80% domestic passengers expected to use Digi Yatra app by 2028: CEO
'Maybe, language is a barrier and that will be addressed as we make our app compatible with various languages,' he said. Currently, the app is available only in English. However, five additional languages — Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Marathi and Kannada — will be introduced by July.
'Right now, we are testing them. By July, users can choose either of the six languages,' Khadakbhavi said. Over time, the app aims to support all 22 constitutionally recognised Indian languages.
The app, which allows passengers to verify their identity using facial recognition instead of physical documents, currently accepts only Aadhaar for enrolment. That is set to change.
'You can't enrol on Digi Yatra using your driving licence right now. We are conducting user acceptance tests (UAT) for it. We are adding that. In a month, you will be able to enrol not just on the basis of an Aadhaar card, but also on your driving licence,' he elaborated.
Digi Yatra is currently operational at 24 airports, with plans to expand to 41 airports by March 2026, he said. 'Currently, 30–35 per cent of all domestic passengers per day are using the Digi Yatra app. We aim to take this number to 70–80 per cent by 2028,' he said.
The foundation is also planning a pilot project for international use of the app. 'We were targeting the annual general meeting of the International Air Transport Association, which took place between June 1 and June 3 in Delhi. We wanted to do at least one PoC (proof of concept) by that time. However, we were not able to do it,' Khadakbhavi said.
The pilot would involve e-passport-based credential verification for foreign expatriates who travel frequently within India. 'The pilot project will be for expats who work out of India, and travel within India. They can verify themselves using e-passports and then use Digi Yatra for domestic travel,' he said. If successful, it could pave the way for the use of Digi Yatra on international flights as well.
'Discussions are underway with multiple countries,' he added.
'We are holding primary discussions in countries of various regions — the West Asia is one, Europe and North America are others. As yet, nothing has been put on paper... If we find a country ready then this pilot study can happen in the next six months,' he said.
Looking beyond airports, the foundation is also eyeing an integration of Digi Yatra with hotel check-in processes. 'I am expecting that in the next year, we could have them on our app. I am expecting, but it may or may not,' he said.
However, this would require policy-level interventions. 'Today, a hotel can accept four or five IDs including Aadhaar card and PAN card as valid proofs. We want Digi Yatra to be added to that list. Once that happens at the policy level, we are sorted,' Khadakbhavi said.
'If Digi Yatra can be used for such a sensitive thing as air travel where the perception of threat is higher, then why can't it be used at any place, like checking into a hotel, where your identity needs to be validated?' he asked. 'Verifying your credentials through our app will be easier, less time-consuming, and more privacy-preserving than giving your ID card to the reception staff, who then take a photo or print a copy of that,' he said.

Auto sector seeks full CAFE exemption for N1 light commercial vehicles
SIAM cites affordability, weak sales, minimal emissions and regulatory overload as reasons to exempt N1 segment from stricter fuel efficiency rules from April 2027 Deepak Patel Listen to This Article The Indian automobile industry has urged the central government to completely exempt N1 light commercial vehicles (LCVs)—defined as goods-carrying vehicles with a gross vehicle weight not exceeding 3.5 tonnes—from the upcoming Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms set to take effect from April 2027, sources told Business Standard. Union Government comes up with an AI-based app that helps prevent potential financial risks online
The Union Government has come up with an Artificial Intelligence (AI) application to help users prevent potential financial risks online. To create awareness about fraudulent transactions, spam and fraud calls, an innovative feature, Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI), has been developed and successfully tested, according to Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar. In an exclusive interaction with The Hindu at his camp office, near here, Mr. Chandra Sekhar said, 'The FRI AI app will enable us to profile people based on their historical activities and the complaints that have been received by the police, banks and other institutions. There are 500 institutions in our digital intelligence platform. We take all that data and we indicate whether that person is a very high risk for fraud, or high risk, or medium risk for fraud,' said Mr. Chandra Sekhar. The government had already run the FRI pilot project with two financial entities — PhonePe and SBI — where two lakh high-risk transactions had been blocked in two weeks. 