Bagels returning to Detroit's Core City: Ann Arbor's Bev's Bagels to open

Yahoo10-04-2025
A popular Ann Arbor area bagel pop-up with a loyal following is bringing its sourdough bagels and sandwiches to a permanent home in Detroit's Core City neighborhood.
Bev's Bagels from Huntington Woods native and award-winning chef Max Sussman is filling the space that housed the former and beloved Detroit Institute of Bagels (DIB).
Sussman's wildly popular pop-up, named after his grandmother and paying homage to his family roots, is his take on Jewish bagel traditions.
A late spring opening in the former DIB space is planned, according to a news release, with a focus on organic sourdough bagels and bagel sandwiches. Detroit Institute of Bagels, commonly known as DIB, abruptly shuttered last July. The beloved DIB took over the space of Ochre bakery, another previous Core City favorite.
While Sussman is opening a brick-and-mortar in Core City, Ann Arbor pop-up followers need not worry. Sussman plans to continue the Ann Arbor pop-ups once the Detroit spot opens.
In Core City, expect Bev's Bagels sandwiches to use carefully sourced ingredients such as wild-smoked salmon and ethically raised meat.
"Making bagels is a huge passion of mine and I'm so excited to offer really great bagels to Detroit,' Sussman says. 'Opening in Core City feels like an incredible opportunity to build on something that was so special to the community and still so needed.'
Chewy and crisp are what Bev's Bagels signature bagels are noted for, but the bagel sandwiches will also be the highlight in Core City. According to a news release, Sussman's bagels start with a sourdough starter paired with organic flour and some whole grains.
In Core City, Bev's Bagels will offer creative schmears, bagel sandwiches with carefully sourced ingredients, bagels-to-go, coffee and other specialties daily.
'I'm pretty obsessive over the details, so the sandwiches will all have these amazing components, from creative schmears to wild smoked fish to ethically sourced meats,' Sussman said.
The Core City location also plans to offer menu options designed for catering small and large gatherings.
Bev's Bagels began in 2023 out of Sussman's house and has since attracted a cult-like following. More recently, the pop-up has been taking place at the Argus Café on Packard in Ann Arbor.
Sussman is a cookbook author along with his brother, Eli, and is known for his work in New York's culinary scene at Roberta's and The Breslin. In 2012, Sussman was named a semifinalist for a James Beard Award Rising Star Chef of the Year in New York.

Tassat Names Glen Sussman CEO as Firm Eyes Next Stage of Institutional Growth

Blockchain payments provider Tassat Group has appointed its president and chief strategy officer Glen Sussman as its new chief executive officer, the company said in a press release Tuesday. Sussman, who joined Tassat in 2021, will succeed outgoing CEO Zain Saidin. Saidin will remain on the company's board and take on a new role as senior adviser, supporting Tassat's institutional growth strategy, the firm said. During Sussman's time with the firm, he helped launch its flagship products. That includes Lynq, a real-time, interest-bearing settlement network for digital asset institutions, built with Arca Labs and tZERO, as well as the Digital Interbank Network, the first U.S. tokenized deposit network operating within the regulatory perimeter, Tassat said. The leadership change comes as Tassat looks to expand the footprint of Lynq, which it describes as a fully integrated settlement platform underpinned by 'interest-in-transit' intellectual property. The company said it expects to hit key development milestones in the months ahead as it works to broaden access and increase adoption among institutional partners. 'Tassat is uniquely positioned to power the next chapter of market infrastructure,' Sussman said in the release. 'We look forward to deploying solutions that accelerate the adoption of stablecoins, tokenized deposits, and digital asset securities, while delivering compliant, institutional-grade infrastructure to drive the future of regulated finance," he added.

Milwaukee's Phoenix Residential will be a first of its kind affordable housing center for Wisconsin

Phoenix Residential, a 31-unit affordable housing development in the works on Milwaukee's north side, would become the first of its kind in Wisconsin — a small-scale facility with crisis units and access to mental health and housing education services for residents. Construction started at the 2436 North 50th Street historical building in June and is estimated to be completed by April. The development combines 21 permanent rooms funded by residential assistance vouchers and 10 crisis units for individuals who need housing quickly, James Mathy, housing administrator with the Milwaukee County Department of Health and Human Services, said during a walk-through on Aug. 20. The housing development will join a handful of similar facilities nationwide, Mathy said, and hopefully, the smaller size will be inviting to individuals who are hesitant to utilize larger homeless shelters. "This is better for the people that we serve," he said. "It's not quite as overwhelming, and we are really able to cater those services directly to those individuals." Mathy said there won't be a limit on stays. 'We really want our clients to determine how long they need to be here. So it could be one day, it could be six months,' Mathy said. 'Our goal is to take folks in housing like this and move them into permanent apartments as quickly as possible.' The building recently housed a rehabilitation center and before that was home to nuns and priests. It later became Milwaukee's first Jewish home. 'This place has always been a place of care and also social impact and relationship with the city and the county. Here, we want to continue that legacy of social impact,' said Anthony Kazee, of KG Development. Tenancy support would seek to help those in crisis housing maintain permanent housing, Mathy said. Kazee said funding came from 10 sources, including federal, state, county and city funds, such as such as low-income housing tax credits. Milwaukee County invested more than $1.3 million. 'This helps to eliminate barriers that people may see when it comes down to being on the road to recovery, looking for work, assessing health services but simply picking themselves up,' County Executive David Crowley said. The project received historical tax credits to allow redevelopment of the building, while historical elements like doors and windows will remain. Milwaukee County Housing Division will be responsible for filling the units. Billionaire behind Paramount mega-deal obtaining Israeli residency

Korff's connection to Israel spans several years, marked by his substantial charitable donations to various Israeli causes, including the IDF, medical institutions, and local community projects. Brandon Korff, a Jewish-American billionaire renowned for orchestrating one of the media industry's landmark deals, the $35 billion sale of Paramount, is in the process of securing Israeli residency. A senior government official confirmed that Korff recently filed his application for Israeli residency, framing his decision as a gesture of solidarity in the face of global boycotts and rising hostility. In 2025, Korff significantly increased his time spent in Israel, becoming a more visible figure within the country. 'This is a meaningful and encouraging step for Israel,' the official remarked. 'At a time when Israel's global standing is under scrutiny, such a powerful media figure is a welcome presence.' Korff's connection to Israel spans several years, marked by his substantial charitable donations to various Israeli causes, including the IDF, medical institutions, and local community projects. His philanthropic support has noticeably grown in tandem with his longer stays in the country. Additionally, his brother served as a lone soldier in an elite IDF unit. Invigorating Paramount's legacy Korff is the grandson of the late Sumner Redstone, the influential media mogul behind Paramount, which, under his leadership, grew into a global powerhouse. In addition to owning major networks like CBS and MTV, Paramount held the rights to some of the most iconic entertainment properties, including Star Trek and Mission: Impossible. The company's recent sale at a valuation of $35 billion marked a historic shift. Korff's move to obtain Israeli residency is viewed by political officials as a step that could help build stronger connections between Israel and one of the most prominent families in global media, and as a clear vote of confidence in the country at a particularly sensitive time.
