Mohali: With high-profile Indian Premier League (IPL) matches scheduled to be held on May 29 and 30 at Maharaja Ranjit Singh Yadavindra Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, deputy commissioner Komal Mittal has directed officials to exercise utmost vigilance to ensure smooth conduct of the events.
Chairing a high-level review meeting, DC Mittal took stock of the arrangements being made for crowd management, security, and public convenience. Emphasising that no lapse would be tolerated, she instructed the police department to manage security and traffic with full alertness and to maintain law and order. "Maintaining peace and ensuring the safety and convenience of the public must be the top priorities," she said.
The DC also directed that traffic flow around the venue should remain unhindered and that clear guidance be provided to spectators about designated parking areas. Police personnel have been tasked with keeping a watchful eye for any signs of unruly behaviour and to act firmly if such incidents arise.
She also instructed the fire department to ensure adequate fire safety arrangements at the venue. The health department has also been asked to carry out food safety inspections and to deploy medical teams on-site for emergency assistance.
Mittal also declared the cricket stadium and its surrounding areas a 'no-fly zone' under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code, 2023. The use of drones or any other flying objects is strictly prohibited from May 29 to May 30.

Row over Bengaluru stampede intensifies after complaint against CM Siddaramaiah filed with governor

Bengaluru: A formal complaint was submitted to Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Saturday against chief minister Siddaramaiah over alleged negligence leading to the June 4 stampede near the Chinnaswamy stadium that claimed 11 lives, even as the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensified its attack on the Congress leadership in the state. In his complaint to the governor, Girish Kumar, a resident of Kottigepalya in Bengaluru, alleged that the chief minister had personally invited the public to participate in the celebrations of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL victory without ensuring adequate safety arrangements. The complaint also questioned the state government's decision to host a grand reception for a private cricket franchise like RCB, claiming that IPL is a commercial venture driven by profit motives rather than national pride. 'Players are bought by franchises and play for money, not for the country or the state,' the letter alleged, pointing out that such celebrations were not extended to national heroes such as soldiers or Olympic athletes. The complainant also criticised deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar for receiving the RCB team at the airport, calling it excessive and unwarranted. He alleged that the government failed in its duty to protect citizens and demanded that those responsible for the mismanagement be held accountable. The stampede on June 4 evening occurred in front of the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team's maiden IPL victory celebrations. At least 11 people died and 56 were injured in the incident. Meanwhile, the one-man inquiry commission constituted by the state government under retired high court judge John Michael Cunha to inquire into the stampede, has been asked to identify the persons responsible for the omissions or deficiencies that led to this incident. A political slugfest over the incident continued, with senior BJP leader and Union minister of state Shobha Karandlaje alleging that CM Siddaramiah and his deputy Shivakumar have 'blood on their hands', holding them directly responsible for the stampede and demanded their resignation. 'The parents who have lost their children are cursing. They (CM and DCM) are trying to wash the blood on their hands and wipe it on police officers,' Karandlaje alleged. Taking to social media, CM Siddaramaiah on Saturday said, 'I have ordered an increase in the compensation announced for the families of those who died in the stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium from ₹10 lakh each to ₹25 lakh.' The increased compensation announcement comes even as victims' family alleged that no one has visited them so far. 'We are a very poor family... It has been three days since my son died, but not a single official has visited our home. We have received no help from the government either,' Mariyamma, mother of Shiva Linga, who died in the stampede, told reporters. Separately, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA)president Raghuram Bhat on Saturday said the resignation of A Shankar and ES Jairam, secretary and treasurer of the governing body, was accepted in an emergency meeting but ruled out dissolving the rest of the managing committee. The emergency meeting was convened after the two senior officials stepped down from their respective roles through a letter to the KSCA president, taking moral responsibility for the stampede . Karnataka Govt Held RCB Event Despite Police's Warning Note? DCP's Letter Surfaces

Last Updated: In a letter to the department of personnel and administrative reforms, DCP MN Karibasvanna warned of security concerns and personnel shortage for the Vidhana Soudha event The Karnataka government ignored an explicit warning from the police about the risks of holding a felicitation ceremony for IPL-winning team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, at the Vidhana Soudha, and still went ahead with it on June 4. Later, in the evening, lakhs of cricket fans gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for the victory celebrations, leading to a stampede that claimed 11 lives. A massive crowd gathered outside the Vidhana Soudha for the felicitation event, which was attended by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar. In a letter dated June 4, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) MN Karibasvanna warned of security concerns and flagged these to the department of personnel and administrative reforms (DPAR). Karibasvanna related his primary concern about the event, which was to take place on the grand steps of the state legislative assembly building, was an acute shortage of officers and personnel. He told DPAR head G Satyavathi that this will severely hamper security arrangements (bandobast) for such a large-scale event. 'The RCB cricket team has a fan following across the country. Organising the event in a hurry on the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha when lakhs of cricket fans will arrive at Vidhana Soudha will lead to problems in security arrangements since there is a shortage of officers/personnel in Vidhana Soudha security division," the letter said. The stampede took place on the evening of June 4 in front of the Chinnaswamy stadium, where a large number of people thronged to take part in the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations. Eleven people died and 56 were injured in the incident. First Published: June 08, 2025, 11:20 IST

IPL's most expensive player, not Rishabh Pant and Venkatesh Iyer, this man got Rs 10.75 crore just to bowl three overs, his name is... plays for...

This year's IPL, a player got ₹10.75 crore for just three overs, surprising fans and making the franchise unhappy. Rishabh Pant and Venkatesh Iyer experienced a lot of criticism after the end of IPL 2025. Although they secured huge deals, their performances did not meet anyone's expectations. The fans let their feelings known that they weren't happy with the runs made by the team. Lucknow Super Giants bought Pant for a massive Rs 27 crore, but he only scored 269 runs in all 14 matches. It made people wonder how fair the team's benefits were for the price they paid. In 11 IPL matches, Venkatesh Iyer, who was bought for Rs 23.75 crore, could manage just 142 runs. Buying so many expensive players without achieving any wins disappointed the KKR fans. One of Delhi Capitals' signings, T Natarajan, whose price was 10.75 crore, only got the chance to play in two matches. In one game, he only bowled for 3 overs, and allowed 49 runs without getting a wicket. Most people argued that Natarajan failed to live up to his enormous pay scale. The rain affected one match, and he only played once and didn't do well.
