Alan Shearer slates Newcastle's 'nightmare' summer amidst Isak's impending departure
After finishing fifth and qualifying for the Champions League, many had The Magpies as dark horses to compete for the title this season if they recruited well. And while adding squad pieces like Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale has improved their depth, the countless rejections and this now impending Alexander Isak departure has casted a dark cloud over their season.
With rumoured failures to sign James Trafford, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbuemo, Benjamin Sesko, Hugo Ekitike and more, it appears that Newcastle mightn't have the pull many thought they would have when they were bought by the Saudi Public Investment Fund in 2021. He has already told the club that he'll never play for them again according to David Ornstein of The Athletic after they rejected a British record fee from Liverpool earlier this month and banning him from training with the first team.
He has now returned to first team training however, but it still remains that Newcastle look like they couldn't have prepared worse for the season if they tried. It's left a lot of fans and pundits disappointed including former Toon legend Alan Shearer. Alexander Isak. Pic:'So far, Newcastle's pre-season has been a nightmare. There is no other way of describing it' Shearer said in his BBC column.
The ex-England captain then goes on to describe that Newcastle seemingly decided not to replace two key members in terms of recruiting players in Sporting Director Darren Eales and Sporting Director Paul Mitchell.
'Newcastle went into the summer with no chief executive or sporting director, which I find amazing. They knew Darren Eales was stepping down as chief executive last September – 11 months ago – and Paul Mitchell left as sporting director at the end of June.' Alan Shearer. 'I don't know why they haven't appointed anyone yet or if that has hindered them in the transfer market, because I am not inside the club, but from the outside it is not a good look. It's a mess, and it begs the question about who has been making the big decisions.'
It's been far from ideal preparation for Newcastle as they are looking towards Brentford's Yoann Wissa and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins as potential Isak replacements. They get their season underway away at Villa this Saturday, with kick off at 12:30pm live on TNT Sports.

Liverpool legend delivers verdict on Caoimhin Kelleher's time at Anfield
Champions League hero Jerzy Dudek has delivered his verdict on Caoimhin Kelleher's time at Liverpool - and he has outlined the role that new arrival Giorgi Mamardashvili will play at Anfield. Dudek played 186 times for the Reds and is best known for his penalty shootout heroics in the 2005 Champions League final. He also won the FA Cup and League Cup in his six years at the Merseyside giants. The former Poland goalkeeper reckons manager Arne Slot has signed a top replacement for Ireland star Kelleher. And he believes the Georgia international will play a key role in Liverpool's season, just as Kelleher did when he played 46 games across his final two seasons at the club, before his move earlier this summer to Brentford. Dudek told the official Liverpool website: 'I think we have two really good goalkeepers. We also had two really good goalkeepers because Kelleher was absolutely amazing when he had the opportunity to play because Alisson couldn't, and this is what you need. 'You know from the past that the competitions are long, there are many, many games to come. You never know what is going to happen and you need two good goalkeepers. 'Alisson is, in my opinion, one of the best goalkeepers in the world and he is the No.1 and then Marmadashvili, he can be a really good replacement. He has got all the capacities to be at the top of the game, which absolutely we need. 'For every position you need to have a good replacement, especially in goal.' The remainder of his appearances came in the FA Cup, League Cup and in Europe. 'So far, from what I have seen, the relationship between the goalkeepers here is very good and I hope it stays like that because there are so many competitions and everyone will get a chance,' Dudek continued. 'It's not like it used to be where one goalkeeper could play 300 games in a row! It is nothing like this anymore so now you will get the chance to play.' He added that Mamardashvili would have one big challenge to overcome at his new club. 'Of course, Mamardashvili needs time to adapt because the Premier League is a little bit different,' said Dudek, who joined Liverpool from Feyenoord. 'The game is quicker. There is much more pressure on the player and he will probably find that out very soon! There is much more pressure on the goalkeeper, especially now when you are trying to build the play with your feet but also with crosses, and this is a huge difference between the Premier League and when you play in the Champions League, for example. 'It is a different style of refereeing and everything that is a foul in Europe is 'play on' in England. As a goalkeeper you have to accept it and be strong in your mind that it doesn't matter what is going to happen, you need to deal with it. 'I found this out at the beginning when I joined Liverpool and realised I had to adapt. I didn't accept it at first but you have to be really strong and you need to respect it because it is the same for everyone.' Liverpool open talks with Palace defender Marc Guehi as champions eye double defender raid
Arne Slot's Reds have been busy since winning last season's Premier League, with Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez among the summer arrivals. Liverpool have also seen a £110million bid rejected in recent weeks for unsettled Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, but defensive reinforcements appear to be the current priority. The Anfield outfit are in discussions with Palace over a deal for England international Guehi. s The 25-year-old captained the Eagles to victory against Liverpool in Sunday's Community Shield at Wembley and is out of contract next summer. Guehi starred in England's run to the Euro 2024 final and will want regular game time ahead of next summer's World Cup. Liverpool are hopeful that the former Chelsea defender wants to join them but sources have denied reports that personal terms have been agreed. Liverpool are also interested in 18-year-old defender Leoni from Parma and are in talks with the Serie A side. The Italy Under-19 international spent time with Padova and Sampdoria before moving to Emilia-Romagna last year.
