Boy, 11, Died by Suicide After Alleged Bullying from Teacher. Two Years Later, His Parents Sue School Board for Negligence
Two years after an 11-year-old Louis Johnson III, 'LJ,' died by suicide, his parents are suing the school district he was in, alleging that his fifth-grade teacher bullied him, according to court documents obtained and reviewed by PEOPLE.
LJ died by suicide on April 27, 2023. His parents, Tyka Johnson and Louis Johnson Jr., filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Marion County School Board in Ocala, Fla., on Monday, April 21.
They alleged that LJ's teacher, Donna White, bullied him and recruited other students to bully him. The lawsuit names her as Donna, but school records list her name as Dawn. White was a teacher at Legacy Elementary in Ocala.The parents alleged that White 'constantly, consistently and relentlessly publicly humiliated minor child [LJ] in front of his peers, calling him 'stupid' and ridiculing him in front of his classmates on several occasions over the span of months,' per the filing.

They also claim that she would 'recruit other students to ridicule' LJ and urge them to agree with comments that LJ was "stupid" and "didn't know anything," according to the filing.
The parents also claim they reported the bullying allegations to the school board. They alleged that the board was negligent, which caused LJ to suffer depression and anxiety and his death.
On April 21, 2025, the parents demanded trial by jury 'as to all issues triable as a matter of right to a jury.'

After LJ's death, his parents passed out 'Suicide Prevention' flyers at his school. The flyers included the allegations against White. Additionally, a June 2023 investigation into White's behavior was conducted, in which over 24 students — 12 of whom were White's students — alleged that White would sometimes make students cry and comment on students' grades in the classroom, per WCJB. Due to the investigation's findings, her contract was not renewed.
LJ's family also created a GoFundMe after his death to help raise money for his medical and funeral expenses.
'He loved the beach, catching crabs, making TikTok recipes and was a huge advocate for the homeless,' read the description. 'He was a much loved son, brother, uncle and friend. For those of you who knew him, you were the lucky ones. He would light up any room with his infectious smile.'
A representative for the Marion County School Board did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for more information on Monday.
Lawyers for LJ's parents also did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Hit-and-run victim in Norfolk left with serious injuries, driver still at large
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man named Owen Simmons was riding his bike from his occupation as a hairstylist when he was hit by a car and seriously injured in Norfolk on Sunday night, according to police. The hit and run happened at the intersection of Granby St and E Princess Anne Rd. The driver took off and is still yet to be found. 10 On Your Side spoke with Simmons' sister Melissa, who said another driver saw her brother on the road after he was struck and called 911. He was taken to Sentra Norfolk General Hospital for immediate care. 'He was going downhill quite a bit real fast. They ended up putting a breathing tube in him and took him up to the ICU,' said Melissa Sorey, Owen Simmons' sister. Simmons suffered bleeding in his brain, fractures to his face and a C4 spinal cord injury. Police stated his injuries were not life threatening, but Sorey disagrees. 'His face was all messed up and swollen. He had a seizure, and they said he had flatlined also. It was just really devastating to see him the way that he was,' said Sorey. Sorey said it took nearly 24 hours to discover her brother was in the hospital. She did not find out from authorities, but from coworkers who noticed that Simmons had been absent from work. 'I haven't heard anything from the police. He hadn't shown up to work. Another friend started calling around to the hospital and that's when they found him here at Norfolk Sentara,' said Sorey. 10 On Your Side also spoke with Kimberly Bruce, a family friend who had to find where Simmons was hospitalized. 'He had his wallet on him. So, they knew his address, they knew his name. That's the only reason they could identify who he was. Nobody was notified. I had to find him. I called Sentara Norfolk General. After conversing for a little while, I found out he was there,' said Bruce. Bruce and Sorey are calling on anyone with information to come forward so authorities can find the driver responsible. 'Just please come and say something. Anything. Even if you make an anonymous call, ring camera video, anything you've seen, even if it's a half license plate, come and say something to somebody,' said Bruce. The Norfolk Police Department asks anyone with information in this case to call the Norfolk Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. Simmons will have a long road to recovery. A man has been charged after being accused of killing his fiancee who was pregnant with twins, California officials said. On June 8, Ernie Victor Solis, 40, of Napa was accused of killing his 33-year-old fiancee, Hailey Privett, according to a Facebook post by the district attorney's office and the Press Democrat. 'Hailey was a source of strength, love, and laughter. She worked tirelessly to provide a safe, loving home for her children and gave them everything she could, even on her hardest days,' according to a GoFundMe page. Solis is accused of killing Privett and her unborn children in her home, prosecutors said. Privett was the adoptive mother of a 10-year-old girl and a 6-year-old girl, and she was in the process of adopting a foster son, her cousin Elise Maloney told the Napa Valley Register. 'Hailey was such a light and such an amazing mother, first and foremost,' she told the outlet. 'She was a light in this world, a beautiful soul. She dedicated her life to being a fantastic mother. She deserves for the world to know the kind of life that was lost.' Solis was charged with 'murder and faces the special allegation of multiple murder,' a charge that can result in life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or the death penalty, officials said. Officials didn't specify how Privett was killed or what led to the attack. 'Her life was tragically cut short, leaving behind not only unimaginable grief but also the deep and daily needs of the young ones she cherished more than anything,' the GoFundMe page said. California Sen. Alex Padilla was physically removed then handcuffed during a news conference in Los Angeles on Thursday, June 12. He was quickly escorted out of the room after attempting to ask Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem a question. Noem, 53, was holding a press conference to address the ongoing protests against President Donald Trump's immigration policies and the administration's aggressive response. Padilla — who succeeded Kamala Harris in 2021 to become California's first Latino senator — has been an outward Trump critic and directed a recent post on X at the federal immigration raids in Los Angeles. 'Trump isn't targeting criminals in his mass deportation agenda," he wrote, "he is terrorizing communities, breaking apart families and putting American citizens in harm's way.' Video footage that quickly circulated online on Thursday shows officers dragging Padilla out of the room and into the hallway after he says, 'I am Senator Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary.' The footage then captures Padilla, 52, pushed down with his face against the ground and handcuffed by officers wearing FBI vests.
