connect with my teammates on the pitch,' he said.
Malaysia will face Cape Verde a second time in a friendly played behind closed doors at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (June 3).
The friendlies against Cape Verde are part of Malaysia's preparations for the crucial games against Vietnam in their second Group F match of the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers at the National Stadium on June 10.
Vietnam and Malaysia jointly top the group with three points each after winning their opening matches. - BERNAMA

England favourites at Women's Rugby World Cup

LONDON: Tournament hosts England head into the Women's Rugby World Cup as strong favourites but are under huge pressure to end more than 20 years of disappointment in the sport's showpiece event. The Red Roses have lost only once in their past 58 matches – a defeat by New Zealand in the Covid-delayed 2022 World Cup final. England, however, have finished runners-up in five of the last six World Cup finals to New Zealand, with the 2014 edition providing their most recent global 15-a-side title. In a bid to help them take the final step to global glory, they appointed New Zealand's John Mitchell as their coach in 2023. The problems facing the England team are similar to the ones Mitchell encountered as coach of the men's All Blacks when he was unable to steer them to World Cup triumph at the 2003 edition. "He'll tell you straight if you're getting something wrong and he wants the best for you," England full-back Ellie Kildunne told AFP in an interview. That England nearly blew a 31-7 lead against France in the final match of their seventh successive Six Nations title-winning campaign in April before edging home 43-42 may have been a blessing in disguise. New Zealand's Black Ferns will look to dash English hopes once again, with Portia Woodman-Wickliffe looking to go out on a high in what promises to be the 34-year-old wing's last major tournament. Already both a two-time World Cup-winner and twice an Olympic Sevens gold medallist, most recently at last year's Paris Games, Woodman-Wickliffe told AFP: "This World Cup was never on my agenda, I never really planned to go to it. "But I thought I'm still enjoying XVs, why not give this a crack. If I don't make it fine, it's cool. But if I do make it, then it will be one last ride." Canada, who recently held New Zealand, remain the biggest threat to the Black Ferns and the Red Roses, in a tournament featuring an expanded 16 teams, with the top two in each of the four pools qualifying for the quarter-finals. Ireland, who failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, have been drawn in the same pool as New Zealand – a team they beat in last year's WXV tournament, introduced to raise the overall standard of the women's game, in a shock upset. But for officials this World Cup is also about growing the game in all aspects, on and off the field. England open the event against the United States in Sunderland on Friday, with the visitors boasting a breakout social media star in Ilona Maher. The 29-year-old American has attracted over eight million followers, not only through her sporting exploits but also for her promotion of body positivity. Even before the first whistle has been blown, this Women's World Cup has set records, with Brazil the first South American side to feature in the tournament's 34-year history. Meanwhile, organisers said on Tuesday they expected the Sept 27 final at Twickenham to feature a sell-out crowd of over 80,000 – a record for any women's rugby match. The existing record for a women's 15-a-side fixture is 58,498, set as England clinched the 2023 Six Nations Grand Slam by beating France 38-33 at Twickenham, with 66,000 attending the opening day of the women's Rugby Sevens at last year's Paris Olympics. Officials also announced that more than 375,000 tickets have been sold across all 32 matches at this World Cup. "We're ready to break records in attendances, viewership and engagement," tournament director Sarah Massey said during Tuesday's launch event at Twickenham. "This is going to be the biggest global celebration of women's rugby that we have ever seen." And for the first time there will be three women head coaches in Gaelle Mignot (France), Jo Yapp (Australia) and Lesley McKenzie (Japan) at a Women's Rugby World Cup. But while England are fully professional, many of their rivals are still only semi-professional or even amateur, with the BBC reporting more than half of Scotland's squad fear being left without a professional deal after the World Cup. "There is no doubt that we will have teams at a different stage of their professional development and that will reflect in some of the scorelines," said World Rugby Chief of Women's Rugby, Sally Horrox, at Tuesday's launch.

