Dundee are regular foes for Airdrie, says skipper as he eyes cup games

Adam Frizzell joked that he's played against Dundee 'four times' in his time at the Diamonds Playing against Dundee is almost a regular occurrence for Airdrie, but skipper Adam Frizzell is looking forward to their Premier Sports Cup group stages in July. Airdrie came through their group stages last season with wins over East Kilbride, Dumbarton and Queen of the South, while losing at Aberdeen, and came up against a strong Dundee side in the quarter-finals, receiving a 6-1 hiding. ‌ Airdrie have met the Taysiders in the League Cup and Scottish Cup in recent seasons, and kick off their campaign at Dens Park on July 12, with Frizzell joking about how often that has happened. ‌ But Airdrie also have games at home to Bonnyrigg Rose on July 15, at Montrose seven days later, and end with a visit from Alloa on July 26. Frizzell reckons it's a good way to monitor summer progress. 'Dundee again is something,' said Frizzell. 'I think I've played against them four times since I've been at Airdrie, and we've not been in the same division, which is mad. 'I love that cup format, so I look forward to that group, and it's something we've done well in, over the last couple of years. 'We'll be looking to make the last-16 again. ‌ 'It's very difficult to get through the group, actually, when you look at the teams that miss out. You need to win a minimum of three games out of four. 'When you're playing a Premiership team in one of those games it's very difficult, but we've done well in the past, and I love that competition, so it will be one I'm looking forward to.' Frizzell added: 'It's a good way to gauge your progress, and it's better than playing in the pre-season games, in my opinion. I don't think you get much from them, other than a base fitness, and you want to get right into the competitive stuff. ‌ 'I used to hate the long-winded pre-season, when you've got six or eight games – when you feel you're fit, you're ready to go there and then. 'That's why I really enjoy that format, you're right into the competitive stuff, and it gives you a good gauge of where you're at, playing against different teams. 'We had a couple of games at the tail-end of last season. We played Ayr United in the last league game, we were in no-man's land, so were they, they were waiting on the play-offs at the right side of the table. 'It was getting players up to speed again, boys getting minutes, and that's the way you feel in pre-season. 'But with these cup games it gives you a real idea of where your starting XI is at, and it's competitive games, which is what you want to play in.'

Airdrie skipper sets Championship 'challenge' target after play-off scrap

Adam Frizzell wants the Diamonds to hit the ground running next season Adam Frizzell says Airdrie fans have reasons to be optimistic and reckons his side will again be Championship challengers next season. The Diamonds stayed in the second tier via a combination of Hamilton Accies' 15-point deduction, and by coming through play-off clashes against Stenhousemuir and Cove Rangers. ‌ But having endured an injury-ravaged season, Frizzell reckons if Airdrie hit the ground running, they will be right up there next term. ‌ He said: 'If you look at the form table, we were in or around the top-four, and I think that's where we should be, with the squad we have. 'If we can take that into next season, I think we would be fine. 'There are a few teams in the league with big budgets and stuff, but I think we have a really good group in there and next season is an exciting one. 'If we can hit the ground running and start the way we played in the last three months, we'll be absolutely fine.' Frizzell added: 'I was talking to the management team, and they said the probability at Christmas for us to stay in the league was two per cent, and we've done it. ‌ 'There were outside circumstances with Hamilton and stuff, but that's outwith our control – we were gifted that and we took it. 'The boys have been excellent in the last three months, and we've deserved it. 'It's a really good group in there, regardless of what happened, the club is in a really good place. ‌ 'Since I've come it has been night and day. Off the pitch, things are getting better, on the pitch things are on an upwards trajectory. 'We've had this blip this season, but it's a young team. We'll learn from it, put a line under it, and go again next season.' Airdrie had just one league win to their name for the first half of the season, with an injury list like Frizzell has never seen. He said: 'It has seemed never-ending. I think there was one point this season when we had 11 boys out for 12 weeks of over, which is unheard of in my career – I've never seen anything like it. 'It has been a long season, I'm not going to lie to you, but the boys have dug in and, since the turn of the year, by and large we've been really good, and I think we deserved it.'

Airdrie captain admits they were poor over play-off final - but staying up is all that matters

Adam Frizzell admits the clashes with Cove came at the end of a punishing season Airdrie captain Adam Frizzell admits his side didn't hit their peak in the Championship play-off final – but staying up is all that matters. Frizzell and co dug out a tense 0-0 draw with Cove Rangers at New Broomfield on Saturday, in scorching temperatures, and got over the line courtesy of their 3-1 win at the Balmoral Stadium on Wednesday. ‌ There weren't many chances in the game, with Lewis McGrattan forcing a top save from Nick Suman, while Cade Melrose blocked well from Adam Emslie at the other end in the first half. ‌ While Cove threw balls into the box, they never really came close to scoring, as Airdrie limped over the line. Frizzell admitted: 'We didn't play anywhere near as well as we wanted to, over the two legs, but it doesn't matter, we're in the league, that's all that matters. 'That's the sort of performance you get at the end of a long season, in scorching temperatures, and with a lot riding on it. 'I think you've got to give Cove a lot of credit as well, I thought they were very good over the piece, and have players that can hurt you. 'I thought the game ebbed and flowed. Even when they had the ball, I can't think of a chance they had, and we missed a few. 'I think if we had got that goal it would have settled us down, but we dug in, held on, and it does not matter – we're in the league next season and that is all that matters.'

Sir Alex Ferguson is surprise guest at Airdrie in play-off final, as skipper admits being star-struck

Adam Frizzell was 'too nervous' to approach the Manchester United legend As far as pep talks go, few come bigger than from Sir Alex Ferguson – but Diamonds skipper Adam Frizzell was too intimidated to approach the Manchester United and Scotland legend. Sir Alex was a surprise guest at New Broomfield as Airdrie and Cove Rangers scrapped out a 0-0 draw in their Championship play-off final, with the Diamonds going through courtesy of Wednesday's 2-1 win at the Balmoral Stadium. ‌ The Old Trafford favourite was in the tunnel pre-game, and Frizzell said: 'Sir Alex was in the tunnel and I was too nervous to go and speak to him! ‌ 'But aye, I can't believe he was here today. 'A few boys got a photo with him, and it was quite cool that he came to this game. 'Sir Alex has been a speaker at some Airdrie functions in the past, but it's mental, for me he's probably, in my opinion, the greatest ever manager, so to have him at the game is wild. 'I hope he was doing a bit of scouting for Man U, and we've got a chance [of a move] in the summer! 'I don't think you need a booster for a game like that, the boys were right up for, it, maybe even a bit too much in our performance – I thought we were a bit uptight, but that just shows how much the boys care.'

Airdrieonians earn first-leg lead over Cove in play-offs

Airdrieonians took an advantage in the first leg of the Scottish Championship play-off final with a 2-1 victory over Cove at Balmoral Stadium. The visitors relied on a set-piece to put themselves in front with right-back Dylan MacDonald rising highest off a corner to nod in Adam Frizzell's delivery after 16 minutes. The lead did not last long however with Lewis McGrattan's own goal after 35 minutes giving the hosts a way back going into the break. The visitors had looked the more likely to get the winner and they did just that with Lewis Strapp's guided finish into the bottom right corner marking his first of the season. The sides face off again on Saturday at Excelsior Stadium as they fight to secure their place in the second tier.
