India's Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement delayed, BCCI gives official update on WhatsApp group

India's Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement has been delayed due to the inclement weather conditions in Mumbai. India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and chairman of the men's selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, were set to jointly address a press conference at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai to unveil India's squad for the Asia Cup 2025 at 1:30 PM IST on Tuesday (August 19). India's Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement delayed, BCCI gives official update on WhatsApp group(PTI) However, barely a couple of hours before the event, a BCCI media manager dropped a text in its official WhatsApp group (at 11:02 am to be exact), to announce the delay in the proceedings. 'Kindly note that the first press conference is expected to be delayed owing to weather disruptions,' read the text. Hindustan Times has reliably learnt that the extent of the delay is indefinite and there is a remote possibility of the press conference being shifted to another date. The men's Asia Cup squad was not the only big announcement set to take place at the BCCI headquarters on Tuesday. The India Women's squad for the ODI World Cup was also scheduled to be announced in a press conference at 3:30 PM. That is likely to be delayed further. Why Ajit Agarkar and Suryakumar's PC to announce India's Asia Cup 2025 squad was delayed The Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Mumbai on Tuesday, prompting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to declare closure for all government, semi-government, and BMC offices in Mumbai. The decision came amid relentless rains lashing the city and its suburbs, triggering waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and rising concern over public safety. 'Considering the red alert for very heavy rainfall in Mumbai city and suburbs, all government, semi-government, and BMC offices (excluding essential services) will remain closed today,' the BMC said in its official statement. The civic body also urged private establishments to allow employees to work from home and avoid unnecessary travel. Heavy Rains and IMD Red Alert Mumbai has been placed under a red alert by the IMD, with the weather department forecasting "very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall" in the city and surrounding suburbs on Tuesday. Gusty winds ranging between 45-55 kmph are also expected.

The stage is set for the official unveiling of India's 15-member squad for the 2025 ACC Men's Asia Cup, with a press conference scheduled today at 1:30 PM IST today (August 19) at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Ajit Agarkar, chairman of the BCCI Senior Men's Selection Committee, will jointly address the media to announce the team that will represent India in the continental tournament, scheduled to be held in the UAE from September 9 to 28. Suryakumar Yadav yet to attain full fitness ahead of Asia Cup (PTI) Key Talking Point: Shubman Gill Conundrum The biggest question ahead of the announcement revolves around the inclusion of Shubman Gill — one of India's brightest batting talents but someone who hasn't organically fit into the current high-performing T20I setup. His potential inclusion is likely to come at the expense of an in-form player like Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, or even Rinku Singh — all of whom have played key roles during the last T20I season under Suryakumar's captaincy. India's Asia Cup Squad Composition: What Could It Look Like? Here is a probable outline of India's Asia Cup 2025 squad, based on current form, selection trends, and strategic needs: Top Order (3-4 spots): Abhishek Sharma Shubman Gill / Yashasvi Jaiswal (only one likely to make the XI) Sanju Samson (also acts as keeper option) Tilak Varma Middle Order and Finishers: Suryakumar Yadav (Captain) Rinku Singh / Shivam Dube Jitesh Sharma / Dhruv Jurel (for the second keeper slot) All-rounders: Hardik Pandya Shivam Dube Axar Patel Washington Sundar (Backup) Pacers: Jasprit Bumrah Arshdeep Singh Hardik Pandya (as third seamer in XI) Harshit Rana / Avesh Khan/ Prasidh Krishna (reserve pacer slot) Note: Mohammed Siraj are likely to be rested with focus on Tests. Spinners: Kuldeep Yadav Varun Chakravarthy Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravi Bishnoi may miss out despite good domestic form. Captaincy and Leadership Group Captain: Suryakumar Yadav Likely Vice-Captain: Gill or Axar Patel Gill was previously vice-captain but Axar stepped in during his absence. The selectors will need to manage the optics of this decision carefully. Injuries and Absentees Rishabh Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy are recovering from injuries and ruled out of contention. KL Rahul has not been considered for T20Is post-World Cup and is unlikely to return for this format. Selection Philosophy: Stability vs Star Power The Indian selectors are walking a tightrope — balancing continuity and form with the need to accommodate long-term investments like Gill. Under Gautam Gambhir's coaching tenure, there's a growing emphasis on form over brand value, which means even established players are not guaranteed spots.

Ex-Pakistan pacer urges Babar, Rizwan to follow Kohli's example after Asia Cup snub: 'Consider retiring…'

Batting stars Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were overlooked by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for next month's Asia Cup in the UAE, with fellow seniors such as Shaheen Afridi and Fakhar Zaman getting included, and former pacer Tanveer Ahmed offered the duo a radical solution. Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam have been overlooked for the upcoming Asia Cup despite being Pakistan's leading run-scorers in the T20I format. PTI Pakistan batting stars Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan have been advised to follow Virat Kohli's footsteps and announce their retirement after getting overlooked by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the upcoming Asia Cup in the UAE. The only difference is that while Kohli remains active in One-Day Internationals, ex-Pakistan pacer Tanveer Ahmed has advised Babar and Rizwan to retire from international cricket altogether in order to preserve their 'respect', his comment causing quite the stir on social media. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Unlike Babar and Rizwan, senior pacer Shaheen Afridi has been included along with senior pacers Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali as well as veteran opener Fakhar Zaman in the 17-man squad led by Salman Agha. 'Meri Babar Azam aur Rizwan say request hai ager ap log yeh samajhtey hain ap logon ke izzat nahi ha tou retirement ley lo international cricket say humarey samne virat kohli ke examples hain. @babarazam258, @iMRizwanPak izzat apney hath main ha (My request to Babar Azam and Rizwan is that if you feel your respect is not intact, then consider retiring from international cricket. We have examples of Virat Kohli in front of us. Babar and Rizwan, respect is in your hands),' Tanveer tweeted. How Babar and Rizwan fell out of favour in the shortest format Babar and Rizwan had starred in Pakistan's historic victory over India in Dubai, where the arch-rivals will square off on 14 September, in the 2021 T20 World Cup. It was the first time Pakistan had ever defeat India in a World Cup match – either ODI or T20. The duo had also played a key role in guiding the Men in Green to the T20 World Cup final the very next year, with Pakistan falling short in the final hurdle against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Their T20 stocks, however, nosedived after Pakistan's dismal campaign in last year's T20 World Cup in the United States and the Caribbean, where they crashed out in the first round following defeats against co-hosts USA as well as India. Kohli had retired from T20Is along with Rohit Sharma after the two superstars propelled India to victory in last year's T20 World Cup. The two would also announce their retirement from the Test format within a week of one another in May, nearly half-a-year after a their underwhelming run in the five-match Test series against Australia Down Under. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD While Rohit's retirement was largely along expected lines, it's was Kohli's Test retirement that took the cricketing world by surprise, leading to an outpouring of tributes.
