Coupled with the rise of gastro pubs and microbreweries, Indian drinkers (except those in Karnataka*) have never had it so good.
'Slow sip, long conversations'
For many, beer and summer go hand in hand. But its popularity isn't seasonal. Beer ranks just behind hard liquor as India's most-consumed alcohol. 'Beer suits India's tropical climate – it's refreshing, low in alcohol, and lends itself to long chats or loud parties,' says Pankil Shah, co-owner of a Colaba resto-pub.
'It's casual, easy, and more 'sessionable' than spirits.' Debayan Datta, manager at a nationwide pub chain, agrees, 'Beer fits into every social scene – from house parties to cricket screenings.

Cheers to Brit beers:
Premium UK labels like Boddingtons, Newcastle Brown Ale, Fuller's, Carling, Cobra, John Smith's and Hobgoblin may become more accessible. 'These are maltier, low on hop bitterness and are great for those new to craft beer,' Shah adds.

'We're seeing growing interest in styles like IPAs (Indian Pale Ales) and stouts (like Guinness).' But there needs to be more awareness, felt Gurpreet Singh, owner of an alcohol brand in Bengaluru.
'Consumers buy beers like Corona and Hoegaarden because of Hollywood, Budweiser does well because of its global name. For UK beers to do well, they have to be better known,' Singh said.

Homegrown microbreweries remain a strong draw, especially for younger drinkers.
'Craft beer's low preservatives and competitive pricing keep it popular,' says Sk Samim, GM of a resto-pub chain in the East and Northeast. Between premium imported brands and a blooming homegrown industry of microbreweries, we may be now spoilt for choice as a beer-loving nation.

UK employers report weaker hiring and pay growth in July
Hiring intentions by British businesses fell to their weakest since the Covid-19 pandemic and recruiters said starting pay was rising at the slowest pace in over four years, according to surveys on Monday which add to signs of a weakening jobs market. With the Bank of England watching the jobs market closely, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development said only 57% of private sector employers planned to recruit staff over the next three months, the lowest since the start of 2021 though only slightly down from 58% in the last quarterly survey. The professional body for the human resources sector said higher employer social security charges introduced by finance minister Rachel Reeves and an increased minimum wage were hurting jobs, particularly in hospitality and social care. Planned changes to employment law which are likely to make it harder to sack employees in their first two years in a job were also making businesses more reticent to hire younger, less experienced staff, CIPD economist James Cockett said. Other business surveys have shown similar concerns, as well as broader headwinds from weak domestic demand and residual uncertainty for some exporters over U.S. trade tariffs.

Now, award-winning single malts to debut at all Tasmac outlets
Chennai: Premium Indian liquor lovers in Tamil Nadu will soon find award-winning single malts at all Tasmac outlets. Bengaluru-based Indri-Trini single malt whisky and Amrut Fusion single malt whisky, winners of global "World's Best Whisky" titles in 2023 and 2024, will be available in both elite and regular Tasmac shops in the coming months, sources said. The state govt amended its liquor procurement policy in 2023 to allow sourcing from other states, paving the way for six new liquor varieties, five beer brands, and eight wines to enter the market. Tasmac has fixed 3,500 per carton as the base price for out-of-state supplies to ensure local distilleries and breweries remain competitive. "Though high landed costs initially discouraged out-of-state brands, the untapped premium segment in Tamil Nadu proved attractive," said a source. Royal Ranthambore whisky and Jaisalmer gin from Radico Khaitan were introduced last year, followed by Pernod Ricard's 100 Pipers and Blenders Pride. The latest entrant, Tilaknagar Industries, is supplying Mansion House Ultra French brandy and Courrier Napoleon Green brandy, and may soon bring Imperial Blue whisky, procured from Pernod Ricard, to the state. Tasmac officials said imported liquor suppliers do not provide liquor to the corporation despite the easy licence procedure in place, as the market for premium liquor is just 0.5% of the overall sales volumes. "However, we want to make national brands that are more sought-after in other states and globally available here," said a senior official.
