Ballon d'Or 'should go to Champions League winner', says Ronaldo

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo said Saturday the individual honour should be awarded to a player who won the Champions League.
Speaking ahead of Sunday's Nations League final in Munich between Portugal and Spain, the veteran said "trophies" should determine who wins the Ballon d'Or.
"In my opinion, whoever wins it should be on a team that has won trophies. The Ballon d'Or winner should be in a team that has won the Champions League," the 40-year-old forward told reporters.
First awarded in 1956 by French magazine France Football, the Ballon d'Or is awarded to the player considered the best over the previous season.

Paris Saint-Germain's 5-0 thumping of Inter Milan in the Champions League final last Saturday led to growing calls for Ousmane Dembele to win this season's gong.
Spain starlet Lamine Yamal's superb display in Thursday's 5-4 Nations League semi-final win over France however had some arguing the teenager should be awarded the Ballon d'Or, which would make the 17-year-old the youngest winner in its history.
France coach Didier Deschamps backed Dembele for the award, saying "considering the season Ousmane is having, he deserves it and that's all I wish for him".
At a press conference in Stuttgart on Saturday, France captain Kylian Mbappe told reporters he backed Dembele.
"Does anyone really need me to explain? Right now we're talking about Lamine Yamal and Ousmane Dembele, but I'm voting for Dembele."
Ronaldo said he "cannot tell you who deserves it" this season.
Ronaldo's five wins is bettered only by Argentinian Lionel Messi, who has won the award eight times.
The duo had a monopoly on the award for a decade from Ronaldo's first win in 2008 to his last in 2017.
The current holder is Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

While the likes of tournament hosts England are a professional side who have become used to increasing scrutiny, several of the other 15 competing teams are semi-professional or amateur outfits for whom the World Cup will provide a whole new level of exposure. "Supporting athletes, having an athlete-centred approach, I think, is fundamental to everything that the competition is doing and that we are doing at World Rugby," said Sally Horrox, the global governing body's head of women's rugby. "So our performance teams have been working very closely on programmes with the unions to make sure that there is mental health support, for example, for those athletes who are away from home. Subrayen reported for suspect action after first ODI
Off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen was reported for a suspect bowling action by the umpires after the first ODI between South Africa and Australia on Tuesday. Subrayen, 31, who made his ODI debut in Cairns, will have to undergo an independent assessment of his action at an ICC accredited test facility to determine the legality of his action. Subrayen dismissed Travis Head and finished with 1/46, playing a crucial role in a dominant display by the Proteas that saw them defeat Australia by 98 runs in the opening match of the three-game series. The ICC said on Wednesday match officials 'cited concerns about the legality' of Subrayen's action. It is not the first time Subrayen has fallen foul of match officials for a suspect action. He was suspended for a suspect action in December 2012 after a provincial fixture but was reinstated by Cricket South Africa the next month after his action was cleared. He was also reported for a suspect action in the Champions League T20 competition in 2014 and in November 2015 he was banned after another umpires' report during the domestic T20 competition. A bowler's action is deemed illegal when their elbow extension exceeds 15° of flex.
