No top 8 for Chiefs, Stellies seal CAF return as relegation cloud hangs over SuperSport
Kaizer Chiefs ended a disappointing season with a 0-0 draw against Polokwane City, finishing ninth and missing out on the MTN8 for a second year, despite winning the Nedbank Cup. Stellenbosch FC sealed third place and a CAF Confederation Cup spot after a goalless draw with Cape Town City in the Western Cape derby. The relegation battle remains tense with Cape Town City and SuperSport United will find out their fate next week. Kaizer Chiefs' turbulent season ended in disappointment once more, as a goalless draw with Polokwane City at the FNB Stadium confirmed their absence from the MTN8 for a second consecutive year. The stalemate leaves Amakhosi with 32 points from 28 matches, ninth on the Betway Premiership table – though that could still worsen with a few fixtures left to wrap up the season. It's a grim conclusion for a club of Chiefs' stature, whose tally of just 25 goals scored and 32 conceded speaks volumes about their lack of bite and defensive frailties. The frustration was mirrored across the stands on Saturday, as another season ends with more questions than progress despite bagging a Nedbank Cup title that ended their decade-long trophy drought, which came with a ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup. Elsewhere, Stellenbosch FC capped a memorable campaign by sealing third place and securing a return to the CAF Confederation Cup, following a 0-0 draw against Cape Town City in a tense Western Cape derby. For City, though, that point might not be enough to preserve their top-flight status. With 27 points – just one above the relegation zone – the Citizens must now nervously await the outcome of the rescheduled 45 minutes between SuperSport United and Golden Arrows, a fixture infamously abandoned due to loadshedding in February. SuperSport, still reeling from a 2-0 defeat to Richards Bay, sit on 26 points and in 15 place that sends a team into the PSL Promotion/Relegation Playoffs and will have a final shot at redemption in that half-match replay. Richards Bay, meanwhile, climbed into eighth place with that victory but Golden Arrows and Magesi FC, both within striking distance, still have a game in hand. Sekhukhune United, despite a 3-2 loss to Arrows, finish fourth, while TS Galaxy, who had already wrapped up their campaign, round out the confirmed top six.

Anthony Weaver 'thrilled' about Dolphins' DT additions in the 2025 NFL draft
Anthony Weaver 'thrilled' about Dolphins' DT additions in the 2025 NFL draft The Miami Dolphins addressed one of their most glaring needs in the 2025 NFL draft by selecting three defensive tackles: Kenneth Grant, Jordan Phillips, and Zeek Biggers. Unsurprisingly, defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver was happy to see it. 'Thrilled about the draft process. It was a collective work of so many, just targeting the guys that we did," Weaver told reporters Wednesday. "Really excited about Kenneth Grant and what he brings to the middle of that defense, and him just being in here and have the opportunity to work with Benito (Jones) and Zach Sieler and obviously (defensive line) Coach (Austin) Clark. Whatever he's supposed to be at the end of the day, I promise you he will reach every bit of God-given potential." The Dolphins selected Grant in the first round with the No. 13 overall pick. He was the second defensive tackle selected and should be a day one starter in Miami after Calais Campbell left to join the Arizona Cardinals in free agency. Last season for Michigan, Grant recorded 32 tackles, six tackles for loss, and three sacks. 'Really happy about Jordan Phillips, guy who was kind of under the radar a little bit, but the way he plays on film and just the person that he is, it's the same thing; he's going to reach that ceiling," Weaver said. "I have really high hopes for both those kids. And then I still don't know how we got Zeek Biggers in the seventh – a guy with that size, that length, that mass to play as hard as he plays, he can end up being a steal for us, too." Phillips started all 12 games last year for Maryland and recorded 29 tackles. With Sieler, Jones, and Grant expected to be the starters, Phillips will have a chance to earn reps as a rotational player. He should have plenty of opportunities during his rookie year to show he can be a contributor to the Miami defensive line. Biggers put up some impressive numbers at Georgia Tech over the last two seasons. He started the last 25 games over the 2023 and 2024 seasons and recorded 63 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks. Biggers also proved to be a quality special teams contributor with two blocked kicks a season ago. "So really happy about those three, they've been putting the work in since they got here. I know we'll live through some growing pains early, as you do with all rookies, but the one thing I do know is that it's going to click faster for them then just because of the work they put in,' Weaver said Wednesday All three rookie defensive linemen are entering a situation where they'll be high on the depth chart. Their development will be a top priority of the coaching staff this offseason and Weaver is excited to ensure they are ready to contribute as soon as possible.

