How Western classics are now weaponised against the West

I felt like the farcical weapons specialist Q, in Stephen Chow Sing-chi's famous James Bond spoof From Beijing with Love, after a reader wrote to me recently. In the scene, Q and Chow's 007 haven't met in a long time.

007: What have you been doing?
Q: Conducting cutting-edge research at a psychiatric institution.
007: What kind of research?
Q: Can't say. I was being experimented on.

When friendly reader Peter Lee told me his son Trevor, who is pursuing a PhD in classics in the United States, presented a paper at the 2025 Annual Meeting of the Society for Classical Studies in which my columns were heavily referenced, I was flattered – until I read his paper. I wasn't so much studied as being rounded on!

Hong Kong 1941 with Chow Yun-fat an unflinching look at Japanese occupation of then-colony

Directed by Leong Po-chih (or Leung Po-chi) in 1984, Hong Kong 1941 is an unflinching look at the horrors of the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong. Advertisement In the film, Chow Yun-fat , Cecilia Yip Tung and Alex Man Chi-leung play a trio of friends who try to survive the privations and degradations of the invasion while plotting their escape. Here we discuss it with film historian Frank Djeng, who provided the commentary for the film's Eureka Entertainment Blu-ray release. Hong Kong 1941 really gets to grips with what happened to ordinary people during the Japanese invasion, doesn't it? Yes. Very few Hong Kong films have dealt with war seriously, and only a few, like Love in a Fallen City, have been made involving the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong. Advertisement Hong Kong 1941 is very character driven – there's a love triangle, which has two guys loving the same girl, in the first third. Then the Japanese invasion erupts into the story, with all the atrocities that it brings.

Photo: Greg Williams 'This felt very different from previous visits to Lake Como because even though it has always felt like a holiday place for me, this time I felt like I would love to shoot a film here; it would be a really beautiful backdrop for some mysterious story, like a film noir. Yesterday we did a photo shoot in black and white by the lake, and even though everything is in bloom and colourful right now, with the trees and lots of flowers, it's actually very beautiful in black and white because there are so many shades of light – shimmery and misty in the morning. Like any girl, I love soft light because it makes you look beautiful. Yesterday we went to a villa for dinner and the light was just gorgeous, with this golden hue to it.' Dressing the part
