Odisha's infrastructure plans in eco-zones to be reviewed by CEC
The panel has now called for a meeting and asked chief secretary Manoj Ahuja to discuss crucial tourism and bridge infrastructure projects as well as the matter pertaining to eco sensitive zone (ESZ) finalisation. The meeting is scheduled on July 17 at New Delhi.
Sources said issues of governance and execution model for tourism infrastructure which have a bearing on sanctuaries, national parks, tiger reserve areas and Ramsar sites will be taken up by the CEC. Similarly, tourism projects requiring forest and ESZ clearances and stake of the Tourism department in ESZ finalisation will also be discussed.
The SC-constituted panel has also asked the principal chief conservator of forests (general), PCCF (wildlife) and Secretary, Tourism department to be take part in the meeting which will specifically discuss two critical infrastructure projects in the state.
One of the contentious projects is the proposed construction of a two-lane national highway over Chilika lagoon by the National Highways Authority of India. The 7.740 km project, estimated at a cost of around Rs 526.08 crore, had prompted the expert appraisal committee (EAC) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to seek a cost-benefit analysis from the state government.

Shimla, July 6 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh, revered as Dev Bhoomi for its spiritual heritage and scenic beauty, is now transforming as Khel Bhoomi — a rising land of sporting excellence. A government spokesperson said here today that the state is undergoing a dynamic transformation into a sports powerhouse. The evolution is driven by the government's commitment to developing world-class infrastructure, nurturing young talent, and creating an inclusive sports ecosystem, he said, asserting that Himachal is not only advancing its sporting landscape but also setting an example for other states to follow. At the heart of this change is the construction of a multi-purpose sports complex in Kharedi, Nadaun (Hamirpur district). "With an investment of Rs 65 crore, this facility will include an eight-lane swimming pool, shooting range, wrestling and boxing arenas, kabaddi and yoga centres, along with modern infrastructure for table tennis and badminton. This landmark initiative aims to shape the next generation of sporting talent in the state," he said. "Further boosting infrastructure, the government is setting up a 100-bed sports hostel in Luhnu, Bilaspur, and enhancing facilities at the Rajiv Gandhi Multi-Purpose Stadium in Katasani, Shimla, he added. Indoor stadiums are coming up in Solan, and new sports centres are being developed in Reckong-Peo, Haroli, and Jaisinghpur. Synthetic tracks and field facilities in Hamirpur and Sujanpur are also underway to provide high-performance training environments," he said. Understanding the critical role of nutrition, the state has significantly increased diet allowances for sportspersons, he stated, adding that the primary-level players receive Rs 250 per day during state competitions, while others get Rs 400. "For out-of-state events, allowances go up to Rs 500. Hostel athletes receive Rs 250 per day within the state and Rs 400 outside. So far, Rs 76.98 lakh has been distributed to 421 athletes under this initiative. "To further ease participation, the government covers travel expenses for competitions. Athletes traveling up to 200 km are given AC 3-tier train fare, while longer journeys are supported with economy class air fare. A total of Rs 6.01 lakh has been disbursed to 235 athletes for travel support," he said. In a progressive move, student-athletes competing in state and national events are now marked 'present on special leave' instead of absent, ensuring their academic progress isn't hampered by sports participation, said the spokesperson. Acknowledging sporting achievements, the government has significantly raised rewards and Rs 14.77 crore has been distributed among 21 international medallists, and Rs 44 lakh awarded to other top performers, he informed. Through structured training, financial support, and inclusive policies, Himachal is nurturing talent at every level, he maintained, adding that Himachali athletes are making their presence felt on medal tallies nationwide, reinforcing the state's growing prominence in Indian sports. Will move SC seeking uniform rules for overage vehicles, says Delhi CM
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Sunday that the BJP government will approach the Supreme Court seeking uniform rules for overage or 'end of life' vehicles in the national capital that are in line with the regulations followed across the country. Lieutenant-Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has also written to Ms. Gupta, urging her government to file a review petition in the apex court. He said it is 'irrational' that a 10-year-old diesel vehicle is deemed to have reached the end of its life in Delhi while remaining 'roadworthy' in other parts of the country. A 2018 Supreme Court judgment had banned diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi as part of efforts to reduce vehicular pollution. 'We will tell the Supreme Court about the pollution control measures taken by the government. Parameters applicable in the rest of the country should apply to Delhi too. We don't want Delhiites to face any inconvenience,' Ms. Gupta told reporters. In his letter, the L-G acknowledged that air pollution is a shared responsibility and must be tackled with urgency and foresight. He called for a more 'balanced and technologically advanced framework' to address vehicle emissions. 'The policy execution must also reflect principles of legality, fairness, and socio-economic sensitivity,' it stated. 'Put ban on hold' Last week, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa wrote to the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM), requesting that it put on hold its directive to deny fuel to ELVs at petrol pumps. He also objected to the impounding of such vehicles identified through automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras. The CAQM is yet to respond. On April 23, the CAQM had directed that all ELVs identified through ANPR or similar systems at fuel stations would be denied fuel from July 1 in Delhi, from November 1 in Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, and Sonipat, and from April 1, 2026, in the rest of the National Capital Region (NCR). The Delhi government initially supported the CAQM's directive, and from July 1, the Transport Department and the Delhi police began impounding ELVs at fuel stations. However, within days, Mr. Sirsa wrote again to the CAQM, urging the panel to pause the enforcement of the ban.

J&K govt, biz seek 5% GST on handicraft items
Omar Abdullah NEW DELHI: Jammu & Kashmir govt has sought lower GST on handloom and handicraft products in a move aimed at making pashmina shawls and silk carpets more affordable for Indian buyers. Currently, handloom and handicrafts items that cost Rs 1,000 or more attract 12% tax, and the proposal is to lower the levy to 5% on all products. Responding to the demand, Union minister Piyush Goyal suggested the businesses should take up the issue with the finance ministry. "We will try to reduce it. We will try to find a way," he said at an industry event. The proposal for pashmina shawls has been with the GST Council for several months and even CM Omar Abdullah had raised it in Jaisalmer in Dec.
