Sir Alex Ferguson is surprise guest at Airdrie in play-off final, as skipper admits being star-struck

Daily Record17-05-2025

Adam Frizzell was 'too nervous' to approach the Manchester United legend
As far as pep talks go, few come bigger than from Sir Alex Ferguson – but Diamonds skipper Adam Frizzell was too intimidated to approach the Manchester United and Scotland legend.
Sir Alex was a surprise guest at New Broomfield as Airdrie and Cove Rangers scrapped out a 0-0 draw in their Championship play-off final, with the Diamonds going through courtesy of Wednesday's 2-1 win at the Balmoral Stadium.

The Old Trafford favourite was in the tunnel pre-game, and Frizzell said: 'Sir Alex was in the tunnel and I was too nervous to go and speak to him!

'But aye, I can't believe he was here today.
'A few boys got a photo with him, and it was quite cool that he came to this game.
'Sir Alex has been a speaker at some Airdrie functions in the past, but it's mental, for me he's probably, in my opinion, the greatest ever manager, so to have him at the game is wild.
'I hope he was doing a bit of scouting for Man U, and we've got a chance [of a move] in the summer!
'I don't think you need a booster for a game like that, the boys were right up for, it, maybe even a bit too much in our performance – I thought we were a bit uptight, but that just shows how much the boys care.'

Roy Keane slams 'lazy' England star and demands immediate Thomas Tuchel change

England fell to a dismal defeat against Senegal after taking the lead against their African opponents and Roy Keane has branded one Three Lions star as 'lazy' after the outing Kyle Walker is the latest victim of a savage assessment from Roy Keane as the former Manchester United captain accused the full-back of being 'lazy'. Walker was deemed culpable for Senegal's opening goal at the City Ground as England fell to a 3-1 defeat. The Three Lions opened the scoring through Harry Kane before goals from Ismaila Sarr and Habib Diarra saw the visitors pull ahead. Jude Bellingham looked to have spared England's blushes but saw his goal ruled out by VAR for a handball in the build up, before Cheikh Sabaly rounded of the scoring in stoppage time. ‌ Thomas Tuchel's side started the game well but a lapse in the backline allowed Senegal back into the game. Trevoh Chalobah had shadowed Chelsea team-mate Nicolas Jackson after he received a bouncing ball over the top but could not prevent a looping cross into the box. ‌ Walker was slow to respond to the ball being played over Chalobah's head, despite being well-positioned, allowing Crystal Palace's Sarr to send the ball into the net without much pressure. Manchester City's Walker rolled on the floor after being caught on his heels. And Keane was unimpressed with Walker's actions. The pundit provided a pointed critique of the defender's efforts. "If this is a young right back, you're thinking it's inexperience," Keane said on ITV's coverage of the game. "But I think he's being lazy. "He almost can't be bothered getting back. For a vastly experienced player, you can't be making mistakes like that." Ian Wright added: "If Kyle gets in there, he probably clears that." ‌ Former Arsenal and England full-back Lee Dixon was no more forgiving. On commentary he said: "As a defender, you have to think the worst is going to happen. "The ball is going to be kept in, and you have got to be ahead of the game. Just look at Walker. "Sarr is goal side He has to expect the ball to come in. He just goes to sleep. Poor from Walker." ‌ Keane suggested such night will leave Tuchel with questions over a number of players. "Every time I watch England in the last few games, I think they could do a lot more," he said. "It's as if they're waiting for a setback. "That said, Gordon should score, they should be 2-0 up. Walker shouldn't make a mistake. Ultimately, the manager will still have question marks over some of these players."

Man Utd set sky-high asking price for wantaway Alejandro Garnacho with Premier League rivals Chelsea and Villa on alert

MANCHESTER UNITED have slapped a hefty £70MILLION price tag on wantaway star Alejandro Garnacho. The fed-up Argentine winger is set to leave United after being dropped from the starting line-up for the team's Europa League final defeat by Tottenham last month. 3 3 Garnacho, 20, was left fuming after being benched in Bilbao. He later angered his team-mates after giving an interview where he described United's season as 's**t'. Amorim responded to Garnacho's comments by telling him to find a new club in front of his team-mates at United's Carrington training ground. SunSport exclusively revealed that Garnacho may get a Saudi escape route, with Cristiano Ronaldo's side Al-Nassr interested. But reports around Garnacho's asking price have since boosted from around £50million to a staggering £70million. It is understood that five teams are monitoring Garnacho's situation, including Premier League duo Chelsea and Aston Villa. Garnacho's relationship with Amorim fell apart after a dressing room spat boiled over in front of team-mates. Amorim reportedly told Garnacho he needs to "pray he can find a new club." United have since signed Matheus Cunha and are eyeing up Swede goal machine Viktor Gyokeres. Garnacho appeared in 36 Premier League games last season, contributing six goals and three assists. Evans not rushing next move after Man Utd exit

Former Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans says he is in no rush to make a decision about his future after leaving Manchester United. I don't feel like I'm in a rush to do anything."Evans made 241 appearances across his two United spells and also spent three years at West Brom from 2015 before joining played a key role as the Foxes won the FA Cup in 2021 before returning to Old Trafford on a one-year deal in 2023, winning the 2024 FA Cup before extending his deal for a further season. Evans won 107 caps for Northern Ireland before calling time on his international career last year. A key player in Northern Ireland's journey to the Euro 2016 knockout stages, Evans is hopeful his former boss Michael O'Neill can lead the current squad to World Cup qualification."When you've got Michael O'Neill in charge, he gives everyone a little bit of hope," added Evans, speaking at half-time in Tuesday's Iceland game at Windsor Park. "He's taken the team to a major tournament before and if you want anyone in charge, it's him. "When I look at this team it reminds me of ourselves. He's playing five at the back and he has Isaac Price, he's on a good run of form. "You look throughout the team, you see Dan Ballard and Trai Hume getting promoted, they'll be playing Premier League football and that'll only be good for the team."I'm excited. Over the next couple of years I think we'll see them progress together."