Red-hot Sundowns closes in on an unprecedented PSL record
Sundowns need only one point from two matches to clinch an eighth Premiership title in a row The defending champions would want to do it in style by setting a new record The Pretoria giants are chasing a 23rd win of the season, a feat never achieved before Champions-elect Mamelodi Sundowns are on course to register the most dominant Premiership campaign ever seen in the PSL era. The Pretoria giants have broken all domestic records in the 30-game era. Since the reduction of Premiership teams from 18 to 16 in the 2002/03 season, no team has won 23 matches in a season. Sundowns won 22 games during the 2015/16 campaign and last season. Kaizer Chiefs won 21 games in 2014/15 when they lifted the league title. Ahead of Wednesday's Betway Premiership clash against Chippa United at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London in the Eastern Cape, Sundowns are on 22 wins from 26 league games. A 28-game season This season, the games have been reduced from 30 to 28 after Royal AM were expelled from the PSL last month. The Brazilians, who have won the last seven league titles in succession, need one point from their remaining two games to reach an unassailable 68 points. On Sunday, Miguel Cardoso's side became the first club in a16-team dispensation to surpass the 60-goal mark. This came in the 3-0 win over Stellenbosch at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville in Pretoria, which moved Sundowns to 67 points. A dominant display capped with 3 goals, relive the action from our explosive first half. 🎥 #Sundowns #BetwayPrem #RabatsenaGape — Mamelodi Sundowns FC (@Masandawana) May 12, 2025 Sundowns scored 52 goals last season to win the league title with a record 73 points. Incredibly, Sundowns have scored three goals or more in 12 of their 22 league wins in Pretoria. THE 12 BIG WINS 11 May: Beat Stellenbosch 3-0 in Pretoria 7 May: Beat Chippa 3-0 in Pretoria 30 April: Beat Richards Bay 3-0 in Pretoria 22 February: Won 4-2 against Sekhukhune United in Polokwane 22 February: Crushed TS Galaxy 4-1 in Pretoria 19 February: Won 1-3 against Marumo Gallants in Bloemfontein 8 February: Smashed Pirates 4-1 in Pretoria 5 February: Cruised 3-0 past SuperSport United in the Pretoria derby 2 February: Crushed Golden Arrows 4-0 in Pretoria 30 November 2024: Beat Sekhukhune United 3-0 in Pretoria 30 October 2024: Beat Cape Town City 3-0 in Pretoria 24 September 2024: Smashed Gallants 4-1 in Pretoria Orlando Pirates, second on the table with 55 points, can only get to 67 points in the unlikely scenario that they win all their four remaining games. On Tuesday, Pirates cruised past Golden Arrows 3-0 at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto. Sundowns are set to be handed the league trophy against Magesi at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Saturday. Given their imperious form, few would bet against Sundowns winning one of their remaining two games, if not both. With a two-legged CAF Champions League final against Egyptian club Pyramids looming, Sundowns veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango said the team needed to win matches before the big final. We are also building up to the CAF Champions League final. The more we win, the more we get confidence going to the final. Denis Onyango Sundowns will host Pyramids at the Loftus Stadium on 24 May before they travel to Cairo for the second leg on 1 June. The Brazilians will do battle with Pyramids FC in the #TotalEnergiesCAFCL final! 🇿🇦🇪🇬 #Sundowns #RabatsenaGape — Mamelodi Sundowns FC (@Masandawana) April 25, 2025
