Tencent's Weixin App Launches DeepSeek Search Testing
In a beta test, Weixin is testing access to DeepSeek for searches, Tencent said in an email statement to Reuters.
The move by the Chinese tech giant is notable as integrating DeepSeek brings in an external AI platform, while tech firms compete fiercely in developing the most advanced AI.
Weixin uses Tencent's proprietary Hunyuan-Large language model to enrich its AI search, a spokesperson said.
Tencent is exploring the integration of multiple products with DeepSeek, including Tencent Cloud AI Code Assistant and Tencent Yuanbao, another AI assistant app, said a person with knowledge of the matter.
DeepSeek is being tested by Weixin, which serves domestic users, not its sister app WeChat, which targets overseas users. The two had a combined 1.38 billion users at the end of September.
DeepSeek last month upended the AI world, launching a free AI assistant that it says uses less data at a fraction of the cost of incumbent services. It quickly overtook US rival ChatGPT in downloads from Apple's App Store.
Among Chinese companies seeking to capitalize on DeepSeek's potential breakthrough, automaker Great Wall Motor and leading telecoms providers are integrating the AI model released by DeepSeek into their offerings.

Kaspersky has detected and blocked over 142 million phishing link clicks globally Q2 2025, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia saw a 22.5% increase from Q1 in phishing attempts. Currently phishing is going through a shift driven by sophisticated AI-powered deception techniques and innovative evasion methods. Cybercriminals are exploiting deepfakes, voice cloning and trusted platforms like Telegram and Google Translate to steal sensitive data, including biometrics, electronic signatures and handwritten signatures, posing unprecedented risks to individuals and businesses. AI-powered tactics transforming phishing attacks AI has elevated phishing into a highly personalized threat. Large language models enable attackers to craft convincing emails, messages and websites that mimic legitimate sources, eliminating grammatical errors that once exposed scams. AI-driven bots on social media and messaging apps impersonate real users, engaging victims in prolonged conversations to build trust. These bots often fuel romantic or investment scams, luring victims into fake opportunities with AI-generated audio messages or deepfake videos. For instance, automated calls mimicking bank security teams use AI-generated voices to trick users into sharing two-factor authentication (2FA) codes, enabling account access or fraudulent transactions. Additionally, AI-powered tools analyze public data from social media or corporate websites to launch targeted attacks, such as HR-themed emails or fake calls referencing personal details. Employing new tactics to bypass detection Phishers are deploying sophisticated methods to gain trust, exploiting legitimate services to prolong their campaigns. For instance, Telegram's Telegraph platform, a tool to publish long texts, is used to host phishing content. Google Translate's page translation feature generates links that look like and are used by attackers to bypass security solutions' filters. By using CAPTCHA, these fraudulent pages deflect anti-phishing algorithms, as the presence of CAPTCHA is often associated with trusted platforms, lowering the likelihood of detection. A switch in hunting: from logins and passwords to biometrics and signatures The focus has shifted from passwords to immutable data. Attackers target biometric data through fraudulent sites that request smartphone camera access under pretexts like account verification, capturing facial or other biometric identifiers that cannot be changed. These are used for unauthorized access to sensitive accounts or sold on the dark web. Similarly, electronic and handwritten signatures, critical for legal and financial transactions, are stolen via phishing campaigns impersonating platforms like DocuSign or prompting users to upload signatures to fraudulent sites, posing significant reputational and financial risks to businesses. 'The convergence of AI and evasive tactics has turned phishing into a near-native mimic of legitimate communication, challenging even the most vigilant users. Attackers are no longer satisfied with stealing passwords — they're targeting biometric data, electronic and handwritten signatures, potentially creating devastating, long-term consequences. By exploiting trusted platforms like Telegram and Google Translate, and co-opting tools like CAPTCHA, attackers are outpacing traditional defenses. Users must stay increasingly skeptical and proactive to avoid falling victim,' said Olga Altukhova, security expert at Kaspersky. Detailed information is available in a report on Earlier in 2025 Kaspersky detected a sophisticated targeted phishing campaign which was dubbed Operation ForumTroll, as attackers sent personalized phishing emails inviting recipients to the 'Primakov Readings' forum. These lures targeted media outlets, educational institutions and government organizations in Russia. After clicking on the link in the email, no additional action was needed to compromise their systems: the exploit leveraged a previously unknown vulnerability in the latest version of Google Chrome. The malicious links were extremely short-lived to evade detection and in most cases ultimately redirected to the legitimate website for 'Primakov Readings' once the exploit was taken down. To be protected from phishing, Kaspersky recommends: • Verify unsolicited messages, calls, or links, even if they appear legitimate. Never share 2FA codes. • Scrutinize videos for unnatural movements or overly generous offers, which may indicate deepfakes. • Deny camera access requests from unverified sites and avoid uploading signatures to unknown platforms. • Limit sharing sensitive details online, such as document photos or sensitive work information. • Use Kaspersky Next (in corporate environments) or Kaspersky Premium (for individual use) to block phishing attempts.

