The history of Erie's famous pepperoni balls
The pepperoni ball originated during the depression. Italian immigrants would take the scraps left over from their fish, and wives would roll the scraps in dough, deep fry them and give them to their family. But as the economy improved, people started experimenting with other fillings besides fish scraps.
'Eventually, it was decided to stay with sliced pepperoni. Everybody loves pepperoni, and it has a really good flavor. Its a nice mix of the warm grease and it melts right into the bread and especially with the cheese and pepperoni ball you get the nice chewyness of the cheese the nice pepperoni meat in there, and deep fry it, and its a home town favorite,' said Tom Spagel with Stanganelli's Italian Foods.
Over the decades, the hometown favorite has made its mark in Erie. Stanganelli's is one of the local places that make them.
'It's one of those unique fun things about Erie. Pepperoni balls are just fun, whether you are at a grade school ice cream social, they will have them there, whether it's at the Erie SeaWolves and baseball, or the Otters. Anywhere there are kids, there's families, people like pepperoni balls,' said Spagel.
He said pepperoni rolls are made all over the country, but Erie's are deep-fried.
Stanganelli's Italian Foods is an older building, with a lot of history, a lot of people inside and a lot of machinery to make the famous Erie staple.
Tom and his brother Jimmy have owned and operated the building for over three decades. They bought it from the fourth owner of the business.
The business was founded in 1961 by Italian chief Cosmo Staginelli.
When Tom and his brother took over, they had three employees and were located on 25th and East Avenue.
Since then, they have expanded to about 40 employees, and they have been in their current building for 27 years. They sell mostly to grocery stores and distributors.
What does it mean to work for a company that means so much to the people of Erie?
'I never really looked like it like that, I always looked at it like just hanging out with my guys and just making good product, you know? And I mean it's one big family thing that we do,' said Raymond Hansbrew, a Staginelli's employee.
Another aspect that makes the pepperoni ball special is that they are made by hand.
Spagel said last year they made 1.2 million pepperoni balls, each one rolled and deep-fried by hand.

'We've chosen to grow slowly and deliberately,' said Tordini. 'We could have sold much more, but we've always favoured a scarcity strategy to protect the brand's long-term value.' Italian restaurants are popular in the U.S. According to IBISWorld, there were 59,754 Italian restaurants in the U.S. in 2023, which is a 3.8 percent increase from 2022. They also note that number of Italian restaurants in the U.S. has been increasing, averaging a 3.8 percent annual growth between 2018 and 2023. But, today, there's one fewer. Moro's Dining, a classic Italian restaurant in Detroit, was a local favorite for 45 years. The spot was famous for its fine Italian food, white tablecloths and waiters dressed to the nines. But, the restaurant has closed. On June 8, those calling the restaurant were greeted with the message, "Hello, you have reached Moro's Dining. We are closed but would like to thank you for all your prayers and well wishes. Chef Thomas Moro is doing fine. Thank you for listening. Goodbye." Yelp has also listed the eatery as permanently closed. While this change happened quickly, it's a few years in the making. Back in 2022, the Detroit Free Press reported that the spot was for sale, with owner Thomas Moro telling the outlet, "I am over 70 years old. It's about time to throw the towel in." According to the restaurant's history included on their website, Moro was the owner and primary chef at the restaurant and began his culinary career at Mario's in Detroit's Midtown in the late-1960s. Beloved Oregon Restaurant Chain, Bugatti's, Closes Its Last Location
Bugatti's Italian restaurant has developed a loyal following over the years. Its founder is one of the wealthiest people in Oregon, a former newspaper magnate. But now its last location has closed its doors after more than two decades in business. "Bugatti's Oregon City officially closed Sunday after 23 years," wrote Oregon Live on June 9. The restaurant chain's closure marked the end of its last location in the state, the site reported, saying it was a "local Italian chain owned by one of Oregon's wealthiest people." The final restaurant was in the Portland area. The restaurant announced it was closing in a Facebook post on June 5. "To our much-loved community of Oregon City: It is with sad hearts we announce Bugatti's is closing. The last day will be 6.8.2025," the chain wrote. "The reasons and struggles are many. We will be focusing on a busy last week and taking care of staff as best we can. We truly appreciate your patronage and support over the many years and consider our tenure a triumph. Thank you, Oregon City!!" On June 8, the restaurant posted on Facebook, "What a glorious send off for Bugatti's. All our guests came out in droves, our wonderful staff worked their tails off, and we were able to say goodbye to each other. What an incredible team. These are a talented bunch and any company would be lucky to have them. Lots of love to all." In 2024, the restaurant chain closed its other location, the original one. Willamette Week described that restaurant as a "stalwart of West Linn's dining scene for more than 30 years," and reported that the chain was owned by "industrialist Robert Pamplin Jr." The news site noted then that Pamplin was "better known for his ownership of Ross Island Sand & Gravel and for Pamplin Communications, which until earlier this year owned the Portland Tribune and 24 other Oregon newspapers." Customers declared their sadness on the restaurant's Facebook page. "Going to miss you so much Bugatti's you've been my family's special go-to restaurant my entire life. Thank you for so many amazing memories," wrote one. "This feels like waking up to family member passed away. Will definitely miss Bugatti's," wrote another person. A man wrote, "We wish all the employees the best moving forward. You were our go to spot for business lunches and you never disappointed. Our company execs really enjoyed coming to your restaurant. We also had some great date nights before heading to the movies.