'When you initiate a transaction to a potential fraud, this app will alert you with a message — this person is a high likely a fraud — to make sure that you verify before sending money. This AI-embedded app is working with 99% predictability. Now, we are going to deploy this platform in all the financial institutions. And, the security aspect is being reviewed every two weeks,' he added. Sanchar Saathi This apart, a 'Sanchar Saathi' mobile app was built by the Union Government in 20 languages. It was designed to arrest spam calls, identify lost mobiles, and report fraud calls. 'The app is already launched in English language and will be made available in other languages in a couple of weeks,' he said. The government was also focused on developing its own technology for telecommunications, and it had already achieved a significant progress in terms of last mile connectivity. 'Ranging from high-speed cable network to telecom towers every nook and corner, there is gigantic effort by the government in the past three years for a giant leap in communications,' Mr. Chandra Sekhar said. Shearing details, he said there would be revival and rejuvenation of India's national telecommunications company, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), with best standards possible. 'The BSNL has turned around, and we are also working on change of culture. So far, it has only 2G and 3G, we now started launching 4G, as decided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to build indigenous 4G technology,' he said. 'Private companies have been using imported technology for 4G or 5G. As long as you have money, you can purchase and install the technology, that is an easy project. But, at BSNL, we want to use our own 4G, which has started three years ago. It is a collaboration between private Tejas Networks, TCS and C-DOT, which is a Government of India organisation. The C-DOT has written the software, Tejas developed hardware and TCS integrated all of these,' he said. 'The BSNL is the one executing the entire project. So, whatever the private players have done in 30 to 40 years, our people have to do it in two to three years, which is the challenge,' said Mr. Chandra Sekhar. Over 1,00,000 towers of 4G had been installed in the last one year to take the initiative forward. As part of rejuvenation, over ₹600 crore worth new batteries, generators and other equipment was procured. 'For BharatNet, we tendered 16 packages to lay ₹1.4 lakh crores worth cables across India. At least in half of circles, the work has started. The initiative facilitates high-speed Internet and TV at ₹400 per household, and there is ₹10,000 subsidy on the upfront cost,' the Union Minister said.

India's Digital Identity Adoption Surges Amid Rising Trust, AI Integration: Report
New Delhi: As India's digital ecosystem expands at an unprecedented pace, Indian consumers are rapidly embracing new-age identity technologies while balancing convenience with security concerns, a new report said on Wednesday. The data compiled by Okta highlights that more than 30% of Indian users log into ten or more personal online accounts every month -- showcasing the country's accelerating digital footprint. Amid this growth, Indian consumers are also displaying a greater readiness to adopt biometrics and AI-driven services compared to global peers. Despite the growing array of authentication methods, passwords remain the most convenient option for 82% of Indians. However, biometrics are steadily gaining traction, with 55% using fingerprint authentication and 35% relying on Face ID for smoother logins. 'Despite the new options, 82% of Indians still find passwords to be the most convenient way to verify their identity,' the report said. 'More than half of the population (54%) find it convenient to use a government ID like Aadhaar for verification purposes, followed by SMS/voice calls (44%)," it added. Security perceptions remain high for passwords (79%), SMS authentication (74%), and fingerprints. However, risky practices persist -- 1 in 5 Indians reuse the same password across all personal accounts. India's growing trust in digital platforms is also noteworthy. As many as 67% of Indian respondents trust businesses to protect their data, well above the global average of 50%. This trust extends to key sectors -- banks (79%), tech firms (73%), government agencies (70%), and online retailers (69%). However, digital vigilance is rising too, with 81% of Indians expressing concern about identity fraud -- significantly higher than the global average of 63%. The report, based on a global survey of 6,750 consumers (including 750 from India), also found that Indians are more open to engaging with enterprise AI agents. While 65% appreciate the speed and 24/7 support of AI, as many as 76% still prefer human interaction. Interestingly, 64% of Indians are willing to share health data with AI agents, compared to 32% globally, and 49% are comfortable sharing financial data, compared to 27% globally. 'AI is no longer a future concept -- it is embedded in the way we live, work, and connect,' said Shakeel Khan, Regional Vice President and Country Manager, Okta India. Ben Goodman, SVP & GM, Asia Pacific & Japan at Okta, added, 'In Asia Pacific, trust has become the true currency of digital engagement. From logins to AI agents, consumers want experiences that are seamless, secure, and respectful of their data.'
