‘Land beside Jinjang MRT station not suitable for carpark'

The Star07-05-2025

StarMetro report on May 3.
THE vacant land beside the Jinjang MRT station in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, is not suitable for building parking facilities due to height and land size restrictions, says Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp).
In a statement to StarMetro, MRT Corp, however, said it was exploring locations within the station's vicinity to build more parking facilities.
'We recognise the growing demand for parking facilities in the area.
'We are committed to improving commuter convenience and supporting the long-term operational needs of the MRT network,' it said, adding that park-and-ride facilities were also available at nearby MRT stations for commuters' usage.
'At the Jinjang MRT station, 239 car parking bays are available for public use,' said MRT Corp.
'Commuters also have access to nearby park-and-ride facilities at the Metro Prima MRT station (212 bays), Sri Damansara Timur MRT station (173 bays), Kentonmen MRT station (165 bays) and Kampung Batu MRT station (313 bays),' it said.
All these stations are part of the Putrajaya MRT line, according to MRT Corp's website.
In a StarMetro article titled 'Empty land next to Jinjang MRT should be turned into carpark' published on May 3, community activist Yee Poh Ping called for a carpark to be built on the land beside the Jinjang MRT station to address the inadequate capacity of existing park-and-ride facilities.
Located in a railway protection zone, the land (Lot 55080) had been rented out to a private company to build a temporary showroom for used cars.
The decision was supported by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), which found that the proposed development would not jeopardise the safety of the existing train structure and operations.
Every development project that falls under a railway protection zone requires APAD's approval, as prescribed in the Railways (Railway Protection Zone) Regulations 1998.

Desecration risks in rezoning Vivekananda Ashram

The status of Vivekananda Ashram in Brickfields has changed from mixed development to main commercial in successive Kuala Lumpur local plans. — Filepic A NATIONAL heritage group has raised concerns over the rezoning of the century-old Vivekananda Ashram in Brickfields under the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 (KLLP 2040). Badan Warisan Malaysia (BWM) president Lim Wei-Ling said the ashram building was 'at real risk of being desecrated'. 'Gazetted in 2016, it is an important heritage building of historical and cultural significance, together with the site on which it sits in Brickfields. 'The rezoning and classification also pose an alarming risk of not having a sufficient buffer zone around the building. 'While we agree on the need for development, this should happen within reason and land around heritage sites should not be prone to overdevelopment,' she said in a media statement. Lim was responding to a StarMetro report on May 26, 'Vivekananda Ashram at a crossroads' where stakeholders highlighted an inconsistency in the revised draft of the KLLP 2040. While the ashram is classified as a Category 1 Heritage Building under the National Heritage Act 2005, the 0.4ha site is now zoned as 'main commercial', raising concerns that it could be overshadowed by future development. In the earlier draft of KLLP 2020, the land surrounding the ashram was designated for facilities, utilities and infrastructure within a heritage zone. By the time the KLLP 2020 plan was gazetted, the zoning had changed to 'mixed development'. Lim also expressed support for stronger provisions in the KLLP 2040 to protect heritage sites from development. 'Sites like Vivekananda Ashram, which are surrounded by skyscrapers, are in jeopardy of being lost and demolished within Kuala Lumpur. 'These small and meaningful heritage sites are part of the diverse historical references that define Kuala Lumpur. 'They should be celebrated and protected as part of Warisan Kuala Lumpur, an initiative launched recently by our Prime Minister,' said Lim. She stressed that authorities should offer greater protection to heritage buildings and sites in support of that vision. When contacted, Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said in the case of the ashram, 'if a proposal is submitted and follows the local plan, we can look into the sensitive design around the site.' 'There are mechanisms in place to protect the heritage building,' she said. On concerns that stakeholder input was not considered in the amended KLLP 2040, Maimunah said that when she assumed office in August, the local plan study was already nearing completion after public participation. 'The committee presented me with the outcomes and proposed amendments in October. 'Proposals that align with the plan will be approved while those that do not, will be rejected,' she said.

Underground cables delay Pandan Indah bridge works

View of ongoing work for the vehicular bridges connecting Jalan Pandan Mewah and Jalan Pandan Utama.— LOW BOON TAT/The Star A TRAFFIC dispersal project involving the construction of two vehicular bridges at Pandan Indah in Ampang, Selangor is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) said the project completion date was extended following the discovery of underground utility and telecommunication cables. Upgrading and construction works include the building of the bridges over Sungai Kerayong, piling and traffic light upgrades. MPAJ deputy president Hasrolnizam Shaari said the project that started in August last year was 50% completed. 'There were many utility pipes and cables that needed to be relocated before the construction could proceed, which resulted in a three-month extension. Hasrolnizam says traffic management measures are being implemented at the site. 'However, there are no full road closures in the area. 'To ensure safety and smooth progress of construction, traffic management measures including possible diversions, are being implemented at the site.' Hasrolnizam said MPAJ, in collaboration with the state government, aimed to reduce congestion at the busy intersection. StarMetro previously reported that the current traffic level of service (LOS) was grade F, but was expected to improve to grade D once the RM9.3mil project was completed. LOS refers to traffic flow designated by letter grades from A (free flow) to F (near gridlock). StarMetro's report on July 17, 2024. Grade D reflects 'steady traffic at high density'. A 100m stretch of Jalan Pandan Utama will have a lane share system during the construction period. Alternative routes include Jalan Pandan Muhibbah, Jalan Bunga Mawar 4 and Jalan Pandan Mewah.

Singapore transport operator SMRT hit with S$3m fine after major East-West Line breakdown last Sept

SINGAPORE, June 3 — Singapore's public transport operator SMRT will be fined S$3 million (S$1 = RM3.30) following a six-day MRT service disruption on the East-West Line (EWL) in September last year, according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA). LTA said that in determining the penalty amount, the agency took into account that SMRT had borne the cost of repairs and had provided free bridging buses and regular bus services, as well as shuttle train services at the affected stations. 'It also provided free travel to passengers alighting at Jurong East and Buona Vista stations for the six days of disruption. The total costs amounted to over S$10 million,' it said in a statement on Tuesday. The penalty will be channelled to the Public Transport Fund to help lower-income families with their public transport expenses. LTA said its investigation into the September 25 to 30, 2024 service disruption concluded that the likely cause was degraded grease in the axle box, which subsequently led to overheating and failure. This conclusion was supported by the presence and location of burnt rubber and metal pieces from the chevron springs found along the path of the affected train. However, the agency noted that it was not possible to establish a definitive root cause. On September 25, 2024, a dislodged axle box caused the wheels of the third car of a Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) train to fall off the track, damaging the tracks between Dover station and Ulu Pandan Depot. The incident resulted in MRT service disruption between Jurong East and Buona Vista stations. Repair works were carried out over six days, and full services resumed on Oct 1, 2024. — Bernama
