Harvey Elliott shrugs off painful knee-slide celebration to lead England to U-21 final
BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — Harvey Elliott's knee-slide celebration was brief — and painful.
The Liverpool midfielder scored twice to help England beat the Netherlands 2-1 on Wednesday and advance to the Under-21 European Championship final.
Elliott went into his celebration after opening the scoring in 62nd minute. But instead of sliding, he hit the dry pitch and tumbled forward, leaving a divot behind him.
He told broadcaster Channel 4 after the semifinal that his knee was 'hurting" and added 'hopefully it's nothing too silly.'
'I forgot the pitch was ridiculously dry. It's the price I've got to pay, but it is what it is,' said Elliott, who played on after the close-range strike.
After Noah Ohio had equalized for the Dutch, Elliott netted a left-footed winner in the 86th.

76ers expect injury-riddled center Joel Embiid to return from knee surgery in time for training camp
CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid is on track to return from knee surgery when training camp opens in September. Embiid had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in April following a disastrous injury-plagued season that limited the two-time NBA scoring champion to just 19 games. Team President Daryl Morey talked to Embiid hours ahead of the first-round of the NBA draft on Wednesday night — the 76ers selected Baylor guard VJ Edgecombe with the No. 3 overall pick — and felt encouraged with the All-Star's progress. 'He's very engaged, attacking rehab," Morey said. 'Doing everything he can to be out there. He had a meeting with (the surgeon) this week. All things, to use a NASA term, are nominal. Things are going well and expected and we expect that to continue." The 76ers will get an early jump on training camp this season because they will play preseason games in early October against the New York Knicks in the Abu Dhabi Games. The 76ers expect the 31-year-old Embiid in camp. 'Things are on track to be ready right around there,' Morey said. Embiid had meniscus surgery on Feb. 6, 2024, days after Golden State forward Jonathan Kuminga fell on the leg. The 2023 league MVP returned for the playoffs, though he never fully recovered. He was ruled out ruled out for the season in late February after averaging 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Embiid had been hobbled by injuries all season, and served a three-game suspension for shoving a member of the media. Embiid has played only 58 regular-season games and seven play-in tournament/playoff games since he earned NBA MVP honors in the 2022-23 season. Like Edgecombe, Embiid in 2014 was also the No. 3 overall pick of the draft. Embiid has dealt with multiple injuries since even before he entered the NBA. He suffered a stress fracture in his right foot before he was drafted out of Kansas that cost him two years. From there, it was a bone bruise here, a meniscus tear there. A busted orbital bone. A sprained shoulder. Tendinitis. Torn ligaments. Even Bell's palsy. Embiid conceded he was depressed — and eventually needed therapy — to deal with the effects of his injuries. 'It's kind of hard when you get in those moments where it's kind of hard not to feel bad about yourself, especially when you know who you are and what you can accomplish but it's not the way it is,' Embiid said in December. 'One lesson that I learned is to try and stop feeling bad about myself and just live day by day. Enjoy good people around me, positivity and not focus on the negativity.' ___

Ryan wins for 7th time in 8 decisions, Clemens hits 9th homer and Twins beat Mariners 2-0
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joe Ryan won for the seventh time in eight decisions, Kody Clemens hit his ninth homer and Willi Castro drove in the go-ahead run as the Minnesota Twins beat the Seattle Mariners 2-0 on Wednesday night to stop a five-game losing streak. Ryan (8-3) allowed three hits in six innings, struck out eight and walked none to help Minnesota end a six-game home skid, its longest at Target Field since an eight-game slide from April 27 to May 20, 2016. Ryan has allowed one run or none in nine of 15 starts. Jhoan Duran, reaching 100 mph with three pitches, got three straight outs for his 11th save in 13 chances, combining with Louis Varland and Griffin Jax for hitless relief. Byron Buxton singled in the sixth off George Kirby (1-4), advanced on a groundout and scored on Castro's single. Clemens homered in the seventh off Eduard Bazardo as Minnesota (38-42) won for the second time in 13 games. Kirby allowed one run and three hits in six innings. Seattle (41-38) had won three in a row. Key moment Julio Rodríguez had an infield hit leading off the sixth, but Ryan struck out home run leader Cal Raleigh and got ex-Twin Jorge Polanco to hit into a double play. Fried becomes first 10-game winner as Domínguez and Grisham power Yankees to 7-1 victory over Reds
CINCINNATI (AP) — Max Fried became this season's first 10-game winner, Jasson Domínguez and Trent Grisham had four hits apiece and the New York Yankees defeated the Cincinnati Reds 7-1 on Wednesday night to avoid being swept in the three-game interleague series. Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered for the Yankees (46-34), who remained one game in front of Tampa Bay in the AL East. Elly De La Cruz had two hits for the Reds. Fried (10-2) went seven innings and allowed an unearned run, four hits and seven strikeouts. The left-hander is the third Yankees pitcher since 1962 to be the first in the majors to reach double-digit victories, joining CC Sabathia in 2011 and Tommy John in 1979. Domínguez and Grisham each had two doubles. The four hits were a career high for Domínguez while it was the third time Grisham has had at least four hits in his seven-year career. Chisholm, ejected in the ninth inning of Tuesday night's 5-4 loss in 11 innings after arguing a strike call, bounced back with a two-run, third-inning drive off Brady Singer (7-6). Giancarlo Stanton led off the inning with a single and Chisholm sent Singer's slider 433 feet into the stands in right-center to make it 3-0. Four of Chisholm's 17 homers have come since he returned to the lineup on June 3 after missing 28 games due to a right oblique strain. The Yankees struggled with runners in scoring position throughout the series, but broke through in the second when Grisham lined an RBI single to right with the bases loaded. They were 4 for 22 on Wednesday and 5 for 43 for the series. Key stat Fried is 8-1 with a 0.93 ERA in 10 starts after a Yankees' loss. He has gone at least six innings in all those starts and didn't allow an earned run for the sixth time. Up next Yankees: Return home to host Oakland in a weekend series. RHP Will Warren (4-4, 4.66 ERA) gets the call on Friday. ___
