New free summer tennis initiative launched in Rhymney
The programme, aimed at bringing youngsters together to promote positive communities, health, and fitness, started this week as part of the Respect Rhymney initiative.
Gwent Police's neighbourhood officers are working with sport development officers from Caerphilly County Borough Council for the scheme.
The free programme, named 'In the Right Court,' will run every Monday between 4pm and 6pm.
It aims to give young people the chance to meet neighbourhood officers, learn tennis skills, and enjoy community learning.
All tennis equipment is provided.
Inspector Lysha Thompson, leading the programme, said: "It was great to see such a fantastic turnout for the opening session, with over 30 young people – aged between three and 12 – coming down to the courts to meet officers.
"With a mix of drills, exercises and games, there was something for everyone, and it provided us with a great opportunity to meet the children and their guardians, and, as well as all the tennis on show, strike up a conversation around how we can all make Rhymney a community to be proud of."
The next session is scheduled for Monday, June 9, and will continue every Monday, weather permitting, until the end of September.
The Respect Rhymney programme is part of Gwent Police's Clear, Hold, Build initiative.
The 'Clear' phase involves targeting crime groups to prevent their operation.
This is followed by enforcement and engagement to maintain the area and prevent other organised crime groups from moving in.
The 'Build' phase focuses on fostering pride in the area and educating children and young people on the consequences of crime and antisocial behaviour.
The initiative aims to create a safer, more engaged community in Rhymney by involving young people in positive activities.

A HEARTBROKEN family have paid tribute to the "kindest of souls", 20, who was killed in a quad bike crash. Ethan Powell tragically died after the horror unfolded on a stretch of road between Rhymney and Dowlais, in Merthyr Tydfil, on May 31. 2 Officers were called to the incident at around 4.50am and pronounced the youngster dead at the scene. 'Ethan; forever 20, forever loved.' It comes as police have arrested five people in connection with Ethan's death. A 43-year-old man, from Tredegar, and a 34-year-old man, from Pontypridd, were both arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender. They remain in police custody. A Merthyr man, 41, was also arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender. He has been released on conditional bail as investigations continue. However he was recalled to prison in connection with an unrelated enquiry. Another Merthyr man, 40, was detained on suspicion of murder and driving whilst unfit through drink and driving while unfit through drugs. A second man, 37 and from Merthyr also, was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender. Both were released on conditional bail as enquiries continue. Detective Chief Inspector for Gwent Police, Matthew Edwards, the senior investigating officer, said on Tuesday: "We're keen to speak to anyone who was travelling along the A465 between the hours of 2am and 5am on Saturday morning, especially motorists with dashcam, as they could have details that might assist our enquiries. "It is still our view that a second vehicle – a white BMW that was found burnt out in the Dowlais area – may have been involved in the collision. Dog owner frightened after Pitbull attack at Newport park
The attack happened in Cefn Wood around 16:45pm Wednesday May 29. Frightened dog owner 76-year-old Tracey White said her Welsh Collie puppy Neo was attacked by a 'black and white Pitbull type dog.' Tracey told the Argus 'Every day I take my daughters dog to Cefen Wood fields, my pup ran out the gate from my house where he knew Milo (My daughter's dog) would be. 'Neo was off his lead and was on his back with his paws in the air totally submissive. 'I saw a man with his dog and asked him if he was friendly, he said he was, so I let Neo go over but then he had him by his chest and his throat.' I was screaming, and two workmen came running over. 'The workmen managed to get hold of Neo then he (the owner) let go of the lead and he had him a second time. It makes me think, what if it was a child.' According to Tracey the man responded aggressively when confronted. 'He said my dog was only nipped and said to go online and look at some real dog fights.'
