Kolkata: Bidhannagar Police on Monday introduced a slew of measures to reduce congestion and improve vehicle movement outside the terminal building at the Kolkata airport. While it seemed effective in the morning and the afternoon, officers were sent scurrying back to the drawing board to finetune the measures further after traffic snarls resurfaced during the evening rush hour.
Among the measures that were rolled out on Monday was a new lane demarcation system outside the terminal. Traffic cones and flexible posts with reflective strips were installed along the driveway, covering exit gates 1A/B and 2A/B.
"We started installing the traffic cones from Friday and from this week, the total lane demarcation system is up and running. We are, however, open for feedback from passengers to improve it further," said a senior officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate.

On Monday morning, TOI found cars negotiating the marked lanes as security personnel and traffic police monitored the situation. Cops said more signboards indicating "pick-up" points would be positioned ahead of the entry points, as the posts create a physical barrier to stop vehicles from cutting across lanes.
However, the problems resurfaced in the evening when traffic count shot up. Of the key reasons why the system hit a bump was VIP vehicles that blocked the lane next to the terminal building and led to a snarl.

"When I first came out of the airport, the sight of the lane markers gave a sense of order and discipline that was missing outside the terminal building for years. But soon faults began to appear. As I stood outside gate 2A/B waiting for my driver to pick me up, he said he was stuck behind a queue of vehicles in the first lane and was unable to move out of the queue," said Goutam Chatterjee, a resident of Lake Gardens while waiting for his car.
The system currently has three lanes: two single-file lanes and one double-width lane. A traffic police officer stationed at the airport said they were advising drivers headed for gates 3A/B to use the double lane to avoid blockage in the single lanes. Officers are also requesting VIP vehicle users to avoid parking in the lane closest to the terminal. "These are early days. We expect the system to function better once additional signage is in place," the officer said.
The move had come after Bidhannagar police and Kolkata airport authorities had a meeting earlier this month to embark on a set of joint initiatives eliminate the chaos, clear the logjam, streamline traffic movement, and improve the first impression of travellers landing in the city. Among the measures decided were reopening the 2A/B exit gate.

FASTag mandatory for all vehicles entering Tirumala from August 15

TIRUPATI: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has made FASTag, a Radio frequency identification technology (RFID) based system for e-toll collection in the prepaid digital format, mandatory for all vehicles entering Tirumala via the Alipiri tollgate from Aug 15. The Tirupati trust maintained that the decision was taken to provide better safety standards, prevention of overcrowding and transparent services to the devotees arriving in various vehicles at the Alipiri check point, FASTag will be made mandatory for the vehicles entering Tirumala from August 15 onwards. Clarifying that vehicles without FASTag will no longer be allowed to enter Tirumala from Aug 15, TTD sources added that a FASTag issuance center has also been set up at the Alipiri check point for the convenience of those who do not have FASTag for their vehicles. TTD's vigilance and security wing clarified that the security frisking mechanisms in place at the Alipiri tollgate will remain as they are irrespective of the mode of toll-collection. While there are twin pedestrian routes leading to Tirumala, Alipiri happens to be the only gateway to Tirumala as far as vehicular traffic is concerned. It is at the Alipiri tollgate that the TTD collects two way toll-fees from vehicles plying along the twin ghat roads. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In Ukraine Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. Devotees have welcomed the Tirupati trust's move to facilitate digital payments through the FASTag, which will enable faster collection of the toll-fees without manual intervention, eventually leading to a hassle free passage following the security frisking at the Alipiri tollgate. Mercedes says top-end car portfolio continues to drive growth in volatile mkt

