‘Putin won't mess around with me': Trump ahead of meeting in Alaska; US president says Russia, Ukraine ‘will make peace'

Time of India21 hours ago
US President
Donald Trump
on Thursday said that his Russian counterpart,
Vladimir Putin
, won't 'mess around" with him ahead of a summit between the two world leaders in Alaska.
The US president will be holding face-to-face talks with Putin at a US military base on Friday to negotiate a potential ceasefire in Ukraine.
During a press conference at the White House, Trump acknowledged that Putin is interested in gaining full territorial control of Ukraine but insists that won't happen with him as US president.
I think President Putin would like to see a deal. I think if I weren't President, he would take over all of Ukraine. It's a a war that should never have happened. In my opinion, if I weren't President, he would much rather take off, take over all of Ukraine.
But I am President, he is not going to mess around with me.
He also proposed that European leaders could be invited to participate in a second meeting, which would include Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Trump told Fox News Radio that the main aim of tomorrow's meeting is to set up talks between Putin and the Ukrainian president, adding that he has three locations in mind for such a meeting.
The US President, who is preparing to meet his Russian counterpart for the first time since 2018, expressed confidence that both leaders 'will make peace'.
Friday's talks between the presidents will include a one-on-one meeting, a bilateral lunch with both delegations and a press conference, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
Earlier on Thursday, Putin praised Trump's 'sincere efforts' towards ending the war in Ukraine, telling Kremlin officials the US is making 'quite energetic and sincere efforts to stop the fighting'. The comments followed UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer hosting Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Downing Street for talks, greeting the Ukrainian president with a warm hug outside his residence.

'Snipers in Anchorage': Commentator faces flak amid Putin assassination row ahead of Trump meeting

Commentator and social media influencer Brian Krassenstein faced flak on Friday after posting about having 'snipers in Anchorage', where Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump are meeting. Several users alleged that Krassenstein was calling for the Russian president's assassination. Just before the summit, Krassenstein posted a video of the two leaders shaking hands on the tarmac. 'They should have had snipers in Anchorage, Alaska, ready to take him out as soon as he shrugged,' he posted on X, platform formerly known as Twitter. Read More: 'Stop Killing Civilians?' The Kremlin boss shrugged and gestured that he couldn't hear the question. Social media users, including pro-Trump accounts, were quick to slam Krassenstein. 'Brian Krassenstein is now calling to ass*ssinate Putin on American soil,' one person tweeted. 'You really didn't suggest that we kill Putin?' another person asked. Krassenstein quickly replied: 'I did.' He did not stop there. 'Correction. We should poison him instead. Make it less obvious,' he wrote in a follow-up tweet. 'In my opinion the US government should have taken care of him,' he further said. Brian and Ed Krassenstein are American twin brothers who are writers, entrepreneurs, and social media personalities. 'This will will be remembered as one of the most disgraceful moments in U.S. presidential history. In Anchorage, Alaska, Putin brushes off a question about killing civilians. I like presidents who don't roll out the red carpet for war criminals,' Ed posted.

Historic handshake, warm smiles and a ride together in ‘The Beast': What happened when Trump met Putin

The summit meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin is underway at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. Wearing a dark suit, white shirt and red tie, US President Donald Trump descended the stairs from Air Force One at 11:08am local time, and he walked along a red carpet. He stopped and, as Russian President Vladimir Putin approached, applauded him before offering a handshake and a tap on the arm. Putin appeared to make a joke, prompting smiles from both leaders. They walked together toward a platform marked 'Alaska 2025,'where again the two leaders exchanged a handshake, posed for photographs; but as reporters shouted questions at Putin about a ceasefire and civilian casualties, the Russian president shrugged as if indicating he couldn't hear them. While it resembles an elongated Cadillac XT6, its chassis comes from a Chevrolet Kodiak truck. Security features remain classified, but a report by NBC, suggests the vehicle has night-vision, tear gas launchers, electrified door handles, 3-inch-thick windows, and 8-inch armor plating—making it one of the most secure vehicles in the world.

Russia-US negotiations in Alaska likely to last 6-7 hrs: Kremlin

Moscow, Aug 15 (UNI) The high-level negotiations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump in Alaska could take at least six to seven hours, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov today. "In general, one can imagine that, of course, at least six to seven hours will be spent on this," Peskov told the Channel One broadcaster, as per state media TASS. The two leaders will have a one-on-one conversation, which will be held with the participation of aides, followed by the delegations from both sides joining the talks, Peskov said, commenting on the summit. The Russian side expects the meeting to end productively, Peskov added. Trump expressed similar sentiments over the talks, calling Putin 'a smart guy.' Russia had earlier praised Trump for his 'sincere' efforts in ending the war with Ukraine, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov earlier stating that much was done during the visits of US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow. While the summit will primarily revolve around the war between the two countries, it will also take on an economic form, with Russia's presidential envoy for economic cooperation, Kirill Dmitriev also being part of the delegation. Also the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, the official had told RIA Novosti that the talks will also be focused on the normalisation of ties between both countries, including on the issue of sanctions and restoring communication between Moscow and Washington.
