PMK founder Ramadoss warns of statewide stir if 10.5% quota not implemented for Vanniyars
Speaking to reporters after a meeting of Vanniyar Sangam administrators held at Thailapuram, Ramadoss said, 'If the 10.5% internal quota is not granted, Tamil Nadu will face a protest that could bring the state to a standstill. It is the government's responsibility to prevent such a scenario.'
Ramadoss said, 'This meeting was to strengthen the organisation, discuss principles, and ensure victory in the upcoming elections,' he said.
Responding to questions on party responsibilities, Ramadoss said, 'Some media outlets are spreading false information. Both the party and the sangam are functioning as usual. An official announcement on the protest for the 10.5% quota will be made after discussions with all stakeholders.'

CHENNAI: In an indication that the ruling DMK is ready to face the 2026 Assembly election without gesturing any assurances or action towards fulfilling the demand for 10.5 % reservation for Vanniyars by the PMK, the government has extended the time limit given to the Backward Classes Commission (BCC) by another one year till July 2026 to submit its report on the matter. This is the fifth extension being given to the BCC for examining the demand for internal reservation within the Most Backward Classes (MBCs) and Denotified Communities (DNCs) and submit a report. The previous deadline of July 12, 2025 was extended till July 12, 2026 through a government order on Wednesday. The examination of the demand for internal reservation and submission of a report was added as an additional term of reference (ToR) in January 2023 to the present BCC, which was constituted in November 2022 with a set of six terms of reference. Interestingly, the three-year term of the BCC, headed by Justice V Bharathidasan, retired judge of the Madras High Court, is ending by November. The government is likely to extend its term. When the BCC was tasked with studying the demand for internal reservation in January 2023, it was asked to submit its report in three months. However, the government has since extended the time limit four times over the past 2.5 years, citing that the commission requested extensions due to lack of quantifiable data of all communities included in the MBC and DNC lists.

TN Minister defends rural trade licence fees amid backlash; says AIADMK enforced similar system
CHENNAI: After criticism from several political parties against the licence fees introduced for businesses in rural areas, the AIADMK in particular, Rural Development Minister I Periyasamy on Wednesday clarified that such a provision existed even under the AIADMK rule, albeit under the name 'dangerous and offensive trade licence'. However, amid strong criticisms from parties including PMK, CPM, and TMC (M), the minister also announced the constitution of a new advisory committee, as per CM's orders, based on requests from trade associations on Wednesday. The committee will submit their recommendations on simplifying the licence process. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, during his ongoing tour of the southern districts, accused the ruling DMK of imposing 'hefty fees' for licences for running even small businesses like tea shops and laundry shops in villages and alleged that the fee ranged from Rs 500 to Rs 50,000. Periyasamy clarified that provisions to obtain licence fees for shops existed under Section 159 of the Tamil Nadu Panchayats Act, 1994, and that the licence fees were collected even during the AIADMK's time. He attached a 2018 district gazette notification from Coimbatore, listing the licence fee for various categories of trades. He said, in the absence of proper rules, each village panchayat was collecting exorbitant licence fees based on their own discretion. The state government released a set of rules in July to address this. The rules mainly dealt with introducing an online licencing process and ensuring uniformity in the fee collection. Fees need to be revised only once in three years as per new rules unlike the earlier need for annual revision, the minister said. He said the name of 'dangerous and offensive trade licence' was changed as per recommendations of the Sixth State Finance Commission.

Final alliance to be announced closer to polls, says Palaniswami
AIADMK and BJP are part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), and the BJP is also in alliance with several other parties, said AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami. 'We still have eight more months. Closer to the elections, we will announce the full list of alliance partners,' said told the media in Tiruchi. There is no need to create unnecessary confusion among the public. Let us not blow this out of proportion. The Union government has already taken a clear stand on the matter across India.'