Putin, US Envoy Witkoff Meet in Moscow ahead of Ukraine Ceasefire Deadline
The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, hosted the US Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff, in the Kremlin on Wednesday as the deadline set by US President, Donald Trump, for Moscow to agree a ceasefire in Ukraine looms. Putin-Witkoff Meeting According to Russian news agency TASS, the meeting lasted for around 3 hours, with the presence of Russian Presidential Aide, Yury Ushakov, who described the meeting as 'useful and constructive.' Earlier on Wednesday, Witkoff arrived in Moscow, where he was received by the Russian Direct Investment Fund CEO and special presidential envoy for economic cooperation, Kirill Dmitriev. The two officials also had a walk in Zaryadye Park in downtown Moscow. Deadline Looming Witkoff's visit to Russia marks the fifth since the start of the year. It came two days ahead of the deadline set by the US President, Donald Trump, for Russia to end the war in Ukraine. Trump threatened Moscow with new economic sanctions if it did not reach a ceasefire Ukraine by August 8. He also threatened heavy tariffs on countries that buy Russian exports, particularly India and China – two of the largest Russian oil buyers. Putin's Options Putin seemed to be unmoved by Trump's threats, insisting that his demands to end the war in Ukraine remained unchanged and signaling that the war's momentum was in Russia's favor. It was not clear what he might propose to Witkoff to avert Trump's threats. One of the options could be proposing a moratorium on air strikes by Russia and Ukraine, Reuters reported citing Bloomberg and independent Russian news outlet The Bell. Although this would not meet the US' demand of a full and immediate ceasefire, it might offer some relief to both sides. Anti-Submarine Drill In a separate development, Russia and China conducted an anti-submarine exercise in the Sea of Japan – days after Trump said he had moved nuclear submarines closer to Russia. The exercise was part of a broader series of joint naval drills. On Wednesday, Russia's Defense Ministry said that the Russian and Chinese navies have practiced hunting and destroying an enemy submarine. 'As a result of effective joint actions, the 'enemy' submarine was promptly detected and mock-destroyed,' it said in a statement. Trump's decision to reposition nuclear submarines followed an online row with Russia's former president and the deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev. Saudi Arabia Rolls Out Robotaxi Service in Riyadh
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia's capital, has deployed a Robotaxi pilot fleet, developed by Chinese tech firm WeRide in collaboration with Uber and local partner AiDriver. WeRide has recently obtained Saudi Arabia's first Robotaxi autonomous driving permit, which allows it to operate self-driving vehicles business in the Kingdom and deploy Robotaxis across Saudi regions. Robotaxi in Riyadh This permit makes WeRide the only tech firm in the world that has autonomous driving permits in six countries: Saudi Arabia, China, the UAE, Singapore, France, and the US. On July 23, 2025, the Chinese company, in cooperation with Uber and AiDrive, launched its pilot operations across key locations in Riyadh, including at King Khalid International Airport, major highways and selected city center hubs. The Robotaxi service will have designated pick-up and drop-off stations to streamline travel to and from the airport. It will boost transport efficiency, sustainability, and safety across Riyadh, easing traffic congestion in the Saudi capital. The Robotaxi is set to expand into full-scale commercial service by the end of 2025. WeRide is the first company to get a permit for its Robotaxi in Saudi Arabia, after completing a rigorous approval process, including testing, assessments, and technology validation, to meet the highest safety and performance standards set by the Kingdom's Transport General Authority (TGA). Major Milestone The tech company received the permit during an official ceremony, with the participation of the Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and Chairman of the TGA, Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, and CFO and Head of International at WeRide, Jennifer Li, alongside other Saudi senior officials. On this occasion, Li said: 'This permit marks a major step in our global expansion, enabling us to scale Robotaxi services and unlock new commercial opportunities in Saudi Arabia.' Meanwhile, the Saudi Transport Minister hailed the initiative. 'The pilot launch of autonomous taxi services reflects the kingdom's forward-looking vision and strategic investment in future mobility,' he said. 'This step reinforces our commitment to fostering innovation, enabling cutting-edge technologies, and creating a globally competitive, efficient, and sustainable transport sector that supports economic growth and enhances the quality of life for all,' Al-Jasser added. WeRide Services in Saudi Arabia In addition to Robotaxi, WeRide, which entered Saudi Arabia in May 2025, has been testing and operating Robobus service in key locations, such as King Fahad Medical City, Aramco residential communities, AlUla, and the Ritz-Carlton in Riyadh. It is also operating Robosweeper S1 at King Fahad Medical City, Riyadh Second Health Cluster, marking the first paid autonomous sanitation project in both Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East.