Facundo clarifies his Harimau Malaya status

KUALA LUMPUR: National team defender Facundo Garces has clarified his status as a heritage player for Malaysia. The Argentine-born Garces was reported as saying that one of his "great grandparents" was from Malaysia. Garces, however, later clarified that his statement in a recent interview with Spanish portal, El Correo was misreported as he had said "grandparents", not "great grandparents". Fifa only recognises heritage players with links to their grandparents. The Alaves FC player declared his pride in being a Malaysian citizen, as he has Malaysian blood because of his grandparent. "It was just a transcription error (El Correo interview). I am Malaysian from my grandparents roots and I'm honoured to play for my country," he said in an Instagram post. In June, Argentine media outlet reported that Garces, who previously played for Club Atletico Colon in Argentina before joining Alaves in Spain, has a Malaysian grandmother. "For Facundo Garces, who once played with Colon, it is understood his connection to Malaysia is through his grandmother," reported Garces starred in Malaysia's 4-0 win over Vietnam in an Asian Cup qualifier at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 10.

Mbappe lifts Real Madrid past Osasuna in La Liga opener

The France striker, last season's European Golden Shoe winner, scored early in the second half after he was fouled in the area by Osasuna defender Juan Cruz. 20 Aug 2025 09:01am Real Madrid's French forward #10 Kylian Mbappe (R) misses a goal opportunity during the Spanish league football match between Real Madrid CF and CA Osasuna at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid on August 19, 2025. (Photo by Javier SORIANO / AFP) It was enough to seal the points in Alonso's first game in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Madrid now unbeaten in their opening fixture of a league campaign since 2008. "You can see that Kylian wants to do even more after this first year where he did great things," said Alonso. Mbappe finished as La Liga's top scorer with 31 goals in his first season in Spain, and is now wearing the number 10 shirt vacated by Luka Modric after the Croatian left for AC Milan last month. "I don't know if it's linked to the new number or not, or simply to his desire to win, but he wants to improve individual and collective performance and inspire his team-mates," added Alonso. "You can see his desire every day. Today he created those decisive moments that enable us to win matches." Madrid had a shortened pre-season after their run to the Club World Cup semi-finals in July, but Alonso has been adamant that would not be used as an excuse after their request for the Osasuna match to be postponed to a later date was rejected. "To start on the right foot is key in La Liga. We know we weren't well prepared," Madrid defender Dani Carvajal told DAZN. "But we basically didn't suffer and it was a complete display." Spain international Carvajal came off the bench for his first league appearance since October after a long-term knee injury, replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold in the second half. New faces in Madrid Alexander-Arnold made his La Liga debut after his move from Liverpool, with former Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen and left-back Alvaro Carreras other summer arrivals included in the starting line-up. Madrid though were without England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who is expected to be sidelined until October as he recovers from a operation to solve a recurrent shoulder issue. Madrid are looking to turn the page on a disappointing end to the Carlo Ancelotti era after relinquishing both their domestic and European crowns last season. Alonso's side had to show patience against an Osasuna team that finished ninth last term, with the hosts largely restricted to long-range efforts from centre-backs Huijsen and Eder Militao in the first half. Osasuna goalkeeper Sergio Herrera was equal to both, while Mbappe failed to connect cleanly after being picked out by Vinicius Junior before he curled another shot wide as Madrid struggled to break down their opponents. But Mbappe grabbed the only goal six minutes after half-time after he went down following a clumsy challenge by Cruz as he tried to cut past the defender. Mbappe duly got up and running for the new campaign as he sent Herrera the wrong way from the spot. Alonso handed 18-year-old Argentine winger Franco Mastantuono his debut midway through the second half as Madrid controlled the game and seldom looked troubled. Ante Budimir headed over in a rare opportunity for Osasuna and Mastantuono was denied late on by Herrera. Osasuna finished the match with 10 men with Abel Bretones sent off in stoppage time for throwing an arm to block the run of Gonzalo Garcia. - AFP
