Ludhiana: ‘Tractor-seeder' set to reform paddy farming
Developed in 2021, the tractor-operated seeder streamlines all key tasks such as soil preparation, polythene laying, seed sowing, and soil covering in one go. Operable with a 40+ HP tractor, the machine can prepare mats for transplanting in about 150 acres per day, with a fuel usage of just 4.65 litres per hour. It saves 64–68% of costs and 93–94.4% of labour, making it 30 times more efficient than traditional methods.
This smart seeder sows evenly, forms consistent mats of 24–27 mm thickness, and eliminates the drudgery of manual seedbed preparation. The success has been evident on the ground too. In Hoshiarpur, three progressive farmers used the machine under expert guidance during Kharif 2023 and cultivated nurseries over 300 acres. By Kharif 2025, that number rose to 500 acres. One of them, Gurdeep Singh from Kot Fatuhi, was even awarded the CRI Pumps Award for farm mechanisation at the Kisan Mela held in PAU in March 2025.
Encouraged by PAU-KVK's training drives and field demonstrations, many farmers are now purchasing the machine, priced at ₹3.35 lakh, with a 40% government subsidy. With 28 machines already sold across India by Rajarh Agricultural Works, Mullanpur, the innovation is gaining ground.

UP assembly holds AI training session for MLAs
Ahead of the monsoon session of the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly commencing on Monday, a training session on artificial intelligence (AI) was held for the MLAs on Sunday. Experts from IIT-Kanpur conducted the session chaired by assembly speaker Satish Mahana. Over 200 legislators attended the session. We have also started AI enabled cameras which will help in many aspects. For example, one can get to know what all a member has spoken in a period of five years within seconds with the help of AI-enabled cameras,' Mahana said. 'This is not a step of just monitoring, but many other aspects of information are also associated with it,' he added. The session was divided into two parts where first was to introduce AI to the MLAs while in the second part, they were explained about real life application of AI. However, MLAs raised doubts too. 'AI can judge your objective. Hence AI would not be able to do analysis of the data it is taking and the objective with which that data was made. Will AI be able to differentiate between genuine data from the fabricated one? And what about data safety,' asked Sirathu MLA Pallavi Patel. Aradhana Mishra, Congress legislature party leader, said, 'More than introducing AI, the legislators need to be told how to connect dots between their working needs and the AI.' 'Introducing AI is a welcome step but a debate makes it better for the assembly,' said leader of the opposition Mata Prasad Pandey. Kaimganj MLA Surabhi Singh said, 'Can AI cater to the sentiments of our voters? This is significant as an MLA has to connect directly with voters.' 'What if the data available from sources such as the internet is incorrect. Should we first focus on correct data,' asked another member in the house. The experts from IIT-K answered their queries. Special session to discuss UP's 'Vision 2047': Mahana The 24-hours special session to be conducted from August 13 to 14 will have a discussion on UP's 'Vision 2047', said the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly speaker Satish Mahana on Sunday. The session will start at 11 am on August 13. This is the second such session after 2019. The special session will have primary debate that will be taken before the public and then tables in the assembly. 'In three-and-a-half years, sessions have been conducted smoothly and have witnessed increased participation of the members during debate and discussions. The fact is only twice the session had to be adjourned in the past three-and-a-half years. This successful conduct had a positive role of the opposition too,' Mahana added. Asked about the demand from the opposition regarding increasing days of session for debate, he said, 'The days are not less for debate. The monsoon sessions in the past have been conducted similarly.'

Shivraj Chouhan to transfer ₹3,200 cr crop insurance to 3 million farmers
Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will on Monday digitally transfer a crop insurance claim amount of ₹ 3,200 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) to 3 million farmer beneficiaries. The PMFBY claim amount will be transferred during an event organised for this purpose in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. Besides Chouhan, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Union Minister of State for Agriculture Bhagirath Choudhary, and state agriculture minister Kirodi Lal Meena will attend the event. Of the total claim amount, ₹ 1,156 crore will be transferred to farmers in Madhya Pradesh, ₹ 1,121 crore to 700 thousand farmers in Rajasthan, ₹ 150 crore to Chhattisgarh-based farmers, and ₹ 773 crore to farmers in other states, according to an official statement. The Union agriculture minister stated that the Centre has implemented a new simplified claim settlement system in the interest of farmers, wherein claims can be paid proportionately based only on the central subsidy without waiting for the state's premium contribution. "From the Kharif 2025 season onwards, if a state government delays its subsidy contribution, it will be penalised at 12 per cent, and similarly, if insurance companies delay payments, farmers will receive a 12 per cent penalty," he said in the statement. The PMFBY, since its launch in 2016, has disbursed claims worth ₹ 1.83 trillion, while farmers have paid only ₹ 35,864 crore in premium. "This means an average claim payout of more than five times the premium, indicating the government's farmer-friendly policy," he added. In recent years, several technological innovations, such as YES-TECH, WINDS portal, AIDE mobile app, Krishi Rakshak Portal and Helpline number 14447, have been implemented. These have not only improved the claim settlement speed and transparency, but also enhanced weather data accuracy and provided farmers with registration facilities at the village level.

Registration for crop insurance in Virudhunagar district underway
Registration for crop insurance under Kharif season in Virudhunagar district for 2025-26 has begun. In a statement, Virudhunagar Collector N.O. Sukhaputra said that Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme would be implemented through SBI General Insurance in the district. Registration for the crop insurance can be done through banks, Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies and common service centres, the Collector said. The premium for maize is ₹425 per acre, sorgum is ₹182 per acre, green gram and black gram is ₹336 per acre, cotton is ₹386 per acre and groundnut is ₹419 per acre. The premium for horticultural crops like onion is ₹1,573 per acre and banana is ₹4,426 per acre. The Collector appealed to the farmers to avoid last minute rush and register their crops at the earliest. The last date for registration of crops in Virudhunagar district is August 30 for groundnut; September 16 for black gram, green gram, sorgum and cotton and September 30 is for maize. The deadline for crop insurance registration for onion is September 1 and and for banana is September 16. Along with the crop insurance proposals, the farmers need to submit registration form, and sowing certificate issued by village administration officer, copy of the first page of savings bank account passbook and Aadhar card. After payment of the premium at the common services centre, PACS and banks, the farmers should get the receipt for the same. The crop insurance would protect the farmers from the unexpected damages caused to the crops by natural calamities, pest attacks and other factors, the Collector said.
