Watch as Texas Tech softball gambles, steals home to score first run vs UCLA in WCWS
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Texas Tech softball team scored its first run of its Women's College World Series game against UCLA in an unusual way Saturday night at Devon Park.
NiJaree Canady laced a double into right field to put runners at second and third with one out in the top of the fifth. Lauren Allred got tagged out trying for home, but the Red Raiders ultimately found a way to score.

Victoria Valdez took a ball against UCLA pitcher Taylor Tinsley. As UCLA Alexis Ramirez was throwing the ball back to Tinsley in the circle, Makayla Garcia — in as the pinch runner for Canady at third — slid by Valdez and Ramirez to score the run.
UCLA challenged the play, arguing Garcia may have left third base early, but the call was upheld to give Texas Tech the 1-0 lead.
Even Texas Tech legend Patrick Mahomes liked the play.

The Justice Department's move came two days after a trans girl won championships in two girls' events at the California state track and field meet, and less than a week after President Trump decried her inclusion in the competition, saying that he would cut federal funding to the state if it let her participate. At the meet, held over two days in Clovis, Calif., the trans girl, AB Hernandez, won the girls' high jump and triple jump, and also finished second in the long jump for Jurupa Valley High School, in what is arguably the most competitive high school meet in the nation. Coach Patty Gasso's Sooners (52-9) were down to their last strike in the top of the seventh inning when Abigale Dayton summoned a bit of magic, hitting a tying two-run homer against Red Raiders ace NiJaree Canady. It was just her third longball of the season. But the Red Raiders (53-12) responded quickly in the bottom half. Mihyia Davis singled with one out and Hailey Toney followed with a double. Allred hit a flyball to right field and Sydney Barker's throw to the plate was wide, allowing Davis to score easily. Texas Tech, in its first trip to the WCWS, will play Texas in the best-of-three championship series starting Wednesday. The Longhorns reached the finals for the third time in the past four years. They lost to Oklahoma in 2022 and 2024. Oklahoma had won nine straight elimination games. Canady lost the shutout but got the win. She is the two-time reigning National Fastpitch Coaches Association Pitcher of the Year and was the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year last season.
