Volkswagen Golf GTI has been launched in the Indian market at a starting price of Rs 53 lakh (ex-showroom). The performance-oriented hatchback is the second model of the brand in the Indian market to carry the "GTI" suffix in its name, following the Polo GTI, which was earlier discontinued. It is to be noted that the Golf GTI will be sold in the Indian market via the CBU route, with the deliveries scheduled to begin in June. Before the consumers start receiving the car, here are some highlights of the vehicle.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI offered in India features a powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, generating 265 horsepower and 370 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which efficiently delivers power to the front wheels. Additionally, the Golf GTI is equipped with an electronically controlled front-axle differential lock, enhancing its performance and handling.

To justify the title of hot hatch, the car boasts impressive acceleration figures for the Golf GTI, claiming it can go from 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.9 seconds. Furthermore, the vehicle's top speed is electronically limited to 267 kmph, showcasing its sporty capabilities.

Even after being the most expensive model of the brand on sale in India, the Volkswagen Golf GTI is already sold out. Specifically, 150 units of the car allocated for the Indian market have already been booked. If reports are to be trusted, the automaker will bring 100 more units of the car in response to the demand.

Along with performance, the German automaker has focused on the safety of the hatchback with features like seven airbags, rear-view camera & park distance control, and a suite of Level 2 ADAS features. The list includes adaptive cruise control, auto emergency braking, lane assist, travel assist, rear traffic alert, and more.

As for interiors, it includes a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports voice commands driven by Chat GPT. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with a GTI-specific digital display featuring red accents. Other highlights consist of wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, multi-zone climate control, heated and power-adjustable front seats, paddle shifters, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Indian airline IndiGo places order for 30 additional wide-body Airbus A350 aircraft
Indian airline IndiGo said on Sunday it had signed an order for 30 more Airbus A350-900s, bringing its shopping list for the widebody aircraft from the European aircraft manufacturer to 60. "We are placing a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900s," said Pieter Elbers, the CEO of IndiGo, a company founded in 2006 and already behind the largest contract by volume in the history of civil aviation -- 500 Airbus single-aisle aircraft by 2023. "It was last year that IndiGo signed a deal with Airbus for buying 30 Airbus A350 900s with 30 firm and 70 purchase rights, and today we're confirming the intention to confirm 30 out of those 70 also into a firm order. We can't wait for Airbus to deliver the 350s, and we thought this was a wonderful opportunity to actually double our firm orders from 30 to 60 and use the occasion here today, where the whole world is gathering in Delhi itself for that occasion", IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said. 'Nothing off the table': ATR considers setting up manufacturing in India
Turboprop aircraft maker ATR is open to establishing an aircraft manufacturing facility in India if it makes 'business and industrial sense', its head for the Asia Pacific region, Jean-Pierre Clercin, told Business Standard in an interview on Sunday. Currently, ATR has manufacturing facilities in France and Italy. 'Nothing is off the table if it makes sense, from an industrial and business perspective... We are a joint venture between Airbus and Leonardo. Our shareholders are already heavily invested in the country (India) in terms of supply chain. So, we have a lot to learn from that as well,' Jean-Pierre Clercin said when asked whether the company would consider setting up a plane manufacturing facility in India if it receives a large order from an Indian carrier. In March, Airbus announced plans to significantly increase its sourcing of components and services from India, targeting $2 billion annually by 2030. This would mark a substantial rise from the current $1.4 billion, underscoring the growing importance of the Indian aviation market. At present, there are 70 ATR aircraft operating in India. IndiGo operates 47, Alliance Air runs 20, and Fly91 uses three. With seating capacities ranging from 70 to 80 and a range of 1,500 kilometres, ATR aircraft are primarily used for regional travel, connecting smaller cities and towns across the country. IndiGo had ordered 50 ATR aircraft in 2017, all of which have been delivered. When asked whether ATR is in discussions with IndiGo for a fresh order, Clercin said: 'We are involved in discussions with many carriers. It is best to direct this question to IndiGo.' 'I think they are very busy with their international plans. I think that has been a strong focus for them... In the same line, there is a government expectation to see some other champions emerge,' he added. There are currently about 1,400 ATR aircraft operating worldwide. Clercin observed that India has the potential to expand its ATR fleet six to seven times over the next decade. 'India has been at the forefront of a huge transformation from the perspective of innovation. You look at an airline like IndiGo — what they have done is formidable,' he noted. He also said India could become ATR's largest market within the next five years. Currently, Indonesia holds that position, with a fleet of around 100 ATR aircraft.