Mercedes-Benz India on Tuesday said its top-end model range continues to drive growth for the automaker amid a volatile business environment. In an interaction with PTI, Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO Santosh Iyer said that the overall domestic luxury car market growth is pegged at around 4-5 per cent year on year. For Mercedes, the top end vehicle and core segments continue to grow while the entry level vertical has de-grown, he noted. Live Events "With eight launches in 2025, our top-end luxury vehicle strategy has been very successful, garnering immense customer response and elevating the desirability of Mercedes-Benz in the market," Iyer said. "So yes, we are not seeing that double-digit kind of growth momentum that we saw in the previous year, but still, flattish to single-digit growth is there," he added. He noted that while there are some headwinds, the industry is also witnessing some tailwinds, which augur well for the growth in the coming quarters. Iyer cited GDP growth projections and record GST collections this year as some of the positive factors. "Obviously, macros are strong and they should not affect the fundamental position. But yeah, it's a volatile market, for sure," he added. The German Luxury carmaker on Tuesday launched AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe priced at Rs at 1.35 crore (ex-showroom, India).

Canadian influencer couple dies in off-roading crash in British Columbia

Source: X An influencer couple from Canada, known for their adventurous off-road travel videos, has died after a tragic accident in the British Columbia Interior. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Stacey Tourout and Matthew Yeomans, creators of the YouTube channel Toyota World Runners with over 200,000 subscribers, were killed on Thursday, August 7, 2025. Kaslo Search and Rescue (SAR) confirmed to CBC that they were called to the crash site at around 7:30 p.m. local time. Rescuers believe the pair lost control of their vehicle while navigating rough terrain in the mountains near Trout Lake, B.C. Just days before the accident, they had shared what would become their final YouTube video, titled "VANCOUVER ISLAND | The Off-Road Version," which showed them camping in remote Canadian wilderness and testing their Toyota trucks on challenging trails. Mark Jennings-Bates, a manager with Kaslo SAR, told CBC: "So it was on a forestry road, somewhere in the mountains, and quite a long ways north in the valley up towards ... the village of Trout Lake [in the West Kootenay region of southeastern B.C.]. Our teams were able to get to them efficiently. It's a long journey, but they got there efficiently. So that was very, very helpful. And of course that means that the helicopter pilot could also fly straight to the destination with confidence that he was going to find them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo " Jennings-Bates said one of the victims had no vital signs when crews arrived, while the other was airlifted to the hospital but later died. The cause of the crash is not confirmed, though he suspected 'a loss of control on rough terrain' as a possible factor. Tributes from family and fans Tourout's mother, Colleen, posted a heartfelt message on Facebook alongside a photograph of the couple in front of snow-covered mountains: "With unimaginable heartache, the families of Matthew Peter Yeomans and Stacey Tourout would like to advise that we lost them both tragically succumbing to injuries in an offroad accident on Aug 7, 2025 in the beautiful mountains of British Columbia that they loved so much. Please keep us and them in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate this devastating end to an amazing Love Story. They are together forever as we knew they would always be." Per an old post dated April 12, 2023, Stacey Tourout and Matthew Yeomans met each other 'because of an old Toyota.' They said their agenda was to drive the Cruiser Chinook truck they built in 100 days 'around the world, starting with the entire western hemisphere: The Pan American Highway.' According to Yeomans' Facebook profile, the couple got engaged in April 2024, sharing a video of the proposal with followers. Beyond YouTube, they also had a strong Instagram presence with nearly 74,000 followers. A description on their Toyota World Runners YouTube channel reads: "Matthew and Stacey built the world's first Land Cruiser Chinook in 100 days. Now set off on their journey to drive the Pan American and beyond, this is their story about the adventure, the personal growth, and choosing to LIVE life and create a legacy community of people who are seekers of the unknown. We are documenting our build, the trip plan, and hope to leave you with wisdom and inspiration for why we travel and how you can find fulfillment doing the same, in your own way. " Their final Instagram post, shared six days before the tragedy, featured photos from Vancouver Island and was captioned: "Really just soaking up all of these Vancouver island summer juices. Our first summer in a few years where we get to experience the seasons change and the joy the sun brings us soggy rainforest dogs as we come out of hiding."
