The Derby is also known and was trademarked in 2009 as the Run for the Roses® because the victorious horse and jockey proceed to the winner's circle where the animal is festooned with a blanket of 554 red flowers, while the rider receives a 60-rose bouquet.

The post-race tradition began much more humbly in the late 1800s with far less flora, but just as much fawning. The first Derby went off in 1875 when Aristides beat 14 other horses to the finish line in 2:37.75 after a gruelling mile and a half.

'The Canadian Derby is a big deal, but the Kentucky Derby is the holy grail,' said Tim Rycroft, one of Alberta's top thoroughbred trainers, with more than 800 wins. 'It's just a famous race that everyone gears up for basically all winter down there in the states. It's not the most expensive race out there or anything, it's kind of the start of the race season and it seems to just have that appeal to it.

Rodgers, Heyward, Watt and Metcalf will sit out the Steelers' preseason finale

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Aaron Rodgers' first official snaps with the Pittsburgh Steelers will have to wait until Week 1. Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that the four-time MVP, along with All-Pro defensive tackle Cam Heyward, star outside linebacker T.J. Watt and wide receiver DK Metcalf, will not play against Carolina in Pittsburgh's preseason finale on Thursday. Everyone else on the roster that's healthy, including defensive backs Jalen Ramsey and Darius Slay, running back Jaylen Warren and tight end Pat Freiermuth, could see the field in Carolina. All were part of a sizeable group that watched Pittsburgh's first two exhibitions from the sideline. Yet with more than two weeks to prepare for the opener on the road at the New York Jets, Tomlin sees an opportunity for the majority of his team to knock off some rust before the games start counting. The 41-year-old Rodgers has said throughout training camp that he'd be more than willing to take the field. Tomlin said he's seen enough progress over the last month that there's no need to put Rodgers in harm's way. 'I'm comfortable with what I'm seeing out here, obviously,' Tomlin said. 'If I weren't, I'd be playing him.' Asked Tuesday what he wants to see coming out of Carolina, Rodgers repeated the word 'health' multiple times. The decision not to have Rodgers take the field for at least a series during the preseason is an unusual step for Tomlin, who is entering his 19th season with the Steelers. Longtime Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger always saw some level of game action in August, and each of the Week 1 starters since Roethlisberger's January 2022 retirement — Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett and Justin Fields — all made at least a token appearance, if not more, in the preseason. Like that trio, Rodgers is in his first year in Pittsburgh. Unlike that trio, Rodgers is the league's oldest active player and still less than 24 months removed from an Achilles tendon injury that cut short his initial season with the Jets in 2023 after just four snaps. There's a chance Pittsburgh's new-look secondary could play together for the first time against the Panthers. The Steelers added cornerbacks Ramsey and Slay — who have a combined 13 Pro Bowl appearances and two Super Bowl rings between them — in the offseason to join a group that includes Joey Porter Jr. and DeShaun Elliott. The group has been dominant at times during training camp, but save for a joint scrimmage with Tampa Bay last week, has yet to see the field together against an opposing team. That could change on Thursday, though Tomlin indicated plans may change if the Panthers decide to sit quarterback Bryce Young and running back Chuba Hubbard, among others. 'There's a collective component, a communication component, a coordination component to what they do, and if they get the opportunity to get some snaps against some capable people in the stadium, we'd appreciate it,' Tomlin said. While Heyward will not play, he did return to practice on Tuesday for the first time in nearly two weeks. The 35-year-old four-time All-Pro has been in attendance but not participating on the field as he seeks a bump in pay following a bounce-back season in which he collected eight sacks following an injury-marred 2023. Asked if Heyward's familiar No. 97 being on the field signals a shift, Tomlin deferred to Heyward. Heyward went to the trainer's room after practice and did not speak to reporters. ___ AP NFL:

Texas QB Manning says NFL plans not taking shape yet despite grandpa's prediction of 2026 in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — There's so much speculation about Texas quarterback Arch Manning's future, in the media and even within his own family, that it can be hard for him to keep up. On Tuesday, Manning insisted he's not plotting out how long he'll stay at Texas or when he'll enter the NFL draft, despite his grandfather's recent prediction to Texas Monthly magazine that he'll be with the Longhorns through the 2026 season. 'I don't know where he got that from,' Arch Manning said in his first meeting with reporters since SEC media days in mid-July. 'He texted me to apologize about that. I'm really just taking it day by day right now.' Arch Manning has been careful while talking about his future as he leads the No. 1 Longhorns as the full-time starter after playing behind Quinn Ewers the past two seasons. Manning enters this season as the early favorite for the Heisman Trophy, has endorsement deals worth millions and comes from the most famous quarterbacking family in football. Grandfather Archie played in the NFL and uncles Peyton and Eli combined for four Super Bowl victories. Add that together and Arch Manning is shouldering the biggest spotlight of any player in the country. Texas opens the season Aug. 30 at No. 3 Ohio State after losing to the Buckeyes in the national playoff semifinals last season. Manning is also very close to his grandfather, despite any confusion about whether he's destined for one or two seasons as the Texas starter before heading to the NFL. Manning noted Tuesday how Archie is always giving him advice on how to avoid taking big hits to prolong his career. 'Those hits add up,' Arch Manning said. 'My grandfather, he's hobbling around these days. He ends every call with 'get down or get out of bounds.'' ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. Nose tackle Khalen Saunders feels almost instantaneous joy following trade to Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Khalen Saunders was playing Fortnite with friends at home Sunday evening when New Orleans Saints coach Kellen Moore called to deliver the trade news. 'Where to?' Saunders replied. Jacksonville. 'The (team) we just played?' Saunders added. 'It was a surprise.' The postgame deal sent Saunders, a two-time Super Bowl champion nose tackle with Kansas City, to the Jaguars in exchange for backup center Luke Fortner. The trade had been in the works for days, long before the teams played to a 17-all tie in the Superdome on Sunday. Jacksonville had been looking to strengthen its defensive front while New Orleans was in the market for offensive line depth. Now both players are getting a fresh start with a much better chance of making an opening-day roster. 'It was almost instantaneous the joy that came in,' Saunders said. 'It's fast moving, but I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.' Saunders was one of three defensive additions for the Jaguars on Tuesday. Defensive tackles Arik Armstead (back) and Maason Smith (calf) practiced with the team for the first time since training camp opened. 'Both guys have done everything they can in order to get on the grass,' Jaguars coach Liam Coen said. 'To see them out there is a great sign. … Both guys have done nothing but worked their tails off to get back. Pleased about that progress for sure.' Armstead, Smith and Saunders are expected to play in Jacksonville's preseason finale at Miami on Saturday, although it likely hinges on how much work they get during a joint practice with the Dolphins on Thursday. Coen already has a good feeling about what to expect from the 324-pound run-stopper, having watched Saunders twice last season while he was offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay. 'A guy that … I've got respect for as a vet that's played a lot of meaningful down in this league, has won Super Bowls, has been on teams that know how to win and there's no question he can help up in the middle there at times,' Coen said. 'He's hard to double-team and move in there at times and also has some ability to kind of redirect and has some initial (quickness), so I do believe he'll help add some meaningful competition and depth in that room.' Saunders started 27 games for the Saints over the last two seasons after a four-year stint in Kansas City. He became expendable after the Saints switched to a 3-4 defense under coordinator Brandon Staley and signed free agent Davon Godchaux from New England. Fortner, a third-round draft pick from Kentucky in 2022, started 34 games for Jacksonville during his first two seasons. But he was benched in favor of veteran Mitch Morse last year and was considered a long shot to make Jacksonville's roster behind Robert Hainsey and rookie Jonah Monheim. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Saunders, a third-round draft pick in 2019, has 181 tackles and 6 1/2 sacks in 68 career games. He's expected to slot in as a backup to DaVon Hamilton on Jacksonville's depth chart. Saunders arrived in town midday Monday, meet his new teammates and then spent several hours with coaches learning the defense. 'He brings a lot of experience, a lot of good depth and we're lucky to have him,' defensive end Josh Hines-Allen said. ___ AP NFL:
