Oil prices tad down amid uncertainty over US involvement in Israel-Iran conflict, stronger dollar

New Delhi: Global crude prices were trading marginally lower on Thursday morning amid a stronger dollar and uncertainty over the involvement of the US in the Israel-Iran conflict. At 10.55 am, the August contract of Brent in the Intercontinental Exchange was trading at $76.61, 0.12% lower from its previous close but higher than the session's low of $75.78 per barrel. Mixed signals from US President Donald Trump over the direct participation of the US in the ongoing war in West Asia are keeping traders on their toes, experts said. After indicating through social media platforms on Tuesday that the US intends to join Israel in its conflict against Iran, Trump on Wednesday said the US may or may not join the war. According to a Sky News report, Trump told reporters: 'I may do it. I may not do it… Nobody knows what I'm going to do… Iran's got a lot of trouble, and they want to negotiate.' Sriram Iyer, senior research analyst at Reliance Securities, said 'international crude prices started weaker on Thursday morning trading in Asia as markets awaited clarity on potential US involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict'. Rahul Kalantri, vice president for commodities at Mehta Equities, said earlier gains had been reversed as traders awaited clarity on whether the US will join Israel in striking Iran. 'The ongoing conflict, now in its seventh day, continues to elevate risks. Despite the pullback, crude remains near five-month highs. Meanwhile, the Fed (US Federal Reserve) held rates steady and projected slower growth with elevated inflation for 2025, adding a potential tailwind for oil demand through improved growth prospects,' said Kalantri. US Federal Reserve officials, however, have left the door open to cutting interest rates in the second half of the year, according to a Wall Street Journal report. On Wednesday, crude oil prices remained elevated for a sixth consecutive day, moving close to a five-month high as traders worried about potential disruptions to Iran's crude oil exports amid the escalating Israel-Iran conflict.

Align On Iran, Pivot Away From China: Decoding Trump's Lunch Message To Asim Munir

Last Updated: Trump has promised Pakistan unprecedented access to American defence technology in return for unconditional military and strategic support against Iran US President Donald Trump, in a high-stakes diplomatic manoeuvre, hosted Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff Field Marshall Asim Munir for a closed-door lunch at the White House on Wednesday. According to top diplomatic sources in Washington, the meeting was anything but ceremonial as Trump laid out a series of sweeping demands and bold offers aimed at reshaping the regional power balance. Pakistan remains the only nuclear nation in the region not firmly aligned with the US-India-Israel-Gulf alliance architecture, including coalitions like I2U2 and US-GCC pacts. Trump's overtures to Munir are widely viewed as an attempt to bring Pakistan into this strategic fold—especially as the US shores up regional support in the face of escalating tensions with Iran. Experts believe this could be the most significant shift in US-Pakistan relations since the post-9/11 War on Terror alliance. However, Pakistan's response—especially regarding its strategic ties with China—remains to be seen. About the Author Manoj Gupta First Published:

"India-Canada relations are now getting back on track": Defence Expert Sanjeev Srivastava hails PM Modi's visit

Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 19 (ANI): Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Canada and meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Defence Expert Sanjeev Srivastava on Thursday said that India-Canada relations are now getting back on track. Srivastava said that by reinstating their respective High Commissioners, both India and Canada have taken constructive steps to restore stability in the relationship. 'In a positive development, India and Canada have decided to reinstate their High Commissioners. Tensions between the two countries had significantly escalated after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made baseless allegations against India regarding the killing of terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The previous Trudeau government had also failed to take action against Khalistani terrorists, which had caused deep resentment in India,' the Defence expert told ANI. 'However, now that a new Prime Minister has been elected in Canada, India was invited to the G7 summit, and the discussions between the two Prime Ministers were positive. PM Modi was welcomed with great applause in Canada. This is a constructive turn of events, and India-Canada relations are now getting back on track,' Sanjeev Srivastava said. PM Modi visited Canada to attend the 51st G7 Summit at the invitation of his counterpart, Mark Carney. Earlier, PM Modi met Canadian PM Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit. Notably, this was the first in-person meeting between the two leaders after Canada's recent general elections. During the meeting, the leaders reaffirmed the importance of India-Canada ties and agreed to take constructive steps to restore stability in the relationship, with the early return of High Commissioners to each other's capitals, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), said in a statement on Wednesday. As per the MEA, the meeting between PM Modi and PM Carney provided an opportunity for both sides to hold frank and forward-looking discussions on the state of India-Canada relations and the way ahead. The leaders reaffirmed the importance of India-Canada ties, based on shared democratic values, respect for the rule of law and commitment to upholding the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. They underlined the need to pursue a constructive and balanced partnership grounded in mutual respect for concerns and sensitivities, strong people-to-people ties, and growing economic complementarities. In a significant development, it was announced by the MEA in its statement that India and Canada 'agreed to take calibrated and constructive steps to restore stability in the relationship, beginning with the early return of High Commissioners to each other's capitals.'
