Perak, Kedah thrown A1 League lifeline after Super League exit

KUALA LUMPUR: The Amateur Football League (AFL) A1 League could offer Perak and Kedah Darul Aman a lifeline to remain in Malaysian football.
Their time in the top-flight Super League has come to an end after they failed to obtain a national licence for the 2025–2026 season, due to financial difficulties.
AFL chairman Datuk Yusoff Mahadi said they are "open" to welcoming the two teams, adding that the A1 League can provide a crucial opportunity for revival and redemption.
"We don't want teams to just vanish when they fall. The A1 League is a platform for Kedah and Perak to survive and keep fighting," said Yusoff, who is also the FAM deputy president.
Malaysian football was recently rocked by the downfall of former champions Kedah and Perak, who are grappling with financial woes and unpaid wages.
Yusoff said the AFL is willing to extend the A1 League registration deadline to accommodate the two sides.
"Teams like these need space to regroup, rebuild and gradually regain strength. Our hope is that one day, they'll return to the top league," he said.
"The deadline for submission to the A1 League has passed. But since the Malaysian Football League (MFL) just announced this decision, we need to give these teams some time to make the best decision for their squads.
"At AFL, we always provide opportunities and welcome teams to continue competing.
"This way, the welfare of players and staff is protected. Just imagine if they had nowhere to play — these players would have no platform left to compete."

Luxury properties thrive as affordability sinks

Picture an average Malaysian drowning in bills and rising costs, yet a simple glance at the Kuala Lumpur skyline reveals cranes gleaming hard at work, building brand-new, dazzling condominiums with million-ringgit price tags. Malaysia has a real estate paradox and it does not get more obvious than that. While an affordability crisis deepens for ordinary citizens, the high-end property sector continues to thrive. This contradiction raises questions about what drives such a phenomenon.

Karen-Ai Xin make table tennis history with WTT title in Laos

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian table tennis made history in Laos as Karen Lyne and Tee Ai Xin delivered an early Merdeka gift by winning the women's doubles crown at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Feeder Vientiane. The Malaysian pair stunned Taiwan's Wu Ying Shuan-Wu Jia En 11-8, 11-7, 8-11, 11-2 in the final on Friday to become the first Malaysians ever to capture a World Tour title. It was sweet redemption after April's near-miss in Slovenia, when Karen-Ai Xin reached their maiden World Tour final at the Feeder Otocec 1, only to fall short against Japan's Hitomi Sato-Saki Shibata after seeing off Germany's Sophia Klee-Franziska Schreiner in the semis. In Vientiane, the Malaysians started strongly, brushing aside home pair Bounleut Keomany-Chanthida Nomichith 11-1, 11-1, 11-2 in the opening round. They then swept past compatriots Ho Ying-Lim Jing Shuen 11-7, 11-4, 11-6 before storming into the final with a dominant 11-5, 11-2, 11-4 victory over South Korea's Lee Dae Un-Lee Seo Jin. The win continues their remarkable rise after last November's milestone triumph in Bangkok, when they became the first Malaysians to win the women's doubles title at the SEA Championships, beating Vietnam's Tran Mai Ngoc-Nguyen Thi Nga 11-7, 11-9, 11-5. Karen nearly added another trophy in Vientiane, but her mixed doubles campaign with Choong Javen ended in the final with 11-8, 12-10, 11-6 loss to Taiwan's Hung Jing Kai-Wu Ying Shuan "History made for Team Malaysia," the Table Tennis Association of Malaysia declared on Facebook. "This historic achievement would not have been possible without the tireless dedication, guidance and hard work of our coaches. Your commitment behind the scenes has been the backbone of this success." National coach Beh Lee Wei hailed the breakthrough as a timely boost ahead of December's SEA Games in Thailand, where Malaysia will be chasing its first table tennis gold since Phua Bee Sim and Chong Choi Ting won the women's doubles at Manila 1991.

JDT crush 10-man UMD 5-0 in FA Cup first-leg rout

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) romped to a 5-0 victory over A1 League outfit UM-Damansara United (UMD) in the FA Cup first-round, first-leg clash at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Saturday. UMD were left with a mountain to climb after skipper Hariz Mansor saw red in the 37th minute for a second booking. The deadlock was finally broken just before the interval, with JDT left-back Jonathan Silva firing home in the 44th minute. The Argentine doubled his tally with a header ten minutes after the restart. Alberto Diaz made it 3-0 in the 79th minute, finishing off a clever short-corner routine from Nacho Mendez. In the 89th minute, UMD defender Izaaq Izhan brought down Antonio Glauder in the box. After a VAR check, Joao Figueiredo calmly slotted the penalty before Celso Bermejo struck again a minute later to seal a miserable night for the visitors. The two sides will meet again in the return leg on Sept 12. Meanwhile, in Brunei, DPMM edged Kuching City 3-2 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium. Captain Azwan Ali put the hosts ahead in the fifth minute before Kuching's Ronald Ngah levelled just before half-time. James Okwuosa then gave the visitors the lead two minutes after the restart, but Miguel Oliveira quickly hit back for 2-2. David Murray grabbed the winner in the 79th minute to hand DPMM a slender advantage ahead of the second leg in Kuching on Sept 14.
