Wall collapse incident at Simhachalam temple: Opposition parties criticise NDA government for ‘negligence and apathy'

The Hindu30-04-2025

Members of the Opposition parties slammed the NDA government alleging negligence and apathy as the reason behind the wall collapse which led to the death of seven persons, including three women, atop Simhachalam in Visakhapatnam, during the Chandanotsavam festival.
Former Minister and YSR Congress Party Anakapalli district president Gudivada Amarnath, along with Visakhapatnam district YSRCP president K.K. Raju and other leaders, met the victim family members near the KGH and expressed their grief. Later, speaking to the media, Mr Amarnath said that in general Chandanotsavam receives a turnout of around two lakh devotees every year. But despite knowing the facts, the government had failed to make basic arrangements. He alleged that the wall which was constructed a few days ago, seems to be poorly constructed.
'I met a victim who is undergoing treatment at the VIMS. He informed that during the rain and gale, the wall swung like a flexi and fell all of a sudden. There was no illumination in the queue line route. Fortunately, he survived with fractures,' Mr. Amarnath said.
Mr. Amarnath questioned what was the need for the authorities to organise the queue line along the under-construction area, which had no illumination at all. He has also demanded that the government provide an ex gratia of ₹1 crore to the kin of the deceased and also provide them a government job.
Construction quality
CPI(M) corporator, B Ganga Rao and CPI(M) leader R.K.S.V. Kumar also consoled the kin of the victims at the KGH. Speaking to the media, Mr. Ganga Rao alleged negligence from the authorities as the reason for the human loss. He questioned the quality of the wall which collapsed due to rain and the corruption behind it. The government should take strict action against the persons responsible for the incident, he said.
'During January, there was a stampede at Tirumala during Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam tickets issue, in which many devotees died. Now, here during Chandanotsavam, seven devotees were killed. It seems like the government has not learnt any lessons from the Tirupati stampede incident,' he said.

Sanjay Jha-led delegation briefs EAM Jaishankar on Operation Sindoor outreach

The all-party parliamentary delegation led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha on Thursday met External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar and briefed him on the support received during their recent five-nation diplomatic outreach on the Operation Sindoor. The delegation which met EAM Jaishankar included BJP MPs Aparajita Sarangi, Brij Lal, Hemang Joshi, and Pradan Baruah, Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, CPI(M)'s Rajya Sabha member John Brittas, senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid and former diplomat Mohan Kumar. During their visits to Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, the delegation presented dossiers and evidence on Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism relating to Pahalgam terror attack and also informed them about India's military action under Operation Sindoor. Speaking to IANS after the meeting, JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha said, "There was a very positive atmosphere in Indonesia. We received support, and their statement was in favour of India. Malaysia, however, appeared a little neutral. We noticed every country had its own approach. In many places, we got a positive response; in some, it was neutral, and in a few, there were questions. But this was the aim of our tour -- to understand and share perspectives." "We shared with them our firm stand against terrorism," he added. Responding to criticism from sections of the Opposition regarding alleged losses suffered during Operation Sindoor, Jha asserted, "The strongest message we sent globally was that India stands united. When I introduced the delegation members as being from Kerala, Assam, Bengal, Gujarat, and from different parties, it sent a strong signal that the entire nation and political spectrum was speaking in one voice. If one or two voices dissent, they should reflect on whether they are aligned with the country or somewhere else." BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi said, "We received an invitation from the EAM's office, and today we all had a productive discussion. Each member shared detailed experiences from the countries we visited. The Minister was deeply engaged and asked many questions. We explained everything in depth. Now the MEA will take a call on the further steps." Referring to the criticism over timing of diplomatic outreach, Sarangi said, "The delegation completed its work with seriousness and gave its briefing. Even today, during the meeting with the EAM, leaders like Salman Khurshid and CPI(M)'s John Brittas were present, and there was great camaraderie and unity. That's what stood out the most."

Modi says NDA govt devoted to building self reliant India, social welfare

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday described his government as compassionate and devoted to the welfare of the poor as it prepares to launch a mass outreach to highlight its achievements in 11 years in office. Modi said on X that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has over the past decade taken path-breaking steps to uplift several people from the clutches of poverty, focussing on empowerment, infrastructure and inclusion. The NDA remains committed to building an inclusive and self-reliant India, where every citizen has the opportunity to live with dignity, he said, adding that all its key schemes have transformed the lives of the poor. He said, "Initiatives like PM Awas Yojana, PM Ujjwala Yojana, Jan Dhan Yojana and Ayushman Bharat have enhanced access to housing, clean cooking fuel, banking and healthcare. The push for DBT, digital inclusion and rural infrastructure has ensured transparency and faster delivery of benefits till the last mile." It is due to this that over 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty, he said. Modi is set to complete the first year of his third straight term in office on June 9, marking an uninterrupted 11 years in power. Charing a meeting of his Council of Ministers on Wednesday, he had asked ministries to set high goals and work in an overdrive to achieve them, telling his colleagues to highlight the major achievements of the government in their outreach to the masses.
